For someone like me who is older, like Cory, and has always been a massive reader/world escaper/interested in writing stories, this is a really helpful video about how to get into this fascinating business. I've only been gaming full-on for a year (I mean basically 24/7) since I was made redundant from my job. I feel that I'm at a crossroad in my life and can use this time to make a massive change in direction in my career. I've always read a lot, and bought myself 'Morrowind' as I had the time (between job-hunting) to finally be able to play. Well, I completely fell in love with gaming and enjoy (like with books) that escapism, leaving my problems behind and being someone else in another world and having adventures. When I enter a game world it feels like coming home. I can't draw, or code, but to get into the narrative side of the industry would be fantastic; to create the questlines, dialogue and story arc. I'm going to do more research on this today and try very hard to stop being afraid to make that leap.

i already designed UI of softwares used in aerospace industry, built apps and websites. Im passionate about games, been a PC gamer for more than a decade, but I havent had an opportunity to enter the game industry. I once blew an interview when I said videogames have the best User Interface, turns out this particular corporate HR thinks videogames are vice and for kids, they are so clueless how big gaming industry is.

I went to college for game design. Bachelors degree is utterly useless and everyone who went to that school left unable to get a job in the game industry. School is not defunct, because for profit colleges are all scams. Because we didn't do coding at that school, we couldn't even pool what we knew as a group to make an indy studio after graduating. Good times. One girl we went to school with did get a job at Neverrealm, but that's because she didn't need to go to school. She was an outstanding artists before coming to school and could have gotten a job off the street for concept art work, so if you want to get in the industry, you better be the top .01% of good at something, otherwise, enjoy working retail while paying off $100,000 in debt.

You need to do computer sciences, because you can easily switch your area at any time. I got a job immediately after I left college with a bachelors degree.

so you don't recommend going to uni? cuz im still deciding on it. and I don't even know what job i want 😭

Gary Turbo What does learning c# have to do with anything? Before you enter computer sciences you should know at least some cpu oriented language, a scripting language that's high fidelity, and some infrastructure language for sites or data managing.

I'm interested in games and have a lot of ideas for games, but I just don't have the intense passion and ambition that's required to get into the gaming industry. It really sucks because I think I've got a lot to offer in terms of game concepts, characters and story development.

Question: if you have concepts for video games, but don't know how to code and aren't in the industry at all, what can you do make this game come to life?
@Aaron-kq1zo7 жыл бұрын
Commenting because I would like to know as well.
@dhruvb387 жыл бұрын
TimmacTR honestly not much unless you can find people who can actually realize that. Also remember that your concept might be awesome, but when you actually get working on it, something like 60 - 70% of that concept will not be feasible based on your budget (time and money)
@TiagoTiagoT7 жыл бұрын
I would guess either find passionate volunteers to start an amateur company with you; or enter some game design course of some sort.
@XBigTunaProductionsX4 жыл бұрын
TimmacTR pay programmers and artists good money to work for you. Or have really good friends that will do it for free/experience
@XBigTunaProductionsX4 жыл бұрын
TimmacTR most if not all of the big game designers know how to code and do art and a lot of other things that it takes to make a game. Because they know how to tell everyone what to do to make their vision a reality

Is python good to learn for gaming?
@madtrade7 жыл бұрын
learn C first to know the basics of pointers/memory/allocation and basic datatype. after C almost every imperative language get easier to learn another advantage to learn C first is you will know how to use a debugger. C binary translate way easier in assembly and it''s important to know how to debug! then you can learn C++ (very hard to master, lots of pitfalls, read everything made by herb sutter and alexandrescu! worship those books ) or C# (easier to learn / better IDE/workflow but you are 'stuck' with unity atm) then you will be able to use a true game engine like unity or unreal. at the same times take the game engine that you like and read every tutorials you can find. nobody will ask you to be a professional coder when you learn ! do not be afraid ! the passion of programming will never leave you :-) 25 years of coding behind me and i'm still loving it :-)

madtrade Dude, don't you just wake up one morning and ask yourself "How long will i keep doing this" or "Same thing, different day". I'm sorry but that's what I've been havig trouble with in my life right now. I am a senior at a highschool and i have my counselors constant bugging me with what am i going to study in college or what do i wanna be. i simply tell them that i have this problem with selecting my major. I dont want to keep on doing the exact same thing, even if i am passionate about it because i feel like i would just loose it. Maybe you don't have many interests in your life and that's why you dont worry? I apologize in advance if you take this in a offensive way which i completely don't mean to.
