I've only recently started DE shaving and the Astra superior platinum has quickly become my go to blade. I'm trying a whole heap of new blades. Whenever I'm unhappy with the performance of a new blade, I take it out of the razor and finish the job with an Astra. Feathers are good too, but don't feel quite as smooth. For the price, you can't go wrong with Astra.

Russian blades are made by two different companies. One is in Moscow named Rapira, that produces the Rapira, Voskhod and Ladas blades. The other one is Gillette in St. Petersburg. They made most of the Gillette Blades, Astra and Sputnik blades, but also for other brands like Polsiver, Wizamet or Permasharp. And no, the blades are not all the same. Astra green are carbon steel blades (thats why they are rusting sometimes), Astra blue are stainless blades. Carbon steel blades are sharp and very flexible. They give you are very good shave, but wont last very long. You can extent the lifetime with a honing device for 1 or two more shaves. Stainless steel blades are stiff and long lasting, but not very comfortable. You cant extend their life with a honing device. Thats why carbon steel blades like Astra Green, Treet Black Beauty or Tatra Tiger blades are loved by lots of people.

More specifically, this company is not affiliated with the Gillette/P&G owned facility in St. Petersburg - as you correctly asserted. You are spot on with your description of carbon blades. Persons seeking the most consistent shaving experience often use carbon blades - as one and done.

I have only tried 3 blades since I started traditional wet shaving about 2 years ago. They are Astra SP Green, Gillette Platinum, and Feather. Of the 3, my favourite is the Gillette Platinum, followed by the Astra SP Green. I liked the Feather the least although it did give me the closest shave. The problem is that my neck felt raw afterwards. Because of the Gillette factory in Russia shutting down, I loaded up on GP blades. I now own 6 years and 5 months worth of GP’s. That is based on shaving every 2nd day and replacing the blade every 4 shaves.

Hi Matt. I am not surprised with the vintage Gillette Super Stainless blade being smooth. They are also long lasting; offering at least 8 great shave per blade. Those are in my blade rotation. The absolute smoothest are the vintage, made in England, Wilkinson Sword blades. The manufacturer said they would give a week's worth of shaves and they do! The longest lasting blade honor is held by the Personna *74. I get 23 shaves (these are a full 4 pass shave, not a one pass shave) before I think it is time to retire it and select a new blade. Great video! Yes, horde the Gillette Super Stainless, but only after you sell me some!!!

This is one of the best "comparison" reviews I've seen. I've always been confused about blades. I did buy a sample pack when I got back into wet shaving. Most of the blades I tried were about the same in comfort and performance. The blades I liked the least were Treet, Derby Premium, Lord Platinum, and Astra Blue. The Feather was okay but I felt like it was overrated and/or overhyped. It turned out that my favorite blade was the Astra Green. Then a few months ago I tried a Nacet blade based on favorable comments in videos by other wet shavers. I never know if I can really tell a difference but I thought the Nacet blade was slightly sharper and gave me just as smooth a shave as the Astra Green. I've not taken the time to try different blades in different DEs simply because I just think the whole process would be too subjective with no real metric other than my built-in bias. All I can say is that I've never had a bad shave in any of my DEs using an Astra Green or Nacet. But if I could never buy another Astra or Nacet, I'm sure there are blades to take their place. All I know is that my DE shave is closer, smoother, and more comfortable than any shave I've had with a cartridge.

That's cool, Treet Platinum and Lord Platinums are up there with SuperMax Super Stainless, Sharp, Gillette 7 0'clock sharp edge, Permasharp and Feather for me, all depending on the razor I'm using and how much I let my hair grow out first (I'm a head shaver). I love how the blade feel really does vary from person to person with so many to try out.

My mileage has proved Voskhod not labeled Teflon Coated as my #1. Treet black carbon for my #2. Shark Super Chrome for #3 And I haven't used a Wilkinson Sword in a few years but have 100 of them in a box. It doesn't matter for me what razor I put my blades in. Last night's shave was a Treet black carbon in a Vikings Blade Meiji adjustable at 3.5. Usually, I like a Merkur 34c open comb, not bar or scalloped. I have a Gillette traveler similar to an Edwin Jagger 89 in my luggage.

