One of my closest friends was recently diagnosed with ADD in their early 40s, and they've been spending so much time reflecting, in retrospect, on how hard things were as a result of this during childhood and the teen years - at home but particularly in school. Others always attributed it to a lack of initiative and intelligence on their part - they nearly flunked out of college, though I personally know and have seen how smart they are. I can tell from the way they've been talking about it there's a wonder of how things might have been different during adolescent and early career years if someone had recognized much earlier the underlying cause to these struggles... I'm glad they're getting some help now, and they are, too, but also a sad to watch someone you care about reflect on something that could have been helped so long ago.
