Now that's probably the original "Shock-Rocker"! He's got some great tunes of which this just one.

He had a big influence on Screamin' Lord Sutch, who then went on to influence many artists of the 1960's British rock scene.
@revjim1233 жыл бұрын
I was gonna say he was a big influence on folks like Kiss, Alice Cooper, Arthur Brown, Sutch

Howlin' Wolf was also an early shock-rocker. He used to get on all fours & run around howling like a wolf - on stage, & ou in the audience, up & down the aisles. Chuck Berry was theatrical, but not quite shocking.

In the mid-1960s I had the fortune to see the singer perform at the Dungeon Club in Nottingham. He appeared from a coffin on stage and launched into his act. An electrifying experience I have never forgotten.
@dsusan173 жыл бұрын
I think he was a great showman. I think this was a spoof of all of the voodoo movies. Fun pick and reaction. I have seen a longer video. What I heard I think he could have sung this song without the theatrics. However, it wouldn't have been as memorable.

Harri, the live performance on the Arsenio Hall show he uses the coffin! It is one of his best performances imo. He almost catches his piano on fire in that one, lol. He was quite the musician too, studied classical piano as a child and learned guitar in his 20s.
@karolyn86443 жыл бұрын
He also studied classical opera, lied about his age to join the army at 14, and was a boxing champ. Interesting guy with an interesting biography.
@74artgrrl2 жыл бұрын
This man was a piano prodigy by the age of 6. He also was a really great boxer and he declared he went off the war and was a prisoner of war for a time. I’m not sure that’s verified. He talked a big game. He also claims to have fathered over 75 children but others would say he fathered as many as 90 something kids. Eh… he’s sadly not known for his talent as much as he deserves. That’s what I know.

Angelina Jordan's cover of this song at the age of 9years is probably the most true to this original! There's some incredible people in this world of ours!
@albertphilippi43713 жыл бұрын
Even in our time, Jay Hawkins performance was shocking, how must it have been in the 50th or 60th. For a long time the version of CCR was my favorite but then a 9 year old girl, Angelina Jordan, came up with her own version and her own arrangement and killed it, Angelina's version is epic, absolutely awesome. 👏👏💯 *AJ* 💯👏👏

About a year or two ago, I discovered that Screaming Jay was the original singer of this song. Boy was I surprised. Who would have known that this could be sung so differently by Nina Simone.
@74artgrrl2 жыл бұрын
I’ve come to understand he was a self-defacing man to begin with. Jay Hawkins was adopted before he was 2. By 4 yrs old he learned piano and reading/writing music. He was a formidable boxer and claimed at one point to be a prisoner of war. There’s so much music he produced, it’s really sad we’ve mostly forgotten him.
@theotherdogknees2 жыл бұрын
If you look for covers, there're are scores. Bette Midler does a pretty good one. He was one of a kind. Right there at the start of Rock and Roll. When I played him years ago to my Mother, (she's 86 now), she told me that she used to listen to him in the late '50s. Mind you, she was considered a 'bad girl', (Air hostess, as they were known back then).

Screaming Jay was first and had so many great songs. He was a performer far before his time. He was a middle weight boxing champion. He was a prisoner of war and survived and returned home. He was raised by native Americans and was a piano prodigy.. his life was rich interesting and fallable as human beings are. But the gifts he left us cannot be ignored any longer.

As the story goes . and I do not know if this is true or not but.... Apparently the record producer was not happy with Jay's vocal on this song. It just wasn't the way he had it in mind for this song. So, he told Jay to go home and get drunk... and come in the next morning for anther try at recording it. What you hear on the original record is Jay singing hung over / still a bit drunk which gave the sound, the feeling he was after.
@paulmanley89972 жыл бұрын
Check out his constipation blues. Such a sense of humor. Read his amazing life story. Great stuff. They were so drunk when they laid this track that they forgot they had done it until the next morning. They had a big shock when they played it back.

You can appreciate 9 year old Angelina Jordan's rendition of this song even more now. She holds up a candle with this particular facial image. In her version she maintains a close semblance of this version and even her facial expressions are rather dark. Angelina is the only rendition that comes close to this original and there are many very different versions that I prefer to Jay Hawkins even tho he is the original.

Sorry, but this was a steaming pile of crap .. I like the song itself, but Screaming Jay totally loses it's sense of intense passion and depth of feeling with all that ridiculous pantomime-like theatrics and mucking around .. There's showmanship .. and then there's destroying a good song 👎
