Seeker is afaik the one who discovered mega zips, so I'm glad he was so determined to aim for sub 6! A beautiful run. Thanks for your video, as even though I've been closely following the any% unrestricted category for weeks, there were a few details I didn't know about. Many, actually. :-)

What amazes me the most about the Elden Ring speedruns is just how fast they were able to find these crazy strategies, whereas other games that have been speedrun for years took way longer for massive glitches to be discovered. Wrong warping was obviously kind of given since ER is based on the same engine as Dark Souls, but I really don't know how anyone discovered zips, since it's such a frame-perfect thing and would be insane to accidentally pull off, especially considering that it's keyboard-and-mouse dependent in a game where the vast majority use only controller

Its not too crazy if you think about how popular elden ring is, and how much more in the spotlight speedrunning is within the past few years. So many people played this game and more people playing are aware of keeping track of gamebreaking bugs like that for speed run purposes, that if they did zip by accident theres such a high chance that it can be recreated. The keyboard and mouse thing though...probably cuts those odds by a lot lol

There are many infinitely more popular games amongst speedrunners, all of which are turned inside out and beoken into pieces by speedrunners looking for the new best strat. Even so, very few of those have even been broken to the extent that Elden Ring has. ER is so broken that alot of the absolutely wildest glitches are so simple that literally anyone can pick up a controller and almost immediately do most of it. Elden Ring is an absolutely broken game. There's no other reasoning. You very much have to let the game guide you, without getting too curious, because a tiny bit of inquisitive prodding and you can run into some kind of glitch or skip.

I was excited to watch the speedrunners solve Elden Ring, and I'm kinda disappointed. Not only did they absolutely DEMOLISH this game in under 2 months, it's just not a very fun speedrun to watch. I'm sure it's satisfying to nail these zips and lower your time, but there's nothing as interesting as the Sen's Fortress skip from DS1. Hoping a new category takes over that has a little more engagement with the game.

Tecnically speaking how can you make soeedruns of ER intresting tbh, like... Any% is super optimized. Glitchless, 100% and no-hit all bosses are also very standard-strategy guided. Challenge runs are usually just: seek op object, level it up and destroy previous areas, same pattern, different items to seek, borderline repetitive. Fewer bosses is already a good candidate, but the game defaults your route to try to kill the least amount of bosses.

Because if they altf4 the game during the credits they can use the load file IGT which rounds down. No idea why they use that instead of the livesplit time

@@EZScape The reason for allowing the load file IGT is generally so that it better matches with the rules for console runs, which must show their IGT at the end, and do not have access to LiveSplit. Technically, on PC you can choose to either record the load file IGT or the LiveSplit time as your final time. The reason runners choose to report their final time as the load screen IGT is pretty obvious, because it's a lower number, and runners want to have a lower number. This has generally been accepted by the souls community, because players want to alt-f4 at the end and save their exact file times for personal reasons, so checking the IGT at the end of the run anyway makes some sense.

an open world game would be really difficult to flag-check everything for progression, so once you arrive at point N, the game just have to assume you've already done whatever's required to get there, regardless of your actual progress (the only exception I can think of is Legend Arceus, because of how the dex system functions as a flag-check, you can't really skip anywhere)

They can't really patch this out - any% runners will just downpatch their game. Also yeah, the souls series is almost notorious for having shitty, unfun any% speedruns. DS1 isn't too bad, DS2 is a clusterfuck of parry walking, and DS3 has teardrop glitch ruining the run. Pretty sure the "popular" run for Elden Ring is going to be either any% restricted (a much more reasonable run that actually has combat etc) or All Remembrances, which is a ~2 hour run with TONS of actual gameplay.

