The good news is you are profitable in the first four months of going fulltime. That is HUGE. Most businesses loose money in the first year. At the end of the year you can make another video to show how much your business has grown and looking back you won't believe how much better it got. Work on your shop hours. You should be billing at least $150 per hour with your knowledge and experience. You should be able to get 25 hours a week on average which is $180,000 per year gross. And that is just the start. As you get better and faster and more famous, increase your rate. It will all happen for you, you're doing the right things. Honest, Transparent, thoughtful work; these are the ingredients of a great service business. And it only gets better from here!

My advice, do not sell components, its massive pain in the rear dealing with potential issues, logistics, storage, RMA, customers and their complaints. That is unless you decide to design something yourself, but then again, service is where the satisfaction and money is. I have designed fairly high voltage high power ESC but when i looked on how many hoops i have to get thru to actually start selling it i decided to keep it open source. Maybe I will get back to this one day but so far, no...

Cool to hear behind the scenes. I like how you're approaching it practically and not ruining your family at the expense of your passion. I think that's what I like best about you. I'm watching electric car builds builds but I'm also watching a responsible dad who's figuring out how to balance commitment (love for family) with personal desires. Also, I think it's great you look at what the best way to optimize your time, as a innovation professional I recommend more of that 😁 I love the creativity and problem solving. It would be interesting to see more cars and unique challenges. I'm sure success with these builds will lead to more clients. Good luck in whatever you decide.

I really appreciate the incredibly transparent insights. I'm glad it's going "good enough", even if not amazing (yet). Considering you've been doing this just a couple of months, I think this is still a great result. From a viewers perspective, it seems a bit ... chaotic? Sorry I don't have a better word for it (and I don't really mean "chaotic"). Maybe even slightly confusing, which project is up in any particular week, and to keep track of the projects (keeping in mind we often watch dozens of youtube channels). To be clear, that's perfectly fine of course! I am still glad we are being taken along for all the builds. It's also clear that youtube can't be the focus financially, since it just doesn't carry that kind of weight on the financial side.
@ElectricSuperCar
@ElectricSuperCar 5 күн бұрын
Would you suggest to work on (or post) only one project at a time?
@TheCreat
@TheCreat 5 күн бұрын
@@ElectricSuperCar no I don't think that would be better, or practical. It's also just not "your reality", so desyncing videos from what you actually do is at best more work for you and at worst unsustainable. But maybe including a tiny overview at the start (no more than 30s) what the current state of the project is and what was done so far. Like the "previously..." in TV Shows. I know you do already mention some things, so just add a few photos or clips from the build to remind us visually. But I do mean a few seconds. Could also be good for people who click on a video from you for the first time.

Take Watson and show it off at ALL local car shows within its driving range man. Make sure you have some merch readily available with you(popular sellers&sizes) use sticker hashtags on it and some type of flyers or business cards to then hand out to curious sorts. Maybe try local shops doing elktromod conversions, they could have work overflow they might send your way for a small slice of the action so to speak? Or they could have parts and pieces of builds they'd like to just farm out to you? And you could get someone whose on a waiting list that doesn't want to wait another year or more to see the project start. Could you also partner with a local school or tech shop to build a conversion in your shop? Where they pay for the build mostly and you can get the exposure and views from it? I still think if you went back and cleaned up/enhanced the whole Watson build series? It could make you a lot more $$$ And displaying it in more places bring in some decent offers, so getting it sold could then fund the current money maker Porsche gt-e build. Maybe try to get some help from other successful social media influencers to. For a reasonable price maybe they'll be able to offer applicable advice to boost your channels income streams, subs and merch sales? Could you sell any of your current body parts or build plans, 3d scans etc to folks wanting to do their own elktromod conversions? 🤔

I hate to say it with the merch is that it lacks personal connection. The best selling merch is the ones that have a personal connection. An example of this is I watch "Junkyard Diggs" and when they come to an impasse, they jokingly say "Have a beer about it". Then they put it on a tshirt and sold the hell out of it. If you bend you morals, you could make an entire line of t-shirts trolling the ICE world and would probably do pretty well but I don't particularly like people that troll EVs so maybe don't...my 2 cents.