Great video. I often have these thoughts about blades when deciding what to load into a razor. I don’t think blades are all that similar. For me, Voskhod Teflon or Lord Platinum on the first use in an aggressive razor is a sweet spot as is a second use Feather or first use Kai in a mild razor. Astra Green are good all around. I agree with that. But I never get a good cut with them. They’ll always be medium. Sometimes you want to feel like you’ve scratched the itch and they don’t for me.

I've only been shaving with a DE razor for just over a month now and love it. I have a King C Gillette, Merkur 34C, and Parker 87R. I bought a variety pack of blades to try. So far i find the Feather Hi-Stainless to be scary aggressive, and the Lord Cool to be very gentle (but requires a bit of digging to get a close shave). I'm enjoying mixing and matching to see what results I get.

I love the Feather in the right razor, and I used one yesterday in my Envoy XL and today the second use in my Ambassador. WIth the Envoy I should have stopped at two passes but went three and got a good result but with razor burn. WIth the Ambassador I went settings 3-2-1 and got a BBS but should have stopped at two passes. I just got a sleeve of the Perma-Sharp blades delivered today and already have sleeves of the Feather and my other favorite Gillette Nacet. Astra green and blue are good, along with Derby Extra.

I've been DE shaving for close to 15 years now. For me, all the blades that come from St. Peterburg P&G factory feel the same. People spend months comparing them and arguing which one is better, but to me, they are the same blade in a different package. I've tried Gillettes (Platinums, Silver Blue, Stainless, Minora, Nacet...), Astras, Polsilvers, Perma... probably over a dozen different blades, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to tell them apart in a blind test.

I like using a Feather blade in a Gillette Blue Tip razor. I always get a close, nick free shave.

I actually have a funny story about my one and only time using a vintage Gillette blade. Last year I had to travel on a long road trip, so I packed one of the old Gillette Celebrity Razor Kits for convenience. I packed other various travel size soaps, aftershave, etc. But when I got to my destination and needed to shave, I realized that I did not pack a blade. The Celebrity Razor Kit had a Gillette Super Stainless blade in it, but I swore I’d never use it because of its age. Through gritted teeth, I reluctantly loaded the blade into the travel razor and took a swipe. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it did and actually enjoyed the shave. You may have some competition for stashing those blades after that experience. Thanks for the video Matt!

My daily driver razor blade is either a Feather or a KAI. At times for the change I use a Nacet or a Lord. My razor is the Merkur 50C Progress, I usually have it on or around number 3. For me, a Feather never tugs on my beard and I have to be very careful the first shave with it. Because if I don't respect the blade it will bite me, but I get an awesomely close shave from it. A KAI blade is a little more forgiving on the first shave for a blade that shaves as close as it does.

I've been pleasantly surprised with vintage blades. I bought some Gillette super stainless to go with my brother's 50th present which he'll get soon. I added an extra tuck for myself and they were superb, as were the vintage Scottish Perma-sharp blades that I was gifted by another member of one of the forum's I'm on - and all because I used a NOS 1950 Tech I bought rather than leaving it sealed. Both of these blades, over 50 years old were some of the better shaves I have managed since I started DE shaving last year. The Perma-sharp was paired with my birth year slim (sourced and restored for me by yourselves, thanks) and was brilliant. Currently I tend to default to either the current Perma-sharp, and in my Tech I use a Nacet. Agree totally about giving some of these vintage blades a whiz, as they have also outlasted the modern blades I use by 2 or 3 shaves!

Matt💈💈 Nice comparison test, thanks. I've been through a lot of different branded blades, my experience may be a bit different as subjective as shaving is. I think the geographic area of manufacture has a lot to do with blade "feel/comfort". YMMV as this is just my observation. Polish Wizamet, Polsilver, Personna 74 Tungsten and Gillette Stainless(Red) are some real favorites but alas availability issues, so Israeli Red Personna, Nacet, Gillette Swede Platinum and Perma Sharp are now go to blades for me. But, things can change....😉

