Stewart Copeland is still regarded as one of the great drummers in Rock, more than 4 decades after the debut album of The Police was launched. This song is taken from The Police's debut album and it features some typical elements of Stewart's highly dynamic style.

After three years Sina calls the police again! What a way to start Black Friday... THE SONG - "Can't Stand Losing You" was written and sung by Police bassist Sting (Gordon Sumner). It was recorded between January and June 1978 at Nigel Gray's Surrey Sound Studios along with the other songs for the band's debut album 'Outlandos d'Amour'. The album was recorded on a GBP 1500 budget provided by drummer Stewart Copeland's brother Miles. After hearing "Roxanne", Miles persuaded A&M Records to release it which they did on Apr 7, 1978 but it failed to chart. The label gave the band another chance with "Can't Stand Losing You" which was released for the first time on Aug 14, 1978. It was a hit, reaching #48 on the UK charts in late 1978 and A&M then released the 'Outlandos d'Amour' album on Nov 2, 1978. In the US, the album entered the Billboard 200 chart at #139 on Mar 3, 1979, peaked at #23 on May 5, and was last seen at #184 on Sep 1, 1979 with 27 weeks on the chart. Following the album release, both "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You" were reissued. "Can't Stand Losing You" didn't chart in the US but reached #2 in the UK."Roxanne" was a hit in the US, peaking at #32 of the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1979 and reached #12 in the UK. "Can't Stand Losing You" deals with teenage suicide, a touchy subject, and some were put off by the light treatment and the initial cover artwork that showed a hooded Stewart Copeland hanging himself. The BBC banned the song. According to Sting, it was due to the artwork but some writers say it was the morbid content. As is often the case, the ban enhanced the song's popularity and may have helped it become the band's first charting single. THE DRUMMER - Stewart Copeland was born in Alexandria, Virginia USA but spent much of his youth abroad in the Middle East and the UK. His father worked for the CIA and his mother was an archeologist. In his early teens, while in Lebanon, he started playing on his older brother's drums. His father, who had played jazz trumpet for Glenn Miller, arranged lessons with an Armenian who played in a hotel jazz band. When Stewart moved to the UK, he studied with Max Abrams. He told 'Modern Drummer', in Oct 1982, that he tuned his drum heads very tight, "The only thing I actually do myself is tune the heads, which I do rock hard all the way around. The entire drumset is about to pop; I have them as tight as they’ll go." He used an Imperial Star TAMA set with 9-ply rather than 6-ply shells to handle the additional tension. His playing style is unique as well. He's a very physical, hard-hitting drummer and uses a slightly altered traditional grip, often hitting the drum rims at the same time as the heads in a semi-rimshot for a percussive effect. Although his early influences included Middle-Eastern music and jazz, he was into Mitch Mitchell and Ginger Baker and drew inspiration from their playing in a trio. The freedom to improvise led to bringing jazz elements into rock playing like syncopation, complex fills and jazz rhythms on the cymbals. Stewart Copeland was inducted into the 'Modern Drummer' Hall of Fame in 2005, the 'Classic Drummer' Hall of Fame in 2013 and was ranked #10 in 'Rolling Stone's' "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time". Sina has two previous Police covers. Look for "Roxanne" (Aug 27, 2015) and "Message In A Bottle" (Dec 18, 2015) so she is familiar with Copeland's style. Rosanna, as usual, had a few questions - RO: Considering his various influences, what elements of Copeland's style did you want to emulate? SINA: I think Stewart Copeland added many reggae elements in this song. I copied what he did without thinking about the genre, but of course I also played the song in a reggae and rock style. RO: I believe you're using the butt-end of the left stick. Was that for more power or to emphasize the rim clicks? SINA: Yes, I use the butt-end of the left stick. That's because of the rim clicks. My dad isn't pleased when I play the loud snare hits too loud, because that makes it difficult to hear the more quiet ones. So I try to avoid doing these very loud snare hits like Copeland did. RO: Stewart often does complex rim click patterns. You do this at around 1:40. Is that something you've done before or just adapted from his playing for this song? SINA: We practised that in Drummer's Institute when we learned about Brazilian music, so it was not difficult for me to do it in this song. But I'm sure I would find rim click patterns in Police songs that I would have to practise a few minutes before I could play it. UNSOLICITED SHOPPING HINT - If you're doing your Black Friday shopping online, check out Sina's merch at girls-got-groove.com/shop/ Tell 'em Niki sent you... that really won't help but Niki insisted! :D