I honestly think what's better than doing conversions on commission, is finding popular cars for conversion builds, and making parts which facilitate that. Like how ev west r&ds and then sells tray motor mounts for old VWs

There is also a business opportunity in the specifying and designing area which you mentioned. Your big DIY following globally might respond to a service specifying a conversion. Identifying components, build brackets, etc. Plus designing and manufacturing the loom. The wiring loom seems to be a big hurdle. I have seen machines that "knit" a loom together and includes all plugs and connections. This would get DIYers going really quickly having the loom, your plans and consulting. Good video and all the best with your business.

Great video! One thing that you should consider is building kits. For any car you convert post a kit, sell parts and offer to make the conversion. Even if it won’t create a lot of income initially, it will allow you to offer more affordable conversions (since you have plans), make some profit on kits, and long term grow as you’ll get return purchases for kits and actual hands on conversions - which you’ll be able to hire help and build a growing business.

I will say, as a viewer, I could tell a difference between when you're having fun and when you were trying to do this for a business. When you were working on the first build for yourself and the H1, your videos were fun to watch. You showed things like setting up the battery boxes and explained wiring. Now that you need this for income, your videos don't have the same feel and I tend to skip over them now. I really want to like your channel. Maybe you could collaborate with Jerry Rig to help you find a way to click better with the audience. Please find a passionin this somewhere and look past doing this for a business. I'm not being critical, this is honest feedback because I like your channel.

Provide a component solutions service. You have the experience and the knowledge of components available, which for me is the most daunting part of planning an EV conversion. Have people describe what they're looking for, the range, the power, end goals. Then you compile a list of suggested components to achieve it. Give 2-3 solutions. A budget option, a middle of the road option, and a balls to the wall option. Frankly I'd probably do that right now.

Glad things are staying above water! Have you considered doing smaller vehicles? Like maybe ATVs, SXS, even motorcycles? I have always wanted to develop and build a reverse trike EV. What if you could convert say a KLR 650 to electric with decent range for less than the price of a Zero FX or other E-Motorcycle? A tadpole EV as a commuter car would be awesome! Single person, small, license as a motorcycle, etc, etc. Nonetheless, great work on these builds and the channel!

Develop a solution, canbus gateway or something that can allow for hybrids. Most solutions are fully ev conversions. Having a way to read can data, and then translate it to run a tesla motor in addition to a convetional ice setup would be great. It’s part of why I went cayman myself, so I could potentially make it hybrid awd

I've been thinking one other way to make money on EV conversions is heavy equipment i.e. skid steers, mini skid steers, mini excavators... of course that necessitates a truck and trailer to move them but when you can find heavy equipment in need of an engine... it may be profitable to convert it to electric and there may be a market for it. Electric sports cars are a luxury but an electric skid steer might be a wise investment (for someone who has the money to buy any type of heavy equipment). The Hyper9 has optional firmware and clone files intended to drive hydraulic pumps.

I just went to some sand dunes and now I really want a 2 or 4 seater electric side by side to go ride around on. I think it would be so cool to create a solar trailer to hold it in that could charge it reasonably well over time and then go out and play. Maybe I could find an older one to do a conversion on…

The average time for a new business to mature and turn a profit is two years. You are on a normal trajectory for a new business, keep going, and look to implement unique, popular concepts and ideas to increase your scope. It's okay to borrow ideas from other channels, it is possible to get a million views when it comes to using Tesla chassis to make Tesla-based hot rod type cars similar to your first build. Find your audience and cater to them.

im looking to convert a car and hopefully will look to you for some advise. i also have a cnc shop with 2 mills and a lathe if i can help you out let me know. my IG is the same profile name without the numbers. im am probably going to use you link to pick up one of those scanners you got, looked like it worked well enough for me. i also have 30 years of CAD experience. im no expert but it seems putting your builds or projects to use, sometimes pushing them to the limits, attracts more attention on youtube.

