I just found your channel and I am in the process of watching ALL your videos! I noticed you chose warm water to wash your cleaning cloths. Our water heater is very hot...about 140 degrees. I would love to see you do a video on the difference between washing in very hot water with tide pods or powder, and washing on the washer warm setting. You're doing a great service to us all! Thank you. ❤

I agree! I would love to see the diff. in products (and even without any products as the control) used with hot, warm & cold temps as I really feel the hot would kill off more bacteria (tho economics wise it would be cheaper to do it in cold as many laundry soap companies suggest) it is just not good enough to kill lurking bacteria in cold. I read once that you should soak a kitchen sponge in boiling water for a few min. to kill off bacteria so am thinking the hotter the better with laundry.

I just watched your video again. I thought you had used one scoop but you used TWO SCOOPS to sanitize. That's roughly four loads in a container to sanitize four loads of laundry. It's not locally available, I need to drive 1/2 hour to the next town over to find this at Lowe's. I guess this won't work for me for the cost involved. I am very thankful and appreciative of your videos. I like how you do things and I love your voice. Thank you for doing these videos.

This is very interesting I know we are making tons of requests lol, but following this microwave topic, could you test if microwave can disinfect dry fabric, in theory bacteria has water and microwaving dry fabric/cloths/clothes would burn em all, even the difficult ones interspersed in to the fibers

@@LukkeFS I love the requests! I am updating my notebook now! Interesting thought about dry fabric … will add it to the list!
@apAvocado
@apAvocado 2 ай бұрын
@@LukkeFS you need food in the microwave that contains water molecules for it to heat and or cook the food. Dry fabric does not contain water molecules in it, thus it will burn and cause a fire in the microwave. If you microwave a dry paper towel it will catch fire in the microwave. You can air dry your clothes outside under the sunshine and the uv rays will disinfect/sanitize your clothing. It needs a minimum of 30 minutes of direct sunlight exposure to sanitize/disinfect the clothes. Best idea is to just leave out in the sun until fully dry.

So I've been using this and wow it's like really expensive using 2 full scoops! Thought I'd also mention that it's not good to use on jeans because of the metal in several places on jeans, or any clothes that have metal like zippers; the oxi degrades the metal. The only other thing I've used to santize/disinfect laundry is Lysol laundry sanitizor but for me, the smell of it really lingers and just smells unhealthy to breath and I don't want it still in our clothes touching our skin so I find I have do do a few extra rinsing or wash again after. I see you like Odoban for this, but in Odoban FAQ they say they don't disinfect only deodorize, and say nothing about if it sanitizes or not. Would be interested to see a test of Force of Nature in the laundry, like the max amount your fabric softener dispensor will take.
@FieldOfFocus

I have not used it exclusively (since I test a lot of products) so I appreciate you commenting on the long term use of it. Hi, I recently came across your channel and I really enjoy it, but I have a few suggestions to make your content more accessible and reach a larger audience: 1. Cut shorter the montage of collecting the samples. Keep only the important parts and narrate what you're doing in the video and why you're doing it the way that you do. 2. Make YT shorts 3. Make bigger comparisons: instead of 1 product at a time, pick 3 or 4 products and compare them. Maybe something like DIY cleaner vs home cleaners.

What a fascinating video! I looked up Oxiclean Laundry & Home Sanitizer ( we have different brands in my country) and realised it's not just regular oxygen bleach but has an activator (TAED) in it that really enhances the effectiveness of the oxygen bleach (as we saw!). Like many people, I like to PRE-SOAK my extra dirty/gross microfibre cloths in a bucket of warm water with either vinegar (1 part vinegar 3 parts water) or oxygen bleach (as per pre-soak instructions) for a few hours before chucking them in the washing machine. I would love to see a comparison of which pre-soak method is more effective. In other words: Vinegar vs AOB (activated oxygen bleach) vs regular oxygen bleach ------ And FYI for microfiber cloth users, don't use water that's too hot. No more than 140F/60C or you can damage the cloths (essentially melting the fibres like plastic). Warm or not-too-hot is good because it opens the tiny fibres up so they can let go of what they're holding on to, but not to the point where you damage them. This goes for using a dryer for them too - low heat or no heat only. Oh, and never use fabric softener or bleach!

Thank you for all of your testing - it's very informative and useful! I have often wondered if these products really work. Like you, I think I would limit the use of this and other sanitizing/disinfecting products except in certain circumstances such as immunity issues or for mold and mildew, etc because of costs, and to limit the impact on the environment. Most people have decent immune systems and should be able to handle average amounts of microorganisms and bacteria in their world, and overuse of these products create their own issues. I did use the Lysol Laundry when they first came out with it during Covid as I am a critical care nurse and took care of many Covid patients, so would immediately wash my uniform after getting home to help protect my family. Thank-you again.

I am a nurse as well, and I can think of many instances where you do want to use this (former OR nurse). I absolutely LOVE the info on this channel! Back in the day we used to use bleach all the time to accomplish this same purpose for washing (we have used laundry disinfectants since forever), this is just a color safe way to do the same thing bleach can do. Of course you don't need to add it to every single load! With dirty rags, when folks in the house are sick, after coming back home from doing dirty work (like washing hospital scrubs), it IS super helpful because the washing machine does not kill a surprising number of germs. Then these germs or viruses (say fecal bacteria from diarrhea undies or a toilet cleaning rag), survives, sits in the washer, then gets on the next wash and contaminates that. It isn't like most of the products we use are environmentally friendly anyways to do wash or just about everything. If you aren't going to use these disinfectants you really need super industrial strength heat and dry washers and dryers to actually kill off germs. Just running our hot water from a home water heater and using at home dryer temp wise isn't really going to get the job totally done when I researched this before. My guess is folks aren't using this for every single load, just filthy towels/rags, a dirty, mildewy shower curtain, stuff like that! I really find that in general, the public usually errs on the side of being too filthy and discounting how sick germs can make them versus being over zealous about using products and being too clean.

