Watchmojo putting "Dazed and Confused" on their top 10 basslines list made Led Zeppelin (especially John Paul Jones) look a bit like stupid musicians but they actually weren't. There are so many better basslines John Paul Jones had written such as "Ramble On" and "How Many More Times"...

Let's face it, there are hundreds of excellent bass lines out there, from "I'm a Man" by The Spencer Davis Group to James Jamerson "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" through Yes, Primus, Metallica, and Rush to name a few. What lifts any one of these excellent bass riffs is its context and ability to set the mood or drive the emotion in the song it's being played.

"Dazed and confused" is a stripped down, electrified, down-tempo, blues-rock classic. It's dark, gritty, soulfull and the bassline drives the whole song like a lurking disaster. It's Iconic because of how much it does with so little. Compare what was played here to what John Paul Jones played. Were they really the same?

To add to that, being able to play it does not make you good either. its quite rare to get something you cannot actually play. for example I am a drummer, majority of Tool could be played with 2-3 years of learning drums if you have free time like a student or something. The point is, could you have written / composed something that good? probably not. It is more to do with the writing and finess and flare and style and feel than "can someone play this who is not a pro musician?"....

I touch on this without getting into genres in my recent comment. A few of the bass players I name were definitely influenced by bass players in those genres. John Taylor for example.

I was hoping Rush's "La Villa Strangiato, Zeppelin's "Lemon Song," and Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" had gotten a shout. Maybe Stevie's "Sir Duke" as well.

I would definitely argue that La Villa is not the song that shows Geddy's abilities best. It's an amazing song, and I definitely say it is one of the best Guitar lines though. I may have gone with Freewill though

Re: Entwistle. I'm not surprised 'My Generation' gets the nod most times as that solo was ground breaking at the time. But the best Entwistle bass line has to be 'The Real Me' from Quadrophenia.