The Jerry Rig collaboration brought me over- more because of the troubleshooting and payoff rather than the "build" aspect. I suggest more troubleshooting with a payoff at the end, this is the formula for all the discovery channel content out there and a LOT of the growing successful channels like Legit Street Cars. Also more collab with more channels will grow you faster than anything else. Hoovies Garage, Wizard, LegitStreetCars, Rich Rebuilds, WatchJRGo all are on my constant watch list.

Great episode. As a long-time fan, I wish you nothing but the best. Having better merch will definitely help the online store. I remember looking at stuff to buy something, but I wouldn't say I liked anything at the time. I would definitely buy some of the things you just showed up, so go for it. You should find someone who would like a clone of your Porche; that way, while you work on your customer, you would be working on your own, and then you can sell later for an excellent profit. You should look for someone who wants a clone of the Caiman. Best of luck, and good vibes from Costa Rica.

If I can make one suggestion... Find someone that can help you get this channel to get more views. You seem to be going down the path of customer electrification which I think is great, but this KZbin channel is something that can make you money whether you're working on someone else's car, your own, or even just making a talking head video like this one. KZbin is a game, it's not one I have ever worked in, though I have wanted to, but it's one I have actively been apart of and watched insistently for 12-14 years. Right now, the game is thumbnails and titles. The content of your video is important but it's almost secondary. You can have a fantastic video but if your thumbnail doesn't drive traffic it won't matter. Take a look around some of the biggest channels in your own space and try to pay attention to what they do, also pay attention to what they do when they first release a video. That first 24-48 hours is crucial. They all have a very unique feel to their thumbnails. I know who's video I am clicking on and generally what it might be about before I have seen their channel name, profile picture, or title. That's something your videos need, if you look back at your last 1-2 months of videos, they all have kind of a different feel on the thumbnail. Use the same colors, same fonts/size, same general size of your face/body in the thumbnail etc. I would also, if you're not already push shorts. Get on TikTok, get on KZbin shorts. I don't know what the conversion is from a viewer there to a long form and it's something that I think every creator is trying to get their hands around right now but it's a way to get a massive amount of reach, and a massive amount of impressions rather than trying to snag stragglers off one by one to watch an indepth build on a long form video like this. I love what you're doing, it's something I want to be doing myself but haven't built the courage to do so. I am a mechanical engineer here in Utah. If you want some help with designing or building hit me up. But keep going. You said something that I think is really important in this video, you're making 1/3 the money but you're 3x as happy. Keep pushing on this, keep diversifying and spend all of your time trying to make this work because it will happen. If you pour your passion into this it will work. Keep it up!

Looks like you are specialising in classic car conversions. Consider partnering with some of the UK and US electric conversion shops that have designs for classic car conversions - Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghini etc … also you should be partnering up with squaresafe that are actively seeking channels to promote their site services. Good luck anyway, and I look forward to your content.

it's definitely a niche area and always has been. There are a few specialty companies who perform EV conversions, but for me, it's more about having the ability to perform inexpensive EV conversions that enhance the functionality of a vehicle, but not something that would cost me so much money that basically I could go out and buy a fully functioning, sophisticated, up to date EV vs converting. For example, I am one of the few people who like the look of PT cruiser convertibles. However, from what I've read, their engines and drivetrains are not the greatest. I would love to have an EV variant to use as a daily cruiser around town and to enjoy the convertible aspect of it. However, I would not want to spend more than $10-15k on a conversion and do not want a conversion which basically leaves you with a vehicle that can go maybe 50 miles on a charge, and have 0-60 in 8-10 seconds. What would be the point? But would I hire someone to build that for me? Sure, but not if it cost me $100k to get a fast, fun, variant with at least 150mi of range. Would make no economic sense. Hope you find your client base and niche. Looks like you are angling towards customers who are willing to spend 6 figures and I hope that works for you. Originally I watched your video's to give me some limited understanding of what it takes to understand the various elements that go into converting from ICE to EV. Once I realized it was above my ability to understand or care about so that aspect of your channel has waned for me. Thanks for the insight in this video about the financials. I find that interesting.

Could you do a video breaking down the cost of converting a car with you? Doesn’t have to be exact but would be great to know. Have you thought about being partnering with an ev conversion kit manufacturer (like electric classic car in the uk) to be a ‘certified installer’?