Great video, Matt! Please keep more blind blade tests coming for future videos. Now, you may send me down the rabbit hole of vintage blades. 🤣 I've purchased/created a few sample packs with a total of 60+ different blades, and am halfway through. I created a very basic spreadsheet to track them with the following categories: brand, name, coating, sharpness, smoothness, try again?, and notes. It's a simple, but effective tool that I have right on my phone. Blade preferences are so subjective and the common philosophy of YMMV, is very true. Some popular highly touted blades tore me up, while other lesser known blades work well for me. I like blades that are fairly sharp, but they MUST be smooth. One lesser known blade that is my overall favorite, is the Silver Star (made by Lord), which I consider the Rolls-Royce of blades-a balance of sharp AND smooth. It's perfect for my medium coarse, medium density, medium sensitive skin, medium aggressive razors, and has lasted me up to 7 shaves. It's in my regular rotation of a dozen blades and I've purchased 300 of them in case of a shavepocolypse. I'm sure others will disagree, so YMMV. Now, I'm on the mission to find some of those vintage Posilvers, Perma-Sharps, WS-UK, 74's, Gillette Stainless, Spoilers, etc. Thanks again.

Awww, Proraso isn’t boring! Come on!……… Been a Proraso man for over ten years, although, I have strayed, but Proraso is my home, my go to shave stuff. There are some really good artisan soaps (WTF, Wet The Face), but Proraso is king. As far as blades, I am a straight razor shaver, Thiers Issard is my go to, but I have a Dovo, Boker and a few Gold Dollar razors. Love the channel, see you again.

For me I have settled on what I think is a middle of the road blade, the Wilkinson Sword from Germany. The Feather blades not only glided through my beard, they also glided through my skin. Any small bump or imperfection on my face got shaved of as efficiently as my beard. On the other hand I found the Derby blades had to be dragged across my beard. And even after multiple passes, would not get me to a BBS smooth shave. For me the Wilkinson turned out to be my “Goldie Locks”.

I just tried the Wilkinson Sword today and it gave an excellent shave. While not as sharp as my favourite Astra green, it's sharp enough and smoother. I can't stop caressing my super smooth chin.

I don't much like the Feather blade myself. The vintage blades have given me some of my best shaves, and they've lasted longer than most modern blades. Of course, I've had nothing but great results with all Gillette blades, both modern and vintage. Great comparison, Matt.

I told you so. I’ve been wet shaving for over 60 years mostly with a Gillette FatBoy and I have to laugh at all these self proclaimed experts who go on about “this blade’s better than that one”. The secret is in face preparation as taught to me by my uncle, a retired barber, back in the late ‘50’s. Any blade in today’s market will allow a nice shave if you know what you’re doing. A Rex Envoy is an excellent razor in my opinion.

When I first tried wet shaving with a DE, I had a variety pack of the most popular blades. Most all of them were what I'd consider good in performance and ease of shave. Maybe a few seemed to have less durability. I settled on the Astra Superior Platinums, so bought 100 blades, and don't feel a need to ever try double dipping again (although maybe try a Feather again, since I notice reviews seem to heavily prefer it). I would think you are correct that a manufacturer is retooling individual runs....considering how cheap blades are (example, Russian vacuum tubes cost a fair amount, while vintage vacuum tubes are getting exorbitantly priced). They also don't have to examine every blade the way CPU manufacturers have to check every processor to be able to determine what speed processor it will be sold as.

This test is very much like how evaluating blades from a set of assorted samples is done. (Sample packs) Each time I do a shave with each sample, I do pay attention to sharpness, tugging, abrassiveness, smoothness, cuts to the skin, and even efficiency (like did I need a whole third pass, or was two passes enough). Much later, I know which blades were similar and which I did not like.

I used to work for a forklift manufacturer and we would produce models similar to our own for some of the other companies that did not make that class on their own. I think it was because that was not a large part of their market but still needed them to satisfy all their customers. The ones we made with our name in them had higher end parts and the software controlling them allowed for higher performance. The ones me made for the other companies used lower (not bad just lower) quality parts and also the software insured lower performance. Sort of like your car can be speed limited by a chip and people buy after market chips to improve performance. Now granted there is way more going into a forklift than a razor blade but I too would like the inside scoop. Maybe they run through another step to make sharper or coatings are different? Or like Matt said better run of blades were sold as the high end blades.

