What actually cured my depression in that video was when dave said "it's really difficult to understand the scale of how nice that is. The way I see it, comments like that are actually kind of demeaning. Like the implication is that all of my problems are solved by some vague indirect comment someone makes out of self indulgence. I see it more as a way for people to put in the most menial effort and claim they're making the world a better place and they can feel good about it. It's like emotional masturbation. Anyone who's genuinely helped by it clearly doesn't have that big of issues or has an unhealthy need to belong so much that they're willing to take a comment not directed at them as if it were, and anyone who thinks it does is really just stroking their own ego. I get its a pessimistic view but I find it insulting to imply that an indirect half assed positive remark is somehow supposed to make anything better. If you guys need another positive story I have one I was in a severe depression for almost two years before it started to clear up. It was so severe that I had to stay in a crisis unit for a week. I love to sing but during that period I didn't find any more joy in singing. But one day I was washing dishes and I had a song stuck in my head. I was singing it quietly when I heard my mom come into the room crying. She gave me a huge hug and said: "you haven't sung in so long, I forgot what your voice sounded like." I will always remember that.
