Can Senzu Beans Regrow Limbs (Analysis)

Some people debate whether or not a Senzu bean could've allowed Future Gohan to grow his arm back if he took it instead of giving it to Trunks, and some doubt the abilities of the Senzu. Today, I'll be analyzing it scientifically to get an answer!

If it was a fresh still bleeding wound, it probably would have grown back. But if it was a healed and left a scar, it wouldn’t grow back. The proof is the fact that the scars on Yamchas face don’t get healed.

They had the saiyan healing pod but that was shown to not regrow limbs, because it didn't regrow vegeta's tail in the intermission of the saiyan and namek sagas.

In Dragon Ball Super Broly, Goku states to Broly, Chelai and Lemo that senzu beans heal you from any injury and restores you back to full power, however it doesn't work on illnesses. You can reference this back to when goku took a senzu bean when he had the heart virus and it did nothing.

I would say yes because senzus can fully heal the body's cells to heal things severe like broken bones, although I do doubt that arms can be regrown from senzus

I think it depends on how fresh the wound is along with how much of the original tissue is still intact. Senzu also have other limits. As someone else mentioned, extremely old scar tissue (even from relatively minor cuts) can't be healed . Yamcha's facial scars don't disappear. It should also be noted that they can't reverse aging (gradual cell decay and death). Nor can they get rid of a virus. In fact, given that senzu heal living things, they'd probably only make a virus (a living organism itself) stronger. So senzu do have limits and caveats. Yamcha's damage was fresh after Gero impaled him, he lost a lot of blood and suffered tears and bruises to the tissue, but the cells were all still there for the senzu to stitch back together and restore. As for regrowing Gohan's arm, it depends on the state of his arm at the moment of injury. We don't know if it was sliced clean off, or was just mangled to such a degree that an emergency amputation was needed. The dialog from the English dub of History of Trunks makes it sound like the latter case. When Trunks carries Gohan home, Bulma makes a shocked exclamation at Gohan's arm, tells him "this is going to hurt" and then we hear Gohan yelling in pain. We don't SEE the events, but the dialog makes it sound like Bulma performed an amputation. This may or may not have followed Toriyama's idea of the scene, but it's one interpretation. If Gohan's arm was merely manged but still had most of the tissue present, a senzu probably would have helped. But if his arm was just cut clean off and lost, I doubt anything could have been done to save it. I don't think senzu can really regrow limbs.

I don’t think yamchas organs grew back since they weren’t necessarily ripped out just punctured, if gohan had slightly damaged his arm that meat that was damaged would either heal or grow back but I don’t think his whole arm would grow back since he did lose the whole arm

On one hand, the arguments made here make perfect sense and I'd tend to agree that they could regrow limbs. It's pretty obvious Senzu can heal any injury to the body. However, it's impossible to say for sure whether or not it can actually regrow a limb if it's been completely severed from the body, or if it would just heal over the bloody stump that was left. So until we actually see this scenario happen in the manga or anime, or a statement from Toriyama, it's a Schrodinger's Cat scenario. It both can and can't until it's observed to be one or the other.

I always wondered this myself. I agree that the arm wouldn't grow back if it had time to become scar tissue though. With that in mind however, if you removed the scar tissue, cut off more of the arm, would the arm be restored fully, or just to the scar tissue?

It likely depends how long you were going around without the limb. The body eventually doesn't consider it as a part of the body and adapts.

personally, while your argument about complexity does make sense, i feel that the power of a senzu bean is more about mass of the restored area and the strength of the bean dosage. not to mention that senzus don't seem to heal scarred tissue whether it was a toriyam-isn like mistake; (as with forgetting about launch and super saiyan 2 among other things.) so to sum up, i think that if gohan had managed to have a full senzu bean instead of half (though that might have been a dubism) or none he might have gotten his arm back or at least a vestigial limb that at least looked like an arm.

i think senzus can fix any injuries therefore regrow limbs. however, it cannot fix any scars as they are no injuries anymore so if gohan took a senzu 20 after he lost his arm it wouldnt grow back

I'm still always confused about this and not sure if there was reason or not, but why didn't Future Gohan take the Senzu Bean? I mean looking a Trunks at this part Gohan protected him from the blast, taking the bulk of it, taking most of the damage and losing his arm. Trunks I don't think was dying, injured sure, but I don't think he was as bad as Gohan was. Gohan should've taken the Senzu bean, restored himself to 100%, taken Trunks back to Bulma to recover normally. Things could've played out the same, but I think Gohan would've done better after the Zenkai boost even if it was 2 on 1. His first mistake was bringing Trunks in the first place because he become a reliability and Gohan had to focus on trying to protect Trunks while fighting both Android 17 & 18. Gohan still could've been killed and everything still played out the same, but I feel Gohan taking the bean over Trunks wouldn't been the better of the two choices. Maybe Gohan was worried that Bulma would've been mad at him for bringing Trunks home injured instead of how it played out. Still if she thought about it and knew he took such a bad injury over how much less Trunks injuries were then she would've eventually calmed down. It not like Trunks didn't go off later and end up having to recover like Gohan did when he was older. She didn't get angry then. Well that's why we have, "What if's" to fill in for things like this.

It would, take Lord Yamcha as an example , Gero put his hand through Yamcha's chest, after eating a senzu, the chest recovered. But Future Gohan's arm wound has been wounded for so long it became a scar. That's why a senzu couldn't heal him

NEONANNALS not really senzu beans don’t revive the dead and Goku was hit dead center hitting a major artery which that kind of wound would leave him dead in seconds if he were to survive the attack beyond impalement (unlike Yamcha which thanks to his gi we can actually get a really good idea where the wound is Gero’s arm punches straight through him and pops out the other side hitting on his lower left side just below the heart which isn’t immediately fatal because it misses the major arteries and organs that would cause instant death I mean he likely wouldn’t survive too much longer however he would realistically last long enough to eat a senzu bean) there wouldn’t have been time if and this is the big one if he had any senzu beans on him at the time