Another great video Matt. Always enjoy the history. This was a great idea and really puts home the idea of different strokes for different folks. As you said, you have to try blades to see how you like them, as one person’s fav could be another’s worst. I have several that I use (PermaSharp, Gillette Blues, Gillette Silver Blues, Persona Comfort, Ladas, Vokshod, Feather, and PAA’s Strangelet). So far, I really like PAA’s blades in all of my razors. I love the Supply Co’s Black Label single edge injectors. They are very sharp, and in my Parker Adjustable injector are the bees knees. I tried a lot of other injector blades (all modern) and didn’t really like any of them. I also want to try Henson’s new custom blades. I’ve been wet shaving now for about 12-years plus. I won’t be searching out any vintage blades, but it’s a neat concept and to watch how one shaved. Looking forward to more great videos from you and RE, Shave On!!

I remember liking Shark, Big Ben, Lord, Astra Green, and Feather. I can't remember exactly what handles I used them in, probably my 46ish Gillette Aristocrat. I was using a variety pack learning how to shave DE so those are all gone now but I ended up buying a 100 pack of Feather and Astra Green so I will probably never have to buy blades again but I would love to try something else out there but I don't want to have a big stack of blades lying around. I can tell you for sure that the Feather, Shark, and the Astra Green work well in the Rex Ambassador. I would probably say that the Astra is a little better than the Feather. You gotta use different settings for the different blades. I find the feather has me going to the lowest setting and the Astra goes a half-turn above it. Can't wait for the Konsul to arrive.

Another thought that just came up, why not try the same blade in different razors? A known and trusted blade in a Rockwell, Vintage Gillette and one or two other razors. See if the quality of the shave changes.

Great test Matt! I've thought about buying vintage blades (most notably Personna 74), but I'm too concerned that I would like them so much that I'd then try to buy as many as possible. That wouldn't be fair to my wallet or other people who might want to try them or add a tuck to their collection. As far as the manufacturing process goes, I suppose it's possible that they could call the beginning of a run their premium blade, the middle of their run the mid-grade blade, and the end of the run their bargain blade but there would still be a lot of variation between early the the "premium" and late in the "premium". It makes more sense to me that they're doing quality checks as a run of blades is being made and they're constantly making minute adjustments to the banks of grinding wheels to maintain bevels where they want them to be. They could be making all of the blades with the same steel, but I'm pretty sure they're purchasing these rolls of steel ribbon based on specific alloy and then doing different grit/bevel angles, and heat treatment on the blades for a specific hardness and temper for that blade.

Hi Matt, wow! Great honest video without the silliness of what's a good blade and what isn't. Maybe, we all need to do a blind test, but with two identical razors, I think 3 was one to many. Is it conceivable to alter the cutting edge on a tool by 'half a thou' (that's probably too much anyway, but you know what I mean) to get a different edge, I think so, otherwise, this whole razor blade industry would be one big scam. I think that there is only one guarantee for a sharp blade that's going to perform ok, and that's got to be on its first use, like how it's supposed have been. Any other secondary use can't be as sharp and if it's not as sharp like new, then how can it perform as good or as close? (Btw, I have 2 KingCGillette for such experiments but I've never done it blind, I will now) Cheers for the vid, all the best

I used a old Gillette thin blade b4 and it was really tuggy. But I also have a handful of spoilers, and newer Gillette “super thins” but I don’t think the super thins are vintage they might be from like the 80s or early 90s.

I feel like most DE blades are hard to distinguish, the only truly terrible blades I've used were Personna Labs from Amazon.

Oh there some truly ordinary blades out there. The Schick blades that came with the cheap Schick razor I bought from Aldi were horrible. Blunt and rough, but sharp enough to nick you. The razor itself was ok. Not a fan of the Muhle or Tiger blades either. But I guess it comes down to personal preference.

I used to work in a factory that produced jams. We would run the same product through the line and label one as the company brand then change the label and keep the line running with a grocery store brand. In manufacturing, it is all about throughput. So your theory about running multiple brands through the same run are likey true. The longer a factory can continually run a product, the cheaper it is to make. It's that simple.

The videos l have seen of blade production stamp the branding before the blades are cut from the strip. This would make sorting by brand impossible. I think more likely they use different stones and coatings. Some probably are the same. For example, l think King C Gillette blades are the same as Gillette Platinum.

I heard so many good things about Nacet that I bought some. Still came in behind Silver Blue, Gillette Platinum, and Voskhod. But as I think they all come from the same factory in Russia, all four could be the same blade packaged in different wrappers. As Matt says "who knows."