Hi Sina. Stewart Copeland was/is one of the great technical drummers of the 70's and 80's. His timing and precision is hard to copy, but I have to say, you absolutely nailed this tune. I've been playing drums since I was about 11yrs old, and let's just say that I don't need to work anymore, but there's no way that I would like to take this track on. Really, REALLY well done. I'm with you...A very fine job indeed !...But, something was lacking - a crispness, some energy - Because Copeland surely does get a workout. Actually, I was hoping that Sina WOULD attempt a Police tune - And, i got my wish. something different perhaps, the equipment, possibly ?? I listened carefully to the cymbal work - The high hat did not sound quite the same, nor did the other cymbals for that matter. Whether he used them on this song - I can't discern - But, he does use a set of smaller drums up top.

Apparently SC used to tune/tighten his drum heads/skins to within an inch of their lives. As far as I can see that only raises the pitch, but Sina's seemed fine to me. A fair amount of variation within a manufacturer as well as a given manufacturer's range.

Yes Sina... You definitely did it justice...... You are so good at every cover you undertake. Your father did super with video and mixing...... He added a portion where there are three different shots.. foot pedals, and two different angles of you drumming......very nice ...as well as the shot that got from normal view to close up. The seventies were definitely a fantastic era for music...... USA was still entangled in the Viet Nam conflict, Presudent Niixon forced to resign after the Watergate hotel breakin and cover up..... the decade was pretty much dominated by the disco scene and all the periphery it involved.... bell bottom pants,.men dressing in disco clothes, Studio 54 in new York city, changing morals, and then great rock and roll .............if you grew up in the 1970s..you would have been one of the great drummers with who knows which famous band....but definitely one of them. Did you ever consider letting the camera run for maybe a minute after song ends ..so that your minions could see how you wind down after a boffo performance.... maybe you talk to your Dad or just sit at your drums and meditate or get up and stretch or whatever....we would love to view it. Bye

Oh, after my recordings I usually just disappear. So all there's left to see would be an empty basement :) As for the 70s, there was the Disco stuff towards the end of the decade as far as I can tell, but literally all great Rock Bands were there too. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Queen...

Sina...can understand that when you done with a performance ..you just disappear. When you finish and carefully put down drumsticks and silence cymbal, you look completely "spent"... both physically and mentally. Maybe you go to garden with Jessy or go sit on the bench where you. Dad., and Milena were sitting? Just watched you doing the Police again.....you seem to do it so effortlessly and that every drumbeat you make is second nature..... quite astounding to watch !!!!!!!!bye for now

When Sina does a cover of a song one is compellingly drawn to details previously appreciated but consigned to a supporting role because the song as a whole was all that mattered (1976 I believe it was when I first heard this; A-Levels coming up and all!). That's why I love this young lady.

Absolute bewdy again. After some of the hard rock you've been putting out lately this one seems a little tame but it is still perfection. Love it when your covers are by yourself instead of collaborations but still all fantastic. So glad to be a subscriber. For those about to rock we salute YOU. Luv ya babe.... Alan from down under

Well young lady, I do believe if Mr. Copeland saw this he’d flip. Copeland always had the signature style but utilized amazing technique of which you seem to emulate effortlessly. As there are many “robots” out there that could play this song note for note, you obviously were in touch with the deeper vibe. Some of those fills are sharp enough to cut concrete. The relentless atomic kick/rim that rattled many a young skull. This song dates me. Yes, probably older than your dad. At that age I was crawling out of a punk induced feedback hangover. Don’t get me wrong, great times. This song brought an energy that was badly needed. An order to a chaotic mess of politically charged fast, good but sloppy noise. My point? You captured it. Maybe without knowing it. You are amazingly talented. Concentrate, stay focused and set goals. Chops like that? It’s your oyster. Peace

Sina is master at work here. I see and hear that Sina does the best job you can ask for this piece, technically as well as emotionally. And that’s not a little.Very immersive, immaculate and respectable cover. It’s not easy to realize how hard challenges she beat even as a teenager. To get it just right💯

Another excellent cover of what I've only really learned to appreciate very recently. Sina, thank you for helping hugely in that rediscovery of the music I'd almost forgotten, not being a huge fan at the time. The Police are far from the only example of this, which makes me very confused when videos get blocked - don't the labels and artists WANT the additional royalties? Are the artists even aware that they are being deprived of income by that kind of blocking?

