From what I've heard the salmonella is mainly in the excretions of the animals which is part of the reason why turtles are more known for transmitting the bacteria. Since turtles swim in the same water they poop in, they can get some of the bacteria on their shell whereas other reptiles really don't go through their own poop so they are less likely the have the bacteria on them.

do you think my 7 month old corn snake can give me salmonella and plz answer imeidietly
@GoHerping7 жыл бұрын
Any animal can give you salmonella, however, there's an extremely low chance. It never even comes to mind for most reptile keepers, as it barely ever happens, especially since you have a snake compared to something with a slightly higher chance like a turtle. So short answer, I highly doubt it and you shouldn't worry

My friends always freak when I tell them this... but I have had salmonella at least twice, up to four times (it was so similar to how my friends felt with a flu that I don't really know...). The reason is that I raise ducklings and chicks, and was getting used to the bacteria of birds. I know many people get it so badly, but mine was never too bad, and honestly worth the experience I have had with my birds. Just glad I haven't had it in a few years :)

I have a corn snake, and I was wondering if I let my corn snake on my couch or something, and then a few days later come to eat something on my couch, could that give me salmonella?

I’m always worried that if I let my bearded dragon out while I do school and then later if I touch the same pencil that I used earlier and forget it had bacteria on it then I could contract salmonella. Is this an irrational fear or does salmonella actually spread like that?
@rihasanatrofolo24724 жыл бұрын
A little late, but yeah that's kinda how it works. Like all bacteria though, it can't survive on its own in open air so it's eventually gonna die on whatever it's sitting on, which at that point makes it safe cause dead bacteria can't do anything.

Can a non-infected reptile get it from something? I have heard that it is the food, aka the roaches who carry it, is that true?
@CamStLouis7 жыл бұрын
Perhaps someone has already said this, but the reason turtles under 4 inches are illegal to sell is simply because children can fit them in their mouths more easily, possibly exposing them to salmonella.

Part of the food vs reptile stats for salmonella contraction is that people wash their hands after touching reptile because of fear of salmonella, and cookie dough is irresistible.

Hey I have a question and I was wondering if you could answer it so I have a baby gray rat snake very very similar to the corn snake and I'm not sure if this is normal I fed him a live pinkie the first few times cause he wouldn't eat frozen and he wouldn't constrict the mouse just eat it live and the same with frozen is this normal
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
I noticed that young snakes don't always constrict their prey, even if they are a constrictor species like rat snakes. For example, my ball python didn't constrict his prey for the first couple months, however, he now completely constricts the food. As long as they're getting the right food down (and keeping it down), you should be just fine.

@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
Anywhere from 20 to 40 gallons is great for ball pythons. If you want to add a nice size water feature, you should probably go with a 30 or 40 :)

im confused, when you buy the turtle that 4 inches or less does it limit on how big it will get ?
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
No, when turtles are very young (less than 4 inches), there's a higher chance that they are carrying the salmonella bacteria. The chance of them having it once they're older (more than 4 inches) decreases so it's much safer
@RadiantReptilia8 жыл бұрын
Also, there was a problem with babies picking them up a swallowing them (like babies do).

Your turtles claws are very long. Let him walk on some rough rocks to file them down

Male sliders naturally have long claws on the front which are necessary for mating. It is true that many other animals need a way to file down their claws though!

What if i have a cut on my hand, and i were to handle a smaller turtle? (about 4 inches) Would the bacteria enter my immune system via the cut?

Touching anything with an open wound is a bad idea, although im not sure if salmonella can be contracted via your bloodstream. I'd suggest not finding out though
