Today we're taking another viral science video, this time from 5 min crafts, and seeing if anything in the video is real. Can you actually make snow with salt and vinegar? Does salt make coke erupt like when you put mentos in coke? Does putting salt on a string and ice cube fuse them together? Will salt help you clean up glue? Do salt and vinegar clean pennies?

I don't know if anyone else has commented this, but the second one happens because salt is acting like mentos to a smaller degree. Mentor gets the reaction with coke and other sodas because of the texture of the mentos. It's got a rough texture so the the carbonation likes to go to it and gets lodged in the mentos and that rapid movement of the carbonation is what causes the reaction. The same thing is happening with the salt in number 2 but to a smaller degree as salt is smoother and has a lot less surface area. If you want to recreate the same effect overall you want a lot of salt for it.

@@christophermull800 It was this challenge where people put some ice in the palm of their hand, and then poured salt onto it which made it much colder. DON'T do this, it's given people burn-like marks from doing it, and it only takes a few seconds to cause the marks.

As for the coke and salt one. There's a bit of missing information here. It's not normal salt it's rock salt specifically that's used. The reason for the effect is nucleation, rock salt has a larger and more jagged surface area for increased nucleation points. This is discussed in more detail in Mythbusters episode 57: Diet Coke and Mentos.

There was a mentos in th measuring cup with the salt. That's why they did a super white background to white wash the mentos as much as possible. Once the mentos securely made it into the bottle, then they did a sudden fast dump to get the rest of the salt in.

Since the salt works to pick up the glue like that... I wonder, might it do the same for say, candle wax? Will it clean up the glue spilled on carpet? What about other types of glue? I'm definitely keeping the salt trick in mind from now on so I don't have to wait for it to dry and peel it up.

The soda and Mentos geyser is not actually a chemical reaction, but rather a physical one. Any kind of object with a porous/rough surface will cause the carbonation to begin to for bubbles within the carbonated substance. Salt, sugar, the aforementioned Mentos(only mint, as the fruit flavor has a carnuba wax coating to make them shiny, but it also makes a smooth surface, so no bubbles form) even rough pebbles would work.

You can do the salt and glue trick with salt or sugar if you spill nail polish on tiles or wood (doesn't work on carpet obviously) but yeah. I've done it and it actually works to help clean it up without smearing it everywhere.

Just fyi, home freezers are usually set much closer to 0 degrees than 32 degrees. Otherwise things like ice cream wouldn't be nearly cold enough to stay frozen, since other substances have a lower freezing point than water

For the 2nd trick they used a large I think 2 liter bottle of coke, this means there is A LOT more coke that will react with the salt, and it has to go trough the same opening (all the bottles have the same caps), so you would get a higher fountain!

The coke and salt foam, the small bottles have less liquid and less CO2 dissolved. The bottles have the same size opening. If one drops a large enough amount of salt into the coke, more pressure can be realised in larger bottle.
