Unfortunately, no one we interviewed knew of Holland. We were also trying to do research on him, but there were very few articles about him. I guess it's difficult to promote yourself without a company to support you. It's not the company factor, there are indie artists that can do well in Korea. I guess you guys know why he don't have articles about him, and why a company don't accept him.

Yeah over here in Australia. The perspective towards the LGBT Community is usually very open. I've talked with a few friends about this before, and they're neutral about this topic. When a person is identified as either Male or Female. It does not restrict them to loving only the opposite gender. They are free to show affection to the same sex. It should not affect anyone at all. We only just recently approved of Gay Marriage with a vote given across Australia. Although this may just be the view from my age being in the teenager audience.

The guy with the black turtle neck and the boy and girl from 1:00 had the best reactions. Unlike that girl who said it’s only ok because they’re handsome but she wouldn’t listen to an LGBT artist. It kinda felt like she was ok with people fetishizing gay men but is actually against real gay relationships. It’s messed up.

But it’s slightly better, she was speaking her opinions not trying to hid behind the “most Koreans” shield that gets held up by many people in these that have negative opinions.

I do agree that your original reaction video was homophobic, but I also think that the way you handled it, and indeed this whole video, was very mature. You took responsibility for the fact that your original reaction wasn't great, but you took the time to think about it and spread news about Holland, for which I'm very grateful - not many people would do that.

@@notwerkinginthishouse8634 hmmm, I see. Well, to be honest , that doesn't make them a good person . Afterall, they definitely must have received backlash for their homophobia, meaning the fans were angry which could've affected their views= less money if not their channel getting taken down. Perhaps if the fans didn't react that way they would never apologize or whatsoever. So I can't really praise them for it , a lot of people would play nice just to get what they want, maybe he still hates gay people but just fears rejection from fans . Either ways, I don't like him not do I hate him, I just hope he truly rethinks his poor actions.

As someone who wants to study humans as a job and I like these kinds of questions I can see the Korean peoples view point. Like they said at the end of the video "we grew up in a homophobic society for 20 years. " it's not like you can say "hey stop being homophobic Korea! " that's not gonna happen. It took years for America to accept Homosexuals and at the same time their is still homophobia in our country. You can see the younger generation of Korea realizing that homosexuality is not bad or wrong but a way of life for them. I've seen many videos of Korean people being asked questions on homosexuality and you can tell some are comfortable and some aren't. There's nothing wrong with that that's just how you were raised and you can't go to the past and change that. I say all this as a bisexual women as well; so I may not believe in their views but I can understand where there point of view is coming from. P.S thank you for your interview/hot topic videos as well as your reaction ones!!

It makes sense. If you are straight, you will feel a preference for straight romance over gay romance. Just like gay people will not be stimulated by straight displays of affection the same way they will for gay romance. It's alright not to be attracted to gays, just like some people don't like certain foods naturally. Obviously those foods are fine, and naturally occurring. Just like gays are naturally occurring, the difficulty is in being a minority that not everyone can relate to.

