Really glad to hear you mention beet pulp pellets. With the prices of grain going up so fast, I have been trying to cheapen the remainder of the winter feeding. Started adding beet pulp pellets to my ration. Couldn't find any information on feeding them to goats. I don't add too much. Thank you for this video. I am going to ask the extension service about the mix I am providing. Thank you for the time you put into your work for us.

I feed my goats beet pulp too! Keep in mind all the beet pulp grown in North America is genetically modified, but it is possible to get some that's imported and nonGMO

I wanted to buy beet pulp for my goats but the store clerk said that it's mostly for horses and not good for goats. Currently I feed 3 times a day sweet feed and scratch grains to my goats plus hay and tree branches which they nibble on during the day while browsing. But I think that too much grain in their diet probably could cause problems, but they just love it.

There is no concrete answer, every region, goat, goat owner has different needs. Balance is the important thing. Thanks for a very informative video! I wish I could have goats again but my body isn't up to it. Chickens, on the other hand, are easy on my body and add a fun and goofy element to life that I need. I'd say at least a month. They are pretty driven to breed when there's a doe in heat.

We have been feeding a commodity mix to our goats and it does have "goats" on the label. We had a buck die of urinary calculi. Not all feeds are balanced for goats even if they are labeled. We started adding amonium chloride to the mix.

I’m so sorry you’ve lost one 😢 Yes, for others reading what happened to you…it’s the ratio of calcium to phosphorus that needs to be balanced. So check labels, even if they are “goat grain”! And there are so many factors that play into all of this as well: water, hay, pasture (total diet makeup)

@@SageandStoneHomestead That definitely could have contributed some. Do you have issues with copper deficiency? Parasite problems, rough coat, fishtail and reddish places on black goats and blonde/orange on brown goats can be a sign of copper deficiency. We have to copper bolus more often than a lot of people do because of the calcium. It took mea long time to figure that out!

I am planning to grow Mangels for my chickens and goats (giant beets related to sugar beet). Partially to cut down on the feed bill but mostly to be as self sufficient as possible. This will be my first year growing them so we'll see how it goes 🤞

I've been thinking about this exact subject so much lately. What will happen if supply chain issues happen more or stop? I don't know. But I can say, we are experiencing a lot of issues right now getting hay. Up here the people with hay are selling it for 2 or 3 or 4 times what it's worth and to travel somewhere doesn't make sense because of the price of fuel. So we feel like we are at an impasse. It's tough and I can't imagine what it will be like if it gets worse. But I can imagine that there will be a lot less animals people can support, especially up north, if there is no feed for the winter months. We try to put up our own hay but that is affected by the weather too and a drought year especially hurts. I think it's finding things like Rewired for Joy mentioned. Finding things in your area that you can grow that will support you and your animals more and more and reproduce through seed saying too.
