I'm starting to somewhat get tired of the title can't let the intrusive thoughts win when you're conflating intrusive with impulsive. Hate to make a long post but I'm don't like it when people sort of make light of someone's mental issues in like a meme funny way or have a misunderstanding of the nature of how that works. "I let the intrusive thoughts win" is such an infuriating phrase to hear as someone with OCD. The term "intrusive thought" is inherently linked to obsessive compulsive disorder and these memes just perpetuate misunderstanding and make light of what we deal with. An intrusive thought is an unwanted, distressing thought that pops up out of nowhere. Sure everyone can get these thoughts but for OCD sufferers we can't let them go. They become obsessions, which cause compulsions, which cause our whole lives to deteriorate and some us take them because of it. Letting the thoughts "win" is the foundational fear that keeps OCD alive, when it's not actually a valid fear. These memes perpetuating that people actually act on intrusive thoughts is deeply harmful in many ways. "Impulsive thought" is a much better term for these memes. Because intrusive thoughts involve horrible things like molesting children, hanging yourself, murdering your family etc. and I have yet to see the memes used in that way.... I know society doesn't give a damn about the mentally ill as much as they pretend to and a post like this is being "too sensitive" but to anyone who uses this phrase and has enough heart to stop... it is very appreciated❤