Thanks Phil, I think it's not the artists' decision, it's decided by the record and publishing companies...

@@sina-drums If the artists own the copyright, they can insist on the final word - but only if they know it's going on. And labels do their best to stop them finding out (in the guise of "protecting them from harassment". That is why so much of what we hear on the radio thsse days, from the big "music" publishers, are commissioned works by employed composers and lyricists (meaning the copyright is owned by the label), performed by created "stars" (this week) who have little say in what they do - and no means of building any catalogue of works which they own the copyright on, and which will continue to provide for them in retirement. That is why so many are deliberately avoiding the trap of being signed now. Some are young artists like yourself, with good advisors like Mike, some have learned it from the inside, like Nita Strauss, who used Kickstarter to fund her original debut album (just like Motion Device). The record companies don't like anyone else having a slice of the pie though, and use their financial muscle to set the agenda. And they are prepared to pay liberally for control of music outlets like radio stations, channels like KZbin, and even governments (see the way licensing fees in the US changed recently to favour the huge corporations). If you want to see what has changed on KZbin over the last couple of years, follow the money trail.

That's all very true, since about 2 decades the music industry is doing a good job killing the music and killing itself. However, the artists and composers - especially in the old days - never owned the copyright (the publishing right) of their own recordings, unless they were independent. The copyright of all those iconic recordings I like to cover was always owned by the record labels/publishers. The copyright must not be confused with the writers' royalties. Royalties are not connected to the copyright.

The labels that do this have their heads up their asses, that's why. That's why they got killed in the internet era, and why they're going to get killed again in the blockchain era. The artists will win in the end (finally). Time to hand it over, suckers!

Sina- >"The copyright of all those iconic recordings I like to cover was always owned by the record labels/publishers. The copyright must not be confused with the writers' royalties."< Can we all just get real for a minute, please. Blocking a cover, in any way, is disgusting to me. It's like blocking free speech. It's a simple money grab, at the expense of the original artists and the covering artists. You know that's what it is, when sometimes it's ok with them, and sometimes it ain't. It has to be the same for everybody. It is also self-defeating. For what Sina and the other YourSoundTube artists do for ANY song they cover, the RHs and Pubs and original writers ought to get down on their knees and kiss her Convers. The idea is to keep the song in the culture, without trying to grab the share of the cover artists that are doing that work for them. Not smart.

New drummers, watch the way she doesn't rest a beat coming from the floor tom to the hi-hat on the second verse. That's very good form and is not done but a surprising number of drummers. So, if you want to sound good, make sure you don't skip a beat. Excellent technique here.

Syd Hamelin How does he get to the ride bell and back to the high hat on message in a bottle. I’ve never been able to play that.
@sydhamelin1265
@sydhamelin1265 5 жыл бұрын
@@ryanroose6124 One of the best drumming questions ever. The ride was overdubbed in the recording. You can actually hear the hi-hat, ride and snare all hit at the same time. He was asked about how it was played in the studio and he said the ride cymbal on the verse and some toms were recorded separately.
@sydhamelin1265
@sydhamelin1265 5 жыл бұрын
@@ryanroose6124 So, what he's playing is technically impossible (unless you have two sticks in one hand). BUT, you can fake it pretty convincingly. The first thing is to make sure your hi-hate and ride are both in a comfortable arc, so you're not stretching to reach either, cause it is a fast transition. So, the last verse, he's doing 16th notes on the hi-hat, with the ride and snare hitting on 2 and 4. I stick RLRL, but on the 2 and 4, I carry my left hand over to the snare, and my right hand over to the ride. So it looks like 1-R E-rest &-R A-L 2-Right on Ride, Left on Hi-hat E-rest &-R A-L On the recording, he rests the hi-hat after the snare hit, so it lines up closely.
