I use a Gossamer Gear Vagabond Jet as my "work bag". I like it so much I got a set of them for some members of my team. Good work features like a laptop sleeve and organizer pockets but also "backcountry features" like a good front stretch mesh pocket, side water bottle pockets and shoulder strap pockets. Its also pretty light weight. I've seen a ton of daypacks which weigh more than a lot of overnight backpacking packs. Even though you arent carrying them for miles at a time, it still doesnt make sense to have a daypack made out of super heavy cordura nylon. Unless you are going for tactical urban warrior vibe, in which case, you do you :)

I love my Osprey Daylite Plus (20L). I use the bladder pocket for my laptop from work. I do groceries with it, run little errands, do commutes. And use it for allot of my day hikes as well! Its a bit on the heavy side. But because its a day pack the load never is to heavy itself.

I waited until I had several days looking at the packs that my fellow commuters carry on their daily trips via train to downtown Seattle. As you can guess there were numerous packs for big box stores like Costco and others on display. None of which I would consider for a daily hike, but they certainly would work for carrying a laptop and lunch into work. So, I focused on those that have some of your criteria - side water bottle sleeves, padded shoulder straps and perhaps a hip belt. I started to notice quite an assortment of REI Flash 22 packs as they fit the field description, but not perhaps one that a laptop would fit into. Then I noticed many of the Thule 18 or 22 packs. Sleek and compact with padded straps and a simple web hip belt hanging down from them. Thule does offer the Aion Travel Pack which does have the laptop sleeve. But must say that my eyes always turn to the Osprey's in the crowd since about 7 years ago I traded up to a Tropos pack for my daily use and never looked back. It has a laptop pouch that will hold my 17 inch laptop, has side water bottles, a front pocket for ready to grab gear, two main zipper compartments that could easily carry the 10 essentials and even has a side compression straps and a "kickstand" feature that allows it to stand upright when you set it down - something I wish more packs had. It also has a floating mesh pad the sits against your back and load lifters. I have carried 20 laptops, two docking stations, two power banks, and my regular gear without trouble - so I would feel very confident taking it out on a day hike. Osprey also offers the Metron 22 Roll-Top Pack that hits a lot of the same buttons as a commuter and day pack. Just food for thought of my observations and experience with the Tropos that looks as good and is as comfortable as it was 7 years ago.

First 2 packs are definitely beard growing, lumberjack millennial worthy. But would legit carry the big agnes pack and it looks like the only one built for the outdoors. I carry the mystery ranch 3 way briefcase. It has the built in backpack straps and expands for daypack use, has iPad and laptop slots that are padded. But really still digging the big Agnes as it still remains an outdoor day pack. I dig that it’s lightweight and still can dump the edc stuff and squeeze stuff in it for an overnight. Great video

Three weeks ago I bought a Deuter Speed Lite 25 pack. It’s a great little bugger. I don’t use it for office or school stuff, I use it for hiking. I was surprised at how much I could bring with me. A Tarptent Notch 1P tent, a summer quilt, a Nemo 25 inch sleeping pad, two 2 one liter water bottles, a food bag with 4 days of food, two trekking poles in a side pocket, full rain gear and ditty stuff. Gear, water, food and the whole kit…16 pounds!😊 They call it a fast pack and it’s justified. I tried it running and it was quite impressive. But it could be more itself at 10 pounds.

I use the Gossamer Gear Vagabond Trail everyday. Too bad it's not made anymore. I love it. I use it for work, fishing, and took it backpacking with a lightweight loadout. I love that it has double handles to use it like a grocery bag. The mesh shoulder pockets made me want it for all my packs now. It just feels like a small 23L backpacking backpack.

Hi there and thank you for the video, I have 3 backpacks that work very well as a commute and hiking pack, 1 is the fjallraven high coast 24 backpack, 2 is the topo designs mountain pack 16L, and 3 a new backpack by backcountry (destination 30L pack).

Cool test. Well Black Dia,omd is the simpliest of al of them, but for me that is huge advantage. I hate the idea having the main compartment jsut zipped up. I dont like that at all. Also...the design of Street Creek is 3 levels above the second one and 10 level above the last one.

I was thinking about getting a backpack with the hip belt or not, and I think I’m gonna go with the one that doesn’t have the belt. I don’t hike a whole lot anyways and when I do I usually go for a couple of hours max. I love spending time outdoors but I’m no means a professional hiker. So yeah :) thanks for the video!

It's absolute overkill but any alpine oriented bag with a pocket specific for shovel & probe makes for a great "do it all". I've got a Haglof's Elation 30L that I use for long days hiking, i'll use it when skiing later this year, it's a fantastic camera bag too with the right insert. But mostly it just carries my laptop and notepads to the coffee shop lol.

So funny that's exactly what I was looking into this weekend, as my work bag just died! Ive seen the North Face Borealis Classic in a shop, i found ot really appealing, 28L which is large enough for a day hike, with bouldering stuff, and hydration pack.. or just traveling through airport security with enough stuff with me. Maybe just a bit heavy for a 28L pack, but for a 1-day / travel could be good enough. The only downside is the hip belt that's way too thin, but can pack in a little pouch for city use. Have anyone tried it ?
@philipreasons3298
@philipreasons3298 Жыл бұрын
I bought a LL bean Continental, after a year plus I am not thrilled. Biggest downside are the side pockets that are an odd size, they only fit narrow bottles, but they are not deep enough to buckle in a 1 L smart bottle. Again, construction is awesome , design is glorified schoolbag.

Any thoughts, on the Go Ruck GR1 they come in 21L and 26L w/ dedicated bomb proof laptop sleeve and overall durability. With that said water bottle carry is a bit difficult but doable. And the GR 2 comes in 34L and 40L great for travel, Love to hear your thoughts.

Good suggestion. I didn't speak to that obviously here since I wasn't trying to focus solely on air travel. But any of these three would function just fine as a carry on size bag.

@@BackcountryExposure good to know. I have been looking at the BA 20 and 30 L for traveling and I’m not quite sure of the 30L would pass the carry on dimensions or not.