7:28 I believe the Oxi Clean likely killed all the bacteria, but the few, small colonies may have come from a re-introduction to germs when you picked the cloths up. I would recommend wearing sanitized medical gloves to prevent that from happening. However, it's not that big of a deal considering the results still showed the effectiveness of Oxi Clean, which was what you (we) were looking for. I was surprised with the results. I always believed the Oxi type products were just hype.

You make such great videos and I appreciate your attention to detail when it comes to directions. If I may make a recommendation, please consider testing out Tide with Bleach laundry detergent powder or Tide Ultra Oxi powder. Neither product contains bleach like Clorox bleach, it’s just sodium carbonate peroxide and an activator (TAED), so it’s safe for colors. These are both the active ingredients of Oxiclean Laundry Sanitizer. Tide doesn’t claim it sanitizes or disinfects, but I think it’s worth a test because of them sharing the same active ingredients.

You can also just buy pure Sodium Percarbonate and add just a tablespoon or so per wash for similar effect. It's also not cheap, but it can be used as a general unscented cleaner indoors and out and as concentrated as it is, it lasts a long time. Works great added to toilet tanks and cleaning mold and mildew on surfaces. For sanitizing laundry, use the pre-soak cycle with warm or hot water (cold won't activate the percarbonate properly).

Love, your new fan.
@FieldOfFocus
@FieldOfFocus Жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you for your kind words! I see that part about preventing mold for the hard non-porous surfaces and fabrics, it seems like it uses a strong concentration of oxiclean and there is no rinsing. So my guess is that it is like Microban, where it stays on a surface once dry and that prevents the mold growth. When we use it in the laundry we are rinsing it so I don't think it would have that same impact on laundered fabrics. You could soaking the blanket, letting it fully dry, then after fully dry launder again? Or even dry outside in the sun? I know a lot of people will soak in vinegar also for mold/mildew issues. If you think the mold is spreading to other clothes I would perform whatever wash cycle cleans your washing machine, mine is called "basket clean". Good luck!

For this I just added it to the laundry, so there was no mixing and waiting. I am unsure of how many hours it loses it's effectiveness, that might be interesting to test. Where did you find that info? Interesting thoughts, thanks for watching!

New subscriber here! Is there any way you can test out your hands? Like after washing with plain hand soap and warm water for 20 seconds, and then the next day or a different day do it after using a pump of hand sanitizer gel. You would need an assistant, and sterile or very very clean towels to dry your hands. You could sample palm vs back of hand vs nail bed vs under finger nails for example.

Hello and welcome!!! I haven't tested my hands, I have been focused on products that make claims about surface cleaning but will put it on my viewer suggestion list! I wouldn't use sterile towels to dry because I test products in a real world setting and people don't have sterile towels laying around. Interesting suggestion! Thanks for watching and commenting!!

Could you make a video using cold water with it. I know it says hot to disinfect and warm to sanitize but I don’t like washing my tee shirts in warm or hot water. I put 1 scoop of the oxi clean into the wash with it hoping it does something. I also use the Lysol sanitizer with it in the softener

The problem with this is bacteria are everywhere and most are not pathogenic so there is no need to remove them.

She is testing for reduction of bacteria overall in real world settings…don’t think she needs to differentiate between pathogenic and non pathogenic. And some people do need to reduce bacteria in their home environment due to compromised immune system. I appreciate these videos tremendously and think the work she is doing is very helpful.

@@FieldOfFocus Hi, thanks for considering my request. My task at hand is to clean, sanitize and rid the smell of cigarettes/incense from a velvetinish couch and 4 plushy dinning chairs, all without cleaning tags. On the chairs, I am starting with regular oxiclean powder mixed with hot water-to cool in a spray bottle. Spraying and spraying to dry. I have taken the cushions out of the covers and linings. The liners washed in buckets warm water with oxi powder 3 times, hung to dry. That worked. I put the core body of the cushions and covers outside to air. It is supposed to rain for 3 days. I am thinking of spraying them like the chairs and let them be rained on. I will spray the body of the couch, like the chairs. I started by vacuuming everything 3 times. I sprinkled generously with baking soda and vacuumed. Also, I have many open bowls of kitty litter, baking soda and white vinegar sitting under the couch. Any other suggestions would be great.🙏💡

That sounds like a huge task and it also sounds like you are doing a great job!!! I wonder if Odoban would be something to try for that smell of cigarettes and incence... I think what I would do is use a portable upholstery cleaner (like this one Testing How to Disinfect Fabric Surfaces: Bissell Spot Clean Pro & Lysol Spray. Did it work? kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZ2TYYh8ibt9g6c I wasn't pleased with the baceria removal BUT it gets up TONS of dirt and grime)... ok so I would use the upholstery cleaner even with just hot water at first to pull off as much grime as possible. Then I think I would use Odoban. I think the key will be drying it and doing it again and again until you get it all out. GOOD LUCK!

I don't believe so, because the ingredient in the Oxi sanitizer is totally different than regular Oxi, and regular Oxi makes no mention about germ killing, just whitening, brightening, and stain removal instead. I love the Oxi sanitizer. My husband was an ER nurse, and we had to wash his colored scrubs at home (eww) for the past 17yrs! I definitely preferred the Oxi Sani to the Lysol disinfectant for the wash smell/process wise. I still use it now that he works from home for towels and yuck wash items.
