Forget that pejorative 'sleeping giant' descriptive, that's like calling us the 'forever mañana' people, and furthermore, like this one, too many descriptives of the Spanish speaking are English language settler-colonialist supported negatives. With that point of view you simply deny, defy and obliterate the very serious social activism and organizing among all of the American continents repressed minorities as though there's never been such a thing. id laugh if Venezuela gets the best economy in South America in spite of sanctions, just like Russia.. I wonder if Venezuela would let back all those Venezuelans who jumped ship? I talked to various Venezuelans who went to other countries... like a taxi driver in Peru. He was claiming he left Venezuela cos its too poor, he had no money etc. I said.. wait, how come you own a taxi in Peru then? He had no answer. In my opinion it was often the richer people leaving Venezuela not the poor people.

Whenever inviting a guest, I would like Mr. Becker to always ask him/her how to respond to opponents of socialism who claim that socialism will run the economy to the ground because it makes people lazy by not offering enough incentives for people to work and improve the condition for themselves & their families. The stereotype is that everyone would just sit at home and wait for welfare checks to come in the mail or slack off at work because work results are not correlated with income. Mr. Becker would do his listeners a great deal of favor by asking this question.

What cynicism: the same people who lobbied in the collective West for sanctions to destroy the country's economy, generate suffering, incite a social outburst, overthrow the legitimate government to set up a puppet government, now present themselves as the country's saviors. Unfortunately, there is a large group of Venezuelans who do not understand what has really happened in the country and they blame the Maduro government as the only one responsible for the terrible crisis that the country suffered and assume a stubborn denial of the 932 sanctions and their devastating consequences, which caused the death of 100,000 people, according to the reports of the United Nations rapporteurship. They are as genocidal, those who called for sanctions as the leaders of the collective West who imposed them. They should be prosecuted and not be candidates.

I don’t think Maduro is well read and smart, when Chavez was president he made the call to use the oil resources to build a socialist project but failed to diversify the country’s income to sustain a better socialist project. Maduro was just the next guy and he is just not the same, Venezuela is in a crisis, yes sanctions are terrible and awful to build a project for the future, but I don’t think there’s merit to blame it all on sanctions.

This is the problem exactly. Maduro and his authoritarian government is the issue. When you have to rewrite your constitution to ensure that you remain in power, there's a problem. They should have spoken to the Venezuelan public. Albeit many in the public attribute the problem to socialism, instead of mismanagement of the government. Socialism works, when done properly, but you need to be competent and have an economy backed by several sources to ensure stability.

Venezuelan leadership is inept. It has the largest oil reserves in the world yet is a basket case. China (the worlds largest oil importer) tried to work with Venezuela on improving oil production but has realized Venezuela is useless in raising oil production. Millions of Venezuelans have left and gone to other countries including the USA.
