Honestly one of the biggest ball drops of the education system as a whole. A Finance class that teaches you the basics of how credit/credit cards work, how to budget properly, how interest works, just all the basic points of finance in a persons day to day life, should be mandatory for every single high school student in the U.S. I would go so far as to say that a passing grade in the class should be a graduation requirement. and I would probably even say that a test on said basic finance should be a requirement to apply for college.

But some of it has to do with lifestyle, not just income & inflation. One car, frugal shopping, cook at home, less calories per meal, very little snacking, hand-me-down clothes, thrift shop furniture, small house or apartment, and cutting corners until you were able to save for that newer house, furniture, appliance or whatever - that was the norm, not the exception. Once in middle school during a civics class that did not go in depth on the topic, then a mathematics class that utilized the statements of credit card offers in order to challenge us to critically think on financial sustainability. Credit cards, scores were a trick to trap the general population into chronic debt. Then there are all the tv shows, showing people living in majestic homes, driving brand new cars, dining out all the time, spending, spending, spending, to appeal to the general population to want those things, and use credit cards to live beyond their means... Everyone wants a $30,000 celebrity pro chef kitchen, and then go out to eat 4 nights a week... This is all by design. Young generations can't even get out on their own these days, it's virtually impossible for the average person. $15 hr min wage, the ridiculously high cost for rent, cars, auto insurance, average cost of living... I wouldn't want to be a young person today trying to get out and build my own life.

Took me till 28 to understand that I need to save if I want a house, then finally left the city at 32, moved to rural tropics and bought my own place.. There's no takeaway here, and I don't drink as often because I'm not stressed out.. Just forget and ignore the credit card and take the sack on your credit score.. it's just a number on a screen that determines whether or not you're allowed to create MORE debt. Sometimes CC company will try and sue you but most times, judges throw it out. Even if they DO get to sue you, depending which state you're in, the state protects you from CC companies taking your home, vehicle, and home goods.. They'll then eventually sell off your debt to a debt collector and you COULD if you so desired to pay it - negotiate a payoff plan for anywhere between ~30-70% off the original debt

It always amazes me how people can’t do this math on their own. They need someone to tell them to stop spending money they don’t need to be.

If he didn't have the credit card debt, I could see his point. My friend calls it the JIT lifestyle.

The fact that people in our generation think "affording" and "getting" are the same thing shows a spectacular failure by the education system.

Keys of life, good savings account , don't pay interest. Mortgage that's ok. Awesome credit, but only use 20% available credit line. 17% plus to retirement

Money is just an arbitrary number these days, wages can go up but prices will go up with it.

I am lucky to have learned this lesson early and never racked up credit card debt. I use credit cards, but I always pay them off at the end of the month or use a no interest option. I have never paid interest on a card.

I think this is a massive problem with my generation and generations coming up. The whole “as long as I can eat and have fun and pay my bills, I’m good” is really really bad. I used to be the same way and financially ruined the past 12 years of my life which could have been DRASTICALLY different had I would have had some knowledge about money. Patience doesn’t exist for these kids anymore and fear of missing out has them spending every last dime they don’t have and getting into the vicious wheel of debt.

I don't know much about finances, but something I do know is that it's embarrassing to ask someone for a mountain dew. I just recently started building my credit score, got a credit card and a vehicle loan. It put me in a bit more debt than I want but I paid off half the vehicle right off the bat and I make enough to pay for food, housing, and my car loan with enough to put $600 back into my bank. Whenever I use my credit card, I may be paying it off too early, but I get it paid back often right after the purchase I made.