I also have a pan friend who talks to me about relationship problems and I let her hold my hand when she wants to as well as cuddle her! I don't really care all that much and I am not going to hate anyone because of who they love! I just happen to be a Christian, but god says to love everyone except for Satan! I thought those two guys were very smart, understanding and open minded to it. I wouldn't hate on you guys for feeling uncomfortable with it. Honestly, if I were to watch an MV and two people regardless of sexual identity or whatever were making out, I would be a a little shocked perhaps or like "Oh you don't see that often" (talking about asian MV's, to clarify) Plus, seeing as that kind of concept is indeed not that common in Korea, it is no surprise you guys were startled. Like seeing two guys making out while you yourself is a guy in a very conservative and less tolerant place, it makes you feel a bit weird cause it is very intimate and you are so close to it. You don't go and stare at anyone who is kissing with their significant other, especially that close. Fan service is indeed quite fun sometimes ehehehe woops (otaku alert I am so sorry) That girl was right about the not dating anyone else thing. I'll be making a video about shipping tomorrow or something so I'll go more in depth. But basically If you see your two best mates being all close and sweet to each other all the time, you'd be like "awe you guys are so nice to each other" right? If they sit on each others laps you'd probably be like "what?" but also "Awe lol you don't care what people think, you guys are seriously brothers from different mothers, almost joined at the hip" You feel familiar with that feeling of love. So when you see them get even more intimate it makes you feel the same way you feel when you are watching a romance movie or reading a romance novel. You get so into their bond you start feeling butterflies FOR them. So if idols who like sing about this hot girl and are super good looking and cool and stuff, suddenly start being all cute towards each other, at first you think it is cute and your initial reaction will be pointing out how much they love each other platonically, but when it goes past that and becomes romantic, it incites the same feelings you get when you see any cute couple irl or in a story. But the thing is that they don't always act that way so the rare occasions they do it triggers these emotions and you become an emotional wreck. While at the same time it makes you feel secure cause you don't have to feel jealous cause that guy is into this other girl. Most don't really care about that though, it is purely the excitement from seeing two people being so intimate with each other. Holland is a cute name cause I am from Holland lol. But he is taking a Troye Sivan move here. It is different but someone gotta wake the people up, if one person can do it others can too so I hope it encourages more people to be open minded about it and people to not be afraid to come out. Still a long way to go, but again. SOMEONE GOTTA DO IT.

It's ironic because India has a rich history of portraying same-gender love and gender fluidity in traditional texts (gods and goddesses regularly changing gender, for example). Strict homophobia was brought in by British colonialism. I guess it's just existed long enough for people to assume it's always been there. The same thing has happened to many countries, unfortunately.

As someone who is queer, I'm really glad you made the effort to reflect on yourselves when you received criticism. A lot of people think homophobia is hating gay people, but that's not all there is to it. A homophobic action is any action that reflects an attitude that, when shared in society, hurts us. So, while you two being uncomfortable may not have in itself caused that much harm, because that discomfort due to lack of exposure is so widespread it has created a culture where people are uncomfortable with us for who we are and who we love, and that collective attitude that straight people usually don't notice they are contributing to is one of the root causes of the isolation and violence we face when we are visible. I didn't see the video or the comments under it for myself, but I can guess that you two probably got some aggressive and maybe downright nasty comments. Please understand that this is something we face constantly, day in and day out, from our family, friends, coworkers, legislators, people we pass on the street, and so on. It's exhausting and gutwrenching to deal with and of course we try to either ignore it or stand up for ourselves. But these things weigh us down after so many times, an many of us have faced real trauma resulting from homophobia, so sometimes our gut reaction when someone says something, even accidentally, that hurts us, we lash out full force. We are so used to having to fight tooth and nail just to be heard that we can bombard unsuspecting people at times. Especially when the only times some of us are physically safe is behind a keyboard. I hope that makes sense and gives you a bit of understanding why there was such strong backlash and to not take it personally, but to definitely take this chance to reflect and learn, and I'm happy to see you've already started doing that. There have recently been more interviews with holland and he has been through so much violence and humiliation, and this video and song was basically his way of saying "if you're like me, there's nothing wrong with you, I promise. You can have a happy future too. And dear straight people, I'm gay, this is me being gay, fuck you" and I LOVE IT. Because when we're surrounded by straight people we don't really get to express ourselves fully bc others are uncomfortable with it. But discomfort due to something different isn't a bad thing, it's an opportunity to grow, and holland showed he was done not expressing himself for fear of the reactions of heterosexuals. And that is something so, so important and empowering to queer people living in places and situations where they have always had to censor themselves of hide parts of themselves. I'm so, so proud of him. And I'm glad his video is bringing about conversations and realizations such as yours

I mean... even seeing a hetero couple kiss like this on a bed... passed the 3 seconds of surprise, I'd be a bit embarrassed too -.-' Even if it looks cute, the scene and positions make it seem more intimate and make the viewer feel like they are intruding... Or at least that's how I felt
@EmilyRabjerg

Woah same I feel really uncomfortable or uneasy after it being too much of kissing scene. So I just skip it. I'm queer, and to me it doesn't matter if it's a heterosexual or homosexual kiss scene, just any kind of kiss scene. I feel like third-wheelin and yes like an intruder to their moment. I'm okay with kissing scene being intimate but short. It just too much if it's a long scene.