It's not dumb at all. "Dead" categories usually are dead because no one runs them. Any% in most souls games are considered "dead" or at least not popular because of how unfun the runs are. Any% unrestricted in Elden Ring is a prime example of a run that is so unfun the category will likely be dead pretty soon. Kind of like how shitty Wind Waker Any% run got when barrier skip was discovered: nobody wants to do a speedrun of a category where after an HOUR of a run that's barely more than an hour, you have about a 3% chance on one glitch that allows you to finish the run - the other 97% of the time, it's an unavoidable reset. Elden Ring any% unrestricted isn't THAT bad, but it's a ~6 min run that involves doing a couple of wrong warps (they're pretty easy) and then a ton of either frame perfect zips... or double frame perfect megazips. There's pretty much nothing in the any% unrestricted run that even resembles actual Elden Ring gameplay. There's no combat and the glitches you use aren't fun or even very interesting. A 6 min run with a shitload of frame perfect zips is almost the worst kind of speedrun to do.

Can someone explain what is meant by "upgrading software" to do this more consistently? You're not modifying the game and the only other software that would be impactful is your OS. Maybe BIOS too? These are both unique enough that I wouldn't label them just software

There's a lot more than those which can interfere with a game. Theoretically any program can cause a side effect on any other simply though consuming shared resources (ie, CPU schedules, RAM usage, writing to disk, etc). You'd probably want to ensure drivers at the very least are at proper versions, though I think they show a doc at 9:50 with more specifics

With a pc there will always be some overhead from the OS and whatever it decides to do on its own (cough windows updates) but it can also include anything else you might have installed and have running in the background like an antivirus, discord, etc. And of course Steam. There's also your graphics drivers/software that can make a significant difference too.

Sometimes as soon as I beat a boss I try to help other players with it too. my build also needed extra levels to get somewhere, I'm running faith and intelligence and I had to get each close to 60 so I can use certain spells but then I had to pump magic, endurance and even health so I don't die in a few hits. I'm very much enjoying it, sometimes I just grind a single area for armor or smithing stones

To my knowledge the mechanics of zipping are exclusive to Elden Ring, but the term zip is speedrunning terminology that exists in other games. Even though the glitches give similar results and are named the same doesn’t mean they share the same properties. I just haven’t seen other zips that work like the ones in Elden Ring, but feel free to share which games that do if there are any.

That's a pretty common opinion actually, and that's the reason why it is banned in every category... except this one. Any% Unrestricted is just the complete, no holds barred, category where absolutely anything goes, no matter how bad the glitches and techniques are. Zips are probably the worse offender than alt-f4, because for some people on their computers, they can't even perform the technique consistently, even if they have frame perfect inputs. It's a somewhat unfair playing field, and almost more of a tech demo than a speedrun, showing just how little time you can spend in game to make the credits roll (and that's why I think it's so cool, personally).

All Bosses is just too long of a run to end up being that popular IMO. Even assuming they cut an hour or two out of it it's still gonna be like 7+ hours. Any% restricted and All Remembrances seem like the go-to runs. Any% restricted is way less jank, is ~30 min, and has actual combat while All Remembrances is currently ~2 hours with a TON of gameplay.

My comment from the 9 hour long LilAggy video "Elden Ring All Bosses Speedrun in 7:45:45" "For this type of speedrun and Elden Ring as a whole.. I feel like we need to scrap this in game time nonsense from DS1 and start using a standard real world timing; no pausing the timer for loading screens, or for door save quits (which take longer irl yet save time, go figure), and especially for loading screens after non-intentional deaths.. Let's not kid ourselves, this run is 8 hours and 57 minutes, and the last run was 11 hours and 3 minutes (claims 9 hours and 47 minutes). Even GTA 5 uses a real world timer that runs through ALL loading screens, and a 100% run in that is over 9 hours also, except they're not pausing the timer for loading times to say "woohoo! 6 hours! Anyway, I've been playing for 10 hours, I need to go now"." And the only replies are about "but everyone has different hardware, that isn't fair for some people!" as if speedrunners are using potato setups. Quote "You just said, let's disqualify people with weaker hardware." which is the worst take away humanly possible from my comment all about cutting ALL loading times being a cop out for player error which falsely reduces the time of the speedrun.

You don't know how a computer works are you? Someone can has the EXACT same set up and still have different loading times. Simply because sometimes read times from your SSD are faster and sometimes not. So no your idea is absolutely stupid and in very bad sports.
