1:35 - This point is actually great to make. Kim Deal, bassist for Pixies and lead singer of The Breeders, once pointed out how hard it was for bassists to not add some flair or show-off whenever they were playing her basslines. She said it was the hardest thing in the world for some people to just keep basslines simple. There is an art to it, certainly.

Canonball is a fun song in part because it is a compendium of every mistake a beginner band could make. Coming in on the wrong note, and fixing it in the next bar like maybe nobody will notice. Vocals coming in on the wrong beat, and skipping half a verse of words like "I meant to do that". Just canonballing past every screwup. On purpose. You hear it, they've moved on, it works. Fantastic song.

01:45 "They'll always find something to complain about" Spot on! I'm always reminded of Goggin's quote "If you can walk on water, your haters will say it's cos you can't swim". Recognition and approval from others is good to have but it's always better to set your own standards and goals. So you can continue to put in the work and earn the respect of your own self, regardless of the validation and opinions of others. Just keep building that stack of undeniable proof that you are who you say you are and eventually want to be. It's probably the only way to build genuine self confidence.

Spot on, about Victoria, and other bassists like that. Simple doesn't mean bad. And TBH, the only people who like crazy basslines, technical basslines, fast basslines, all-over-the-neck-trying-to-play-a-solo basslines, are other bassists. I think they're cool and fun. It shows talent. But, it usually does nothing for the song...especially when writing commercially viable songs. Maneskin are great. They all fit their role perfectly. Victoria plays her role. She compliments the drummer. She helps uphold the rhythm and beat. Bass and drums are what you dance to, in a lot of music. Victoria is absolutely a great artist.

What some people might be missing as well, in that first clip of Gene, he's clearly focusing on playing the crowd and building hype as opposed to laying down a heavy baseline. A good performer doesn't just play their instrument, but they play the crowd as well, get them riled up and excited! Especially considering a lot of people who go to concerts don't necessarily have the expendable income to do it whenever, it's usually something they save and plan for, and you want to give those people a good show! When my band was performing (small deathcore garageband, our biggest show was like...20 or 30 people lol) I had this thing I did which was basically just making random guttural sounds. It was simple, easy, but the crowd would always reply in turn, so while it wasn't a "display of my true vocal talent", it got the crowd engaged and excited! KISS is doing it on a much grander scale than a few 20 year olds like me and my band were back in the day, but the same concept still applies! ^-^

@@xMcWeenx That's kind of a different thing though. There's serving the song whether it's catchy or not, and then there's writing catchy songs. There's plenty of good music where the point isn't to be catchy. The artistic vision for a lot of music isn't about chasing earworms.

@@herpyderpy4366 I've had similar discussions about various forms of expression. The world of literature needs its Shakespeares as much as it needs it's Stephen Kings. The art of music must come in just as varied forms and the arrogance some music fans show has them missing out on some wonderful experiences. We need our Bachs and our Beethovens, our Beatles and our Rollings Stonse, our Cat Stevens and Leonard Cohens, and our Taylor Swifts and Lady Gagas. All forms of expression are there to distill the human condition down into a form that we can share. Great pop tunes that makes you just wanna get up and dance is just as important as the experimental artist creating unique and complex soundscapes.... the key, I think, is the artist following their instinct as a creator and not simply chasing a quick buck... that invariably produces work that satisfies no-one.

I guess with recent performances people have started to question her bass playing ability but I think it’s only because she’s showing so much skin. I can’t believe people would question Flea though. @Patrick-857 when people make millions playing an instrument the idea that people make mistakes goes out of the window for me. I am a musician surrounded by great musicians not making even close to 100 000 per year and they all can keep a tempo. Something so basic as keeping tempo with the amount of years he’s played wouldn’t land him a job anywhere. It’s only because he’s part of that band that he can get away with it. At that level you need to be better at your instrument and not struggle with the basics. Look at Ringo Star, not a phenomenal drummer in terms of showing of but he knew how to do the basics well. Because of that I respect Ringo even though he made more than almost any drummer while being quite mid. As I said People don’t make mistakes at that level for that kind of money. If they do they are incompetent and lucky someone else is carrying them.

Here's mine: while he gets a lot of respect, Geddy Lee does not get enough. I once saw him singing lead, while playing the keyboard with one hand, while playing open strings on the bass with the other, while playing Taurus pedals. That is an incredible amount of skill.

Flea was probably the first bass player I recognized as special and doing something unique, not hard to see. It took me a while to realize many of the bass players from my favorite bands, late 80’s/90’s were doing unique things that really made the songs sound the way they did, much more than just following the guitars.