I really appreciate that you guys did this. Minds and beliefs aren't changed overnight, and the society in which someone's grown up hugely impacts how they see the world (that includes ALL of us). Life is about constantly reexamining the problematic beliefs and working towards becoming a better person. I know five years ago, I would've reacted just as strongly and negatively to this MV (and now I'm openly gay!). I thought of the quote: "The first thought that goes through your mind is what you have been conditioned to think. What you think next defines who you are." I think by choosing next to make this video, you've easily demonstrated your compassion and open-mindedness. From my experience many Koreans, especially young people, have that same attitude too. I wish Holland all the success in the world. Thank you for talking about this issue on your channel!

You pretty much summarized all of what I was thinking, and the same thing happened to me! 5 years ago I was actively homophobic, but I've accepted myself and now I'm out of the closet as a lesbian. You guys reflected on your thoughts and whether it changes your opinions or not. You were open minded enough to listen to other people's, point of view. That alone makes a big difference in a society like yours. Introducing other people to this important issue makes it even better. I feel very proud to call myself a fan of you two. The sad fact that if this were a boy and girl kissing, then it wouldn’t be called “erotic” and hands wouldn’t be covering eyes. As a gay k-pop fan, it’s such a huge deal for me to see Holland’s music video (though I’m not a fan of the song) amidst a heteronormative industry. I have so much admiration for his courage.

Also have you ever watched old korean dramas(10-8 years old). In old romantic! dramas there was one or two kisses (sometimes even none). And of course it was pretty always peck kiss, deep kiss was really really unusual thing. It now slowly changes but still peck kiss is very popular in dramas (especially in youth dramas). Of course in real live you can see more couple kissing each other in public but still not so often. It's just asian thing. In Japan kissing in public is still something inappropiate. Chinese are more open, maybe because of cultural revolution. And of course I'm talking about heterosexual couples.

I have typed this comment 3 or 4 times and I can't seem to get it right in terms of how it comes across, this is my last shot so bear with me and hopefully I can accurately portray my point. There was a news article about a man who called in to a news show to admit that he was racist and ask how he could change that about himself and it made a lot of news and I think we should all strive to be like that guy in our own little way. Now, I don't think you guys are homophobes AT ALL based on what limited footage I have seen of you both. However, I do think that sometimes we have to realize that some of us (myself included) were taught certain prejudices that subconsciously effect us even if our conscious brain doesn't realize or want them. It is the shift of realization that allows for growth. None of us is perfect, but having the emotional intelligence to realize why you are feeling a certain way is a HUGE step to wisdom and kindness and to me it seems like you guys are on that path so I applaud you. I also appreciate that you took the time to ask these questions and I was actually pleasantly surprised for how taboo homosexuality is stated to be in Korea how all of the people you asked seemed to be at least open minded and not hateful like you see out of many conservative Americans. It was hesitant but I got a lot of hope out of it for LGBT people and I was reminded of how much the US has changed in just the last 5, 10 and 15 years. I think this was a meaningful interview and I'm sorry if you received unjustly harsh criticism when you were just trying to make an honest reaction. You seem like good guys with good hearts. None of us is perfect and we are all somewhat a product of our environments.