I happen to like feathers. I've found I have less irritation with sharper blades and I heard once that feathers were sharp and I haven't switched since 😂

How do you feel about the idea of guys getting permanent hair removal like electrolysis on their neck and maybe also areas of the face like the upper cheek where one wouldn't want hair even when growing a full beard?

Matt, little off subject but I draw on your Gillette knowledge. I just received a Gillette Heritage from Amazon. I noticed that there is an “8” on the back of the top cap. I seem to remember that in some of the earlier reviews of this razor they said there was a ”4” on the cap. Any ideas as to if this is a date code or just a manufacturing code?

I noticed that each of the blades got removed with fingers on the sharp ends, rather than the overhang ends. MEGA CRINGE! I could practically feel the blades sinking in deep (for which I think more than a styptic would be necessary). I love Techs of any age, including the early heavy Techs of this video. Simplicity itself and very well engineered. I'd like to put in a word for the current Tech, the Gillette 7 O'clock Sterling razor, from Gillette India, which has a Tech head virtually identical to the Techs of the mid 1960s, albeit also having a crummy looking handle that nonetheless performs amazingly well with the Tech head on it. The Sterling's current price on E‒Bay is well under $10 (shipped) for what can be a lifetime, well‒performing, razor. This is, IMHO, exceptional value for money. Twice I've received off of E‒Bay razors that have a Gillette New head on a handle of the kind in the three razors of this video. I had assumed that these of mine are Franken Razors, but might I have been wrong: did Gillette ever put these heavy handles on its New razors, in addition to Bar and Ball Handles? Coincidentally, today I shaved with a vintage Spoiler blade (Z3, 1979), and I agree the old Spoiler is very, very, good. It doesn't surprise me at all that a vintage Super Stainless out performs most blades, then or now. Also, Gillette currently makes a "Super Stainless" blade in its Russian plant, which I've used (although not recently), and which seemed to perform well like the Spoiler. I'd enjoy seeing a comparison of the two blades on this channel. (So too a comparison of the vintage Gillette Platinum Plus blade and the current Gillette Platinum Plus from Brazil. My impression, which is not recent, is that each performs very similarly, but the vintage Platinum Plus lasts a little longer, although this might just be me.) The video mentions the Gillette Platinum as a higher end blade, and FWIW I think Gillette believes this also. A few weeks ago I used respective Platinum and King C. Gillette blades one after the other, and for the life of me, I could not tell the difference, either in sharpness, smoothness, or durability. The blades seemed to be photostats of one another, EXCEPT IN PRICE. (Good 'ol Gillette.) Has anyone had this experience? FWIW, I've always had generally excellent results with vintage blades. For the holidays, I got some Personna 74's, and the first blade out is still going strong after ten nice uses. I even once got several good uses from a Gillette Thin Blade (Thin, not Super Thin, red and black package, not the red and white package. An old, old, blade.) However, I have gotten poor results from Gillette Blue Blades, and mixed results from Super Blues. Might I have a citation to the book mentioned in the video? I'd like to try to get a copy of it. @@christopherthompson3313 I do like the Super Platinum blades also, and I hope you enjoy your Sterling as much as I do mine. I'm continually surprised by how well the razor performs despite having such a crummy, ill‒balanced, handle. It might be that the handle is so long that merely laying the razor head on the face generates a torque against the beard, minimizing the force needed from the wrist to get good facial contact. Anyway, that's my theory, and there are always handles from other razors to mix and match. Best wishes.

In it, Matt suggests that the Gillette Platinum and King C. Gillette blades are pretty much the same. I seems I rediscovered something already known at least a year ago. Apologies and mea culpa.

There are times when a Feather is the perfect blade for me, which are the majority of my shave sessions...and there are times when the Astra, or the Personna hit that sweet spot. And there are a few that if it came down to going to the wedding looking like the "before" version of a five alarm shave emergency or using that Dollar General budget blade...I guess I choose the non-bloodied Chewbacca look. To me, it seems to depend on a number of factors whether a blade works best or not. You said it yourself, Matt...maybe its the prep. I agree. That's why I use an adjustable. If its to aggressive, tone it down. Five alarm stubble bubble on my face? Turn it up a few notches. However, that Dollar General budget blade is better off melted down and used as a slug.
