When I worked in Alaska one wet summer, we all had caulk boots. Basically old school golf shoe spikes. Amazing grip on wet logs. So it makes sense that studded tires will grip wet wood better.

It's amazing how much traction those kinds of tires provide. Last winter the ice skating rink at the local park was really slick during a really cold week, but I was able to ride my bike on it without any worries. If I had tried walking, I would have fallen for sure.

I thought about getting spiked tires for years before finally getting a set last year. They are typically not cheap, but I found a set on sale. I should have gotten a pair years ago. Where I am in New England we really don't get much of a winter, but plenty of weeks with partially or fully iced up trails. You should try them on wet leaf covered or rooty trails, such a difference. Those schwalbes are nice, my 3.0 spiked tires are great but I shed spikes if I ride hard in mixed conditions. I raced an enduro with them and shed most of the studs on the rear tire! For the shoes, I am primarily a trail runner and adopted spiked orienteering shoes, mostly while running for inov-8 from the UK. I used to race obstacle races in them, made the wooden climbing obstacles pretty easy, until they were banned! Inov-8 and icebug make good spiked orienteering, winter running shoes. They do not have the same traction on pedals as bikes shoes, but if it is winter conditions and/or you want traction on wet logs and/or or hiking around (waterproof is nice for snow and colder days), they are the the way to go. I enjoy your natural trails footage, nice work!

I do have a set for a MTB to see if rooty trails are more ridable!

As a roadie, my experience has always been that studs are more slippery on bare tarmac than normal tyres would be. The compound is so much harder, even on good quality studded tyres because it is supposed to work in a much colder climate. Interesting to see it working in the forrest.

been using these tyres during winter. the grip on ice and snow is great. also i usually ride them with a bit less pressure than that. it seems to make the grip even better but i have never hopped logs so i have no idea if that is viable for log hopping.
@bigbird245115 күн бұрын
We could have indoor events that take trials to the tactile dimension. Indoor and TV ready. Each section has different textures in it. You pick your tire design and grip to master it. I say look into sandpaper treads. Or mud spikes with sand in the rubber itself.

Schwalbe ice spikers were some of the worst tires i ever fitted. They blew off the rim with tubes. I never had to fit additional rimtape for a tubed tire to make it stay on the rim before. Excellent on ice though.
