Styx And Stones Can Break Your Sticks - So Always Carry Spares :D "Come Sail Away", as performed by American prog-rock / arena-rock band Styx, was written by Dennis DeYoung - the band's main songwriter and vocalist. It's the fourth song on their seventh studio album 'The Grand Illusion' which was recorded at Paragon Recording Studion in Chicago in 1977. The album was released on July 7, 1977 and "Come Sail Away" was the first single released. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #89 on Sept 24, 1977 and peaked at #8 on Jan 28, 1978. 'The Grand Illusion' peaked at#6 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was a breakout hit for the band and eventually was certified trile platinum. Although Styx had a devoted fanbase, they were tired of being considered a second tier act, always opening for bands like Foghat, Rush, Aerosmith, etc. DeYoung used his frustration as inspiration for the lyrics. Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw and promo man Jim Cahill took a different approach to secure radio play. According to SongFacts- "This being the '70s, radio stations played a big role in promoting songs, and program directors could often be swayed with gifts of money and drugs. Payola, was of course, illegal, but that didn't stop Shaw and Cahill from traveling to many of the stations with bags of cocaine in an effort to get more airplay for this song. The tactic worked; Cahill explained on 'Styx Behind The Music' that program directors were like penguins, since they'd follow you around if you had "snow"" Some of the lyrics are a bit "out there". SongFacts states - "The last part of this song where the angels/aliens come to visit can be seen as an allusion to the Bible verse of Ezekiel chapter 1:1-28 where a large wheel/cloud (depending on text) appears to Ezekiel and gives him instructions from God. Some people believe the figure Ezekiel saw was not a messenger sent from God but an alien space craft or a time machine from the future." The movie 'Star Wars' was released a little over a month before "The Grand Illusion". It could just be the era. You decide :D Tommy Shaw - “Much of The Grand Illusion album was to do with the disillusionment of finding out that the things we had all dreamed about weren’t quite what they were cut out to be.”

PART TWO Original Styx drummer, John Panozzo, had a very physical style. Unfortunately, he died early on July 16, 1996 at the age of 47. Years of heavy drinking resulted in cirrhosis of the liver and he succumbed to gastrointestinal bleeding. He was replaced by Todd Sucherman who said - "I adored John. I loved his work, and his craft. I’m a different human being than John Panozzo was, as would any drummer who would be in this band. It’s impossible to play it exactly like that other person. It’s one thing to be able to play C, B flat, or A. With something as organic as drumming, which is as natural as a human heartbeat, it’s going to be a different thing. All I can do is try to make it feel as good as I can, and honor John’s legacy while adding my own stamp to the music." Rosanna had a question for Sina - "This was an intense workout - lots of rolls and fills. How hard was it to nail the Panozzo style? SINA - "It was quite a challenge to learn this song. I wanted to do the first fills note for note, so I transcribed the passage and learned it by heart. The middle part is not that difficult, but in the end I felt a bit like I was doing a Who cover. But I think that's just my interpretation of the ending, it's not that Moony in the original recording." My husband, who knew a drummer or two back when he played bass two decades ago, was so impressed by Sina's performance he had a couple of questions too - "Do you ever turn the sticks around and play with the butt end for more volume?" SINA - "I sometimes turn the left stick for rimclicks. When there isn't enough time to turn it again until it changes to the usual backbeat, I use the butt end. But I usually don't do this to increase the volume." "Have you ever broken a stick, or a head, or broken a pedal or do you have some other "favorite" drummer's horror story?" SINA - "Oh, I broke many sticks!! I never broke a drumhead or pedal, though. Once, a bass drum beater broke in the middle of a song, but I think that wasn't really my fault. There must have been a manufacturing defect. This was many years ago during practice at home. On one of my very first gigs when I was maybe 12 years old, I lost a stick and later found out that same stick flew all over the stage and hit the bass player. That's my worst story I think." And I think that will have to do for now! Back next week - same time, same channel! ;D

@@julietp.5877 thank you for another great write up, you always do a great job on the write up and giving info. For Sina, that sounds like me trying to play golf, the golf ball would go every place but where it was suppose, 1 time, there were like 5 or 6 guys, standing in a circle, the golf ball dropped in between them.

Juliet! You're killin' it again, wow!! So much great background. I especially like the part; "program directors were like penguins, since they'd follow you around if you had "snow"" Another dirty little secret about the industry. What's the modern substitute, I wonder? Maybe just cash. I noticed that about the reversed drumstick for rimclicks. Under Sina's tutelage I'm noticing quite a lot more than ever before. Sort of dragging me kicking and screaming (with a smile on my face) into better drumming knowledge. And those fills, ah yes. Sina's ability to memorize for this and other pieces is just amazing! Thanks Ro! Great contribution, as always!!

Caustic SodaPop And how about her muscle twitch? Have you seen anything like it before? As far as the song goes, I think she put a little Keith Moon improv into it. I remember hearing her say that she likes to do that with some songs.

