The software failure of the Patriot Missile system is infamous in computer science and was taught as a case study in my Dependable Systems module for my degree. For those interested it was caused by a floating point error. Basically the software calculated the current time as (cpu_clock * 0.1), unfortunately 0.1 is a recurring number in base 2 (0.000110011001100...) and the targeting computer used a 24-bit register so there was an error of 9.5e-8 seconds. This error went unnoticed during the testing phase because the system was only active for a few hours at a time so the error had not compounded enough to affect performance. However in the field, after 100 hours of run time this error added up to 0.34s. A scud can travel roughly 500m in 0.34s. Every programmer naturally encounters this type of error at some point in their career, its a shame that in this case there were such deadly consequences.
@snapdragon6601 Жыл бұрын
That was a great explanation. I remember hearing about it when it was revealed to the public as the failure behind missing the Scud missiles. I just never really understood the mechanism behind it. Thanks. 👍

Wow, thanks for the info! I had learned about this in an engineering case study, but I think they just referred to it as an error with the clock. It’s amazing how such small things you’d never thing about can cause major errors. We’re not used to thinking about 0.1 as a repeating decimal because it isn’t in the base-10 system that we use. But computers use base-2.

The software glitch that allowed the SCUD to get through and hit Dhahran was due to the system being on over 100 hours and this led to the internal clock drifting by 1/3 of a second which was enough to cause the Patriot interceptor to miss by 600 metres. The designers had never anticipated that the system would ever be kept on continuously over such a long period. Until a software update was later released, the stopgap solution was to regularly reboot the Patriot system. Ironically the Israelis had identified the glitch two weeks prior and informed the Americans and delivered a fix the day before the Dhahran attack.
@flyinace542 жыл бұрын
When I was in college one of my comp sci professors loved to tell us this story, the clock drift was due to a rounding error because of what the programmers of the system used to represent the clock. Was really sobering to learn how something that isn't something you would think about as a programmer can have such a massive impact when the software is used real world.

SCUDs would fly overhead and just as they would get south of us a Patriot would intercept it and blow it out of the sky... It was pretty badass.... I never saw one miss a SCUD in those couple weeks. First Russia doesn't use SCUDs, the are what like from the 1940s and very slow, plus Iraq only had like 100 of them. Russia is not Iraq and has 400,000+ just from Lancet 3 cheap drone model and millions of missiles. It's worthless against Russia as it only have 43 Miles range and for many other reasons. first, Russia has electronic warfare that make radars and defense system detect 100 or 200 false targets and engage with them. i have seen videos from Ukraine where 50 defense missiles go to the air and explode with no targets. Second, Russia S-300 old missile from the 70s that they modified to hit grounds target fly at 9,000+ mph, they have 200,000+ of them and each can do such great damage that takes an entire mall. They can use 1000 of these and Patriot will be out of missiles. Third, cheap drones. Fourth, Russian fighters can detect it from 800+ km and destroy it, they don't have to enter it's 70km/43miles range. Fifth, Russia Kaliber missiles fly lower then 50 meters, it can fly as low as 4.5 meter, and Patriot systems can defend targets at only higher than 50 meters. Then speed, Russia S-200 from the 50s goes 17,000+ kmph .. basically it's a waste of money and time against Russia. I guess after this will be THAAD and then the US has no defenses. Good luck.

Cost efficiency is a tricky concept in war, when you turn everything into a war of attrition you repeat the mistakes of World War 1. Zero morale, no end in sight, if everything is just a numbers game in the end then victory for Russia would be inevitable. Show your citizens and soldiers you care, give the military peace of mind, warm clothing, let them rest when they need to, these are things even ancient generals understood. Yeah, there are many places in the US where they get 100 F temps, but what kills is having to live in a climate that has such a huge range of extremes! Thanks Cappy, lots of food for thought. It seems Patriot should be able to provide some degree of defense against incoming threats without being connected to a larger system. However, it would probably be more effective if it did receive signals from a whole network of stations, perhaps enabling operators to better prioritize targets which might also be taken out by systems operating independently of Patriot. So, yes, it will help Ukraine, but it remains to be seen if they will be able to make the optimal use of its capabilities. Thank you Cappy, for another great presentation of information. I think that the US so far keeps giving Ukraine almost but not quite enough to decisively win, but definitely the gift of one Patriot system for Kyiv, even though it is purely defensive, is sending a message to Russia that we will keep sustaining Ukraine right at survival level so that Russia can never win. I know there are many factors to this war, and if the US or NATO oversteps, we could ignite Armageddon. However, my heart goes out to the Ukrainians, who can never get just quite enough to use their amazing ingenuity and courage at full bore to quickly defeat the Russians. So I am hopeful that the one Patriot system, even with the limits it must have, will be of some help, and it presents an "open door" warning to Russia that at any time we can keep handing Ukraine more of these "purely defensive" systems. Giving the Patriot system to Kyiv is as much a psychological strike at Russia as it is strategic.