I actually found these reactions quite on par for what someone would likely get walking down the street in the United States too. Even though South Korea is supposedly "behind" the US in terms of LGBTQ acceptance, I can't proudly say that the US is strides ahead and is a totally awesome and accepting either. There is a difference between showing a raw reaction and saying "woah, wasn't ready for that, that made me uncomfortable." And being homophobic. So many people want to jump on the "your a hater" train if you don't scream "OH MY GAWD I LOVE YOU OPPA" to the new fad. And before you all jump down my throat, NO I'm not calling Holland a fad, I'm saying that he potentially is not getting true fans and views because he is doing something out of the norm, and when you see all the little girl comments like the one stated above, once the dust settles, then we will see who is really there for him, and who isn't. At the end of the day, overseas fans isn't what is going to get Holland paid, it's Korean money and fans, and if he can't pull that, he is going to be in trouble here soon. Back to the homophobic issue. Yes, Korea has a long way to come from people sneaking away to Homo Hill... If you don't know where that is, you not down with the KLGTBQ community. I was at the first Korean pride when the people were throwing themselves on the ground in protest. It has gotten better, and I hope to see more social awareness spread... But this is a BIG milestone for the community. For idols anyway. There are plenty of Korean KZbin influencers that are openly gay... Don't know what rock everyone is living under..... Anyway, I'm gonna stop. This rant has me all over the board 😂😂😂😂 #noh82018

I am glad you guys are opening up and comfortable to the scene of LGBT being exressed. I am Vietnamese and be4 going abroad I never thought I would feel normal abt gay ppl kissing passionately on screen lol. Vietnamese also I think we have some internal homophobia I never thought our country would welcome gays. But gradually there are more gay youtubers in our country being liked and recently a transgender in our country won the biggest global transgender pageant and suddenly ppl who hated her is admiring her and more liking LGBT ppl. I believe my country becomes more accepting now and suddenly am very proud as still a developing country. I also believe giving LGBT more welcome and rights is also progress of modern civilization, cuz I realize they feel so much pain as humans. I heard somewhere wht brings ppl together is not just respect as sometimes we have to force ourselves try to accept, but more abt relatability, if we can relate to whtever they maybe similar to us then we feel very normal. They love whoever they love just like how we love

I guess it is our lack of understanding about "sexuality" itself that makes people embarrassed when the come across it on social media or in person. Therefore, discussion should start from the deap analysis of sexuality and love and then it would naturally move on to LGBT. People generally consider attraction between the opposite sexes as love . We need to go a bit more deep into the topic from a spiritual point of view. Probably then, a few decades later..This special case would hopefully become general . 😊

It’s not offensive to you because you’re straight and having a gay brother doesn’t make you less straight. I’m bi and it is homophobic to say that you’re uncomfortable watching 2 guys kiss, but if it’s a girl and a boy, it’s «normal». And just because someone is honest doesn’t make them less homophobic. This video was great though and I hope Koreans will get more used to normalizing the LGBTQ+ community.

Thank you guys. I think you were very open and Understanding about the difference between actual homophobia, and reactions to homosexual content that was ingrained from an older generation. I'm a 35 year old gay man who lives in Baltimore City (USA) and in the last decade there has been more social acceptance of LGBTQ media here in the United States because it's now more Visible in today’s TV, motion picture, music industry, and digital content platforms like KZbin. Before that even other Gay Men and Women were shocked by LGBTQ content because it was new and taboo. The more videos we do like this gives the public more social awareness and information about the gay community, so we have real gay role models instead of caricatures that were created by stereotypes and stigmas. I think you guys handled this issue very responsibly; and as a gay man I am not offended at your initial shock.... I understand it because it’s a taboo in Korea the way it once was in the USA... and I think now the whole world is trying to just be a little more progressive and I think that’s good for us all. I thought you guys handled the Holland video well. Yeah its probably just internalised homophobia, where you guys are just not used to it within the environment there. I probably will have a similar reaction too, it all depends on the individual. I don't have many complaints about the Holland music video, its just that the song wasn't very good i felt. I feel like they probably could've eased you into the LGBT stuff, especially for Korea, or maybe have it established that the artist is gay, but without having to highlight that much within the video. There's a certain subtlety you have to use in terms of these kinds of videos which highlight issues, and i think Holland's music video jumped into in way too quickly especially for its audience in Korea.

LooYee you have a point but i think the mv was made the way it was bcoz both his artist name Holland n the song Neverland has a lot to do with lgbtq stuff n maybe homophobia in general. So putting a kiss in there seems appropriate bcoz it matches the theme/content.