Such a treat! While I don't play out, I play classic paino by ear for fun. I have an audiographic memory (hear a song, recording, someone doing a stand up comedy act, and it plays back in my head exactly like it was recorded, when I want to play it back again, for years, with all details). I certainly still play this song a lot! As I watch and listen to Sina play, I am comparing it to the original in real time in my head. I absolutely loved it! The precision of every roll, cymbal hit, and timing is pretty much indecernible from the original - absolutely she's at the professional level... and I can see she's having fun. It doesn't get any better than this! Wow.

I entered "basic drum lessons" in the search feature and watched three lessons by three different people. At the end of number three, a choice of selections that came up with Sina playing some of the 1970s tunes I used to groove on back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Next thing you know, nearly three hours went by as I went from one tune to the other! This sixtysomething fuddy always regretted not learning the drums in my younger days; I'm glad Sina didn't make my mistake. I have subscribed and I'll be back for more.

This song helped me "Sail Away" all the way back to my high school and early college days. Thank you so much for selecting and playing this song as I needed a "pick me up". Truly, it did! Your dad's awesome production capability and your absolute beautiful and graceful drumming week after week leaves me virtually awestruck - every time. This masterpiece is no exception! I look forward each Friday at 10:00 am to enjoying your masterful work! I want you to know your music, poise and professionalism inspires me to do the best at what I do because you always do the best you can do! It's appreciated! Keep the faith and stay safe.

I don't think anyone ever thought a woman could not be a drummer, many drummers on KZbin are women, extremely fast hands. I'm just glad to see there's a Young generation that enjoys the music of the '70s and '80s and creating their own sound very similar. Keep rocking

I’ve played music since high school (86’) and was thrilled when the first of my children asked to play music too. ESPECIALLY thrilled when he asked to teach him “my music”....Sam Cooke, Styx, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Ready For The World etc With him, and when I see young crushers like this young woman, it STILL brings welled up tears when they are, not out interested in... but playing my era music. Love to see these young up and comers sharing their talent. And, I try to support them ANY chance I can. Keep Rocking, SINA🤘🏾 Aloha!🤙🏾

You Sina have shown many of us old timers what we should have been and you've practically have picked our classics and are becoming master of tempo. It is one of the most important role of the group (band members) to keep tempo and should be important to all musicians: which helps give a person more confidence. Just as some have said keep your heart true to the beat and to heck with partners, drugs, alcohol but make it if possible, to earn and get a solid education in your time off.

Hi Sina, First of all I have to confess that most of the songs you cover that came from the early 70's through the 80's were songs that I only knew the melody and lyrics to but putting a name of the group or band that preformed them was always a mystery to me. It could have been the fact that at the time I had a little boy (born 1971) to bring up and one on the way (born 1974) so most of my attention to music anyway was just listening to the melody and lyrics never really paying any attention to who composed or wrote it or performed it. This routine went on until my 3rd and 4th child (another boy) (1976) and finally a Girl who was born in 1979. So now I'm entering the 80's and my interest in music returned to a more normal state (content and group or band) with a few exceptions. Enough about that! When they (OUR KIDS) finally attained ages where they didn't need our supervision quite so much the wife and I were able to and EAGER to go to more concerts and live performances of the popular bands at the time (late 80's into the 90's) I don't have any real problems remembering them. That bring us to You and the early rock bands that you cover (so well I might add)!!! I finally get the names of all those (BANDS & GROUPS) that inspired my love for Rock music and the circumstances that led them to write the music that they did!!! YOU, SWEETHEART YOU provided the who - the when - the why as to what led them to create the beautiful music that YOU and YOUR DAD and Collaborators along with countless other contributors recreate with such perfection and attention to detail!!! "STYX" was and will forever be just a very few of the bands from that era that I loved and bring back wonderful and lost memories that I truly treasure!! I will also treasure all the new memories I am creating while listening and watching your Covers, Collaborations and Originals!! You my dear have rescued an old man who was in a very seemingly unescapable abyss!! THANK YOU!!! YOUR MY HERO AS FAR AS MUSIC GOES!!!!

I’m really going through a lot w/the Hubby- very overwhelmed- and when I come here I gain some calm and peace... between Sina’s expert treatment of the songs of our youth and knowing you’re here too, with Jeff as well... I feel the support of prayers. Thank you Sir for supporting a stranger in this big world, feels a little smaller when I can carve out a few moments for myself on Sina’s channel🙏❤️🌴

Sina's channel and her magic of bringing back happy memories (thru the songs) and then getting to know both Sina and Mike on a somewhat personal level (as such that one can get thru email and sending Christmas Cards), this is such a friendly and family oriented channel like no other. As I've said, I've never commented on a KZbin channel before Sina's. And yes, I've made virtual friends with some folks here, you and Jeff being the closest. This is a special place. This is probably my favorite cover( but I like me all). April 1st 1981 Styz came to Indianapolis, In to play at market square arena at which time I was fortunate enough to be one of the limo drivers for the band. Drove for many bands but it seemed like Styx was ahead of there time in there stage presence and showmanship, I was hooked they became my favorite concert, and Loverboy was the most fun, thanks to you Sina for bringing back fun memories. Carry on.