What the hell have the Ukrainians been doing ... since they cave into pressure from the US & Russian in 1994 ... to give up its tactical nukes, destroy its strategic bomers and ballistic missiles ... and allow Russia to retain its naval base in Crimea. Russia would have never attacked Ukraine ... if it still had its tactical nukes from the fall of the soviet union, which they could still use. The Budapest Memorandum in 1994 was only to benefit the US ... & ... Russia. The US only had to worry about Russia having nukes ... and ... Russia maintained its Naval base in Ukraine who no longer has nukes to defend its borders .... from Russia. WTF? No. Getting the best air defense system is not enough. The US & Uk ... need to give Ukraine BACK tactical nukes and ballistic missiles that they stupidly forced Ukraine to give up in 1994. But they will never do this because they are full of moronic LIBERALS .. who happily trade with dictatorships for cheap oil and labor .. and don't want to "escalate" and escalation by dictators who enjoy bully moronic liberal governments.

I think you're right on the theory of Ukrainians having been secretly trained on these systems. Worst case scenario, they never get to use that knowledge, and the world is none the wiser. Best case scenario, the US gets to send it to save civilian lives, and making Russia look even worse than it already does. I think a lot of the actions Putin has been taking have escalated the war massively, without us even really seeing it yet. Some of the powergrid being hit in Ukraine have caused power outages in neighbouring countries too, and these sorts of things are very very scary. Russia is already affecting so many countries outside of Ukraine negatively and it's only getting worse, but the way to retaliate against these threats take time to come up with and materialize. I think Putin doesn't realize it yet, but his new general has put Russia down a path where countries are now going to try and do everything they can to help Ukraine in more covert ways previously not explored, and I don't entirely rule out actual boots on the ground disguised as Ukrainian soldiers in the future, either.

Russia’s goal is to knock out 100% of Kyiv’s power and cause a surrender. They may well achieve this. The idea of using million dollar defense missiles against Iranian drones that cost only a few thousand dollars won’t work. I have friends in Kyiv that have been without heat or electricity for days. If Putin can establish this as normal, people will eventually leave. Despite all the positive western press, Putin has the advantage. The truth is UA is much more important to RU than the US. The ? Is if RU wins, will RU stop There? It’s not likely. He wants his legacy as the Russian leader who brought back mother Russia to its imperial position. This is either an epic battle or surrender…
@Bacontruffle2 жыл бұрын
@@atlantasailor1 I strongly doubt it. You are right in saying that using patriot missiles against drones is silly, but luckily that's not all the Ukrainians have. It's not really mentioned as much because, well... 60's systems aren't as flashy as top-of-the-line defence systems, but Gepard systems have been getting incredibly good results shooting down the Iranian drones (close to 100% effectiveness) and more and more of these systems are being sent in. Yes, getting the Swiss to allow the ammo for these things to be sent more to the Ukrainians is a bit of a drag, but something that can be fixed with time. Even if 100% of the power grid is destroyed, there are temporary solutions such as diesel generators etc. Leningrad survived 3 years of being besieged without surrendering in much, much worse conditions than Russia can force the Ukrainians into Coming from a legacy of a similar situation, the siege of Leiden in the 80 years war, I grew up learning just how much a determined people can put up with when they know their enemy won't stop until they are dead. Putin has made the same mistake that Hitler did in the 40's: he's fully demonized the Ukrainian people and committed atrocity after atrocity. While some people were on Russia's side at the start, now there is no way the Ukrainian people as a whole could surrender to Putin short of actual extermination.