I had zero problems seeing two guys kissing in a music video or movie since it the same as seeing any other kissing-intimate act onscreen between two people the only difference is that the mass population is used to heterosexual pairings. I regard it as the same concept and yes, I do fangirl more over the homosexual pairings on tv/movies/web series/music videos since there are really a few well written/portrayal of a homosexual pairing.

the first time i saw or heard holland i honestly think that his voice is off but considering that he's entering the idol industry all by himself with no agency whatsoever is really hard...i mean, he just debuted with no one to professionally guide him or teach him some stuff about singing or performance like BTS, EXO or other kpop idols under agencies and yet he's brave, he knows korea and the hardships that comes plus he's positively persistent in pursuing this career which is his dream ever since he was young and that made me support him....i think he'll improve a lot as time passes and i want to see that progress wholeheartedly.

LooYee it was just a kiss. A kiss between people in love. The way you're talking about "subtlety" feels wrong on so many levels because kissing is not coming on too strong. The way you put it, you made kissing sound like nsfw. People aren't stupid, they know about the LGBT community. You can't go in slower than a mere kiss.

I’m often surprised and humbling,ed by how insightful your interviewees are (or is it spin created by the way their words are translated?) anyway, I love these interviews. Thanks. And my best wishes for Holland who has taken on a massive challenge. I hope he will never be alone.

I really respect you guys for urs genuine reactions. It's sad that you have to take the video down, you guys don't deserve those backlash. Please don't ever change the way you react to music vid, because it feel very real and it help everyone understand Korean society better.

This was very interesting to see the viewpoints of native Koreans on such a topic. I'm glad it seems more of the younger generation is becoming more open minded to such stuff. Hopefully one day this won't even be an 'issue' or a 'topic' to discuss. Also, I'm glad you both were able to learn from this process as well, and your apology for your previous video was very mature of you guys. I look forward to more videos from you both.

I was not offended by you feeling uncomfortable watching 2 men kiss... Asians, in general, get uncomfortable when anyone shows public displays of affection, let alone a somewhat taboo one. I get uncomfortable seeing 2 men kiss, or 2 women kiss, or a man and a woman kiss...

I'm really glad and grateful you did this and spoke so honestly about it. Being open to learning and growing is the most important part about becoming better people, imo, and it must be hard to confront your internalised issues in front of a lot of viewers! Most people get to make mistakes and improve themselves in the privacy of their own homes! I love Holland's song and his voice is so interesting, I can't wait to see what he does next. As a queer kpop fan it is so important and meaningful to me, and he is both brave and talented! Love you guys, and thanks for this video!

Wow! Thanks for handling this in such a sensitive and mature manner. Your honesty is so much appreciated. I'm not sure, based on my limited knowledge (Korean friends I know, etc) that Korea is really ready for Holland, but he's here and I hope that, as you said, people can at least start having a dialogue about LGBT. I also hope that people from outside Korea can exercise some understanding as well. Change takes time. :)

You guys aren't at fault for feeling uncomfortable, people just get very easily offended nowadays. I guess vocalising it in a more 'respectful' manner would've been appreciated.

zaria henry it's because it isn't something Korea has been exposed to until quite recently. Of course it would make some people uncomfortable as it isn't very common in Korea

zaria henry jeezs, do you know how it would be like if you were someone living in that cultural environment? Of course it’s freaking uncomfortable, imagine being sheltered in a place where they they didn’t except the LGBT community up until very recently. Of course it’s going to be a slow process, but you can see people are starting to be more open towards it now. You can’t just think the whole Korean population is just gonna except it in a flash, yes it is not right for them to be what you say “homophobic” but at least be patient and respectful

zaria henry boo who hurt you,you are the type of westerners who think they are better than others countries because they are "woke", when there is still a lot of racism and homophobia in the west too, fixe your problems first before putting your nose on other people businesses, as a conservative society Korea is slowly changing in all regards and you have to acknowledge that and take into account the cultural differences

I don’t really see anything harmful if minors would see such mv’s. Even if they would start kissing the same gender - so what? It doesn’t mean that the whole worlds turns gay because of that (not that being gay is a problem, just saying :). People find their own preferences regardless of lgbt content in the media or not.