You are damn straight the PAC-2 can make a difference. This thing is deadly. 1: It operates a little bit like the AIM-120 AMRAAM in that the missile generates a track file from the scanning radar to guide it to the target, instead of relying on fire control radar. The ground based radar maintains two way communication with the missile, such that both the missile's passive sensors and the ground based radar work together to find the target. This denies the target aircraft the normal warning from high frequency, high amplitude FCR usually required for radar guided munitions. Only at the last possible moment does the ground based radar switch to FCR mode to guide the missile in terminal phase to impact. The AMRAAM does something similar, except instead of using a radar positioned at the launch point (the aircraft it was launched from) it uses its own on-board radar. For the AMRAAM this is called TWS or Track While Scan. The PAC-2 does this, except it relies on the radar on the ground rather than a radar on the missile. 2: It has a home-on-jam feature. The PAC-2 is able to detect when it is being jammed, and when the missile tells the ground based radar that it is being jammed, that radar avoids entering FCR mode, switching the missile to home-on-jam mode. In home-on-jam the missile effectively becomes an anti-radiation missile. It seeks out the jamming signal and uses it for guidance. I cannot explain to you the amount of processing power necessary to isolate a jamming signal, but it is a lot. The fast Fourier transforms necessary to maintain a signal lock and what might seem to be random noise is not something the Russian's can duplicate, and it allows the PAC-2 missile to use the electronic warfare capabilities of the target against it. The Patriot missile is a highly advanced, complicated, nigh impossible to evade GBAD system that no one else on the planet has. It will require US contractors to operate.

ur g0dIy-hailed PAC-2 is useless against hypersonic. its very hard to detect - its target. ballistic can reach mach 10+ but its following a trajectory thus predictable. meanwhile, hypersonic can just glide on a hard-to-detect atmospheric level (the one just before the outer space) until it only gives the defender a very small window to react. once its on terminal stage, its technically impossible. mid-course interception is ur current greatest bet but damn it stays on that atmospheric thing that i am talking about

@@leexingha The United States is calling the hypersonic bluff. If they have them, let them use them. We will not be deterred. Many people are unable to think critically about hypersonic weapons. Let me tell you why hypersonic glide vehicles are bullshit: It is impossible to change course in atmosphere without losing speed. A hypersonic glide vehicle becomes plain old supersonic at its first turn, plain and simple. To maintain speed it needs propulsion and neither China nor Russia have the chops for SCRAM jets. So…. They are bluffing, and we are going to call it and watch them crumble. Pull up a chair and enjoy the show.

Doesn’t matter how effective it is. How much Raytheon will make does.

Lockheed Martin is the maker of PAC-3 missiles, not Raytheon, and Boeing makes MMW seekers for the PAC-3 missiles. Raytheon only makes the launchers with the AN/MPQ-53 fire-control radars.

@@seekrengr751 Who the hell cares? I was making a point that the only people benefiting from this, and many other wars, are these companies…and the politicians who seem to purposely start them. Because of lobbying from said companies? Now I’m not stupid, and am glad as hell these companies exist on our side, cuz if they didn’t, we’d be among the third world countries, but do so many people have to suffer, and do we have to pay so many taxes?

@@jimf1964 You probably do not realize that weapons procurement is a tiny part of the federal budget, less than 5%. The world is a dangerous place, and the only way to ensure a nation continues to exist is through strength, of that nation or its allies. Wars do not get started by "lobbying", contrary to teenage thinking. Defense contractors like Raytheon sell arms equally during war or peace - in fact, weapons now being contracted for the defense of Ukraine from US defense contractors are not even small potatoes. The big bucks (hundreds of billions) are in multi-decade programs like F35 (Lockheed Martin), strategic weapons (BM subs, Aircraft carriers) and strategic missile defense. Tactical weapons arsenals are built up during peacetime so they are ready for war, and no wars since Vietnam have caused actual wartime production uppers (with a couple exceptions like MRAP vehicles for the middle eastern wars).

@@seekrengr751 well, "child like" thinking doesn’t understand that Biden just signed a law where these companies can charge the government whatever they want, with no over sight, thanks to the planned war. Perhaps it isn’t a product of lobbying, but it sure as hell wasn’t an accident. If you tried to listen to something other than gov propaganda, you might notice that. As for your idiotic condescending explanation of the world, I suggest you actually read what I said before you start preaching from your soap box.

@@jimf1964 I read what you wrote. It's shallow, and nothing you have said since makes it any bit deeper. I have an experience base in this world, you clearly don't or you wouldn't be writing such simpleminded tripe. There's an entire branch of the DoD funded for oversight of contractors, it's called the DCAA. I guess the latest bill will do away with that agency? Doubt it.
