Amazing thing about service dogs is that they will actually alert for other people. They work for who ever they are attached to. My medical alert service dog was passed around at my wedding so my new husband and I could enjoy ourselves and he told a bridesmaid that she had low blood pressure and needed to do something about it before he sat on her to fix it, and told my grandma that she was about to have a panic attack from the noise and people and she was able to take her medicine in time.

If this happened in real life first, you don’t need to prove it second, it’s illegal to remove medical aid devices, and you can get fined a lot of money and or face jail time
@iglidor7 күн бұрын
Sure, but at the same time atypical medical aid devices come with some certification that you (at least where I live) are required to carry with you. Because for example some people require litteral bike as medical aid. But for example a bus driver has no way to determine if he is allowed to take that bike onboard or not unless you prove it to him. Is the person lying to him to take a bike onto bus just for his convenience? Or does he really need it because of some condition of his legs? You have no way to tell just on sight. Same with assistant dogs. They are required to have a vest on them with designation so that everyone understand that this is not normal dog, and that it has special training (which is usefull on its own because if such dog with vest is trying to get your attention, you understand that he is not simply curious or playfull but that something actualy happened). Can someone fake this? Sure, but at that point they are forced to make way too much effort just to break minor law that people simly do not do it out of lazines.

If only you knew how hard I have to work to keep myself from talking much when I visit my in-laws. It fucking sucks and I get so depressed. I don’t feel, and will NEVER feel understood. I will NEVER feel comfortable around other people, including my partner who is sick of the burden I am to him (and he has high blood pressure, so I think it’s probably better if we separate so I don’t end up killing him from the stress I add to his already tall pile of stressful things). We have a 19 month old daughter and as much as I want her to live a happy life, it won’t be happy, or healthy for her to see her father having a meltdown and throwing all the anger and hate he feels towards me by being verbally aggressive, physically damaging stuff in our house, and threatening to hurt himself (which he would not say unless his mental health was in an extremely bad state). It’s all my fault. I don’t want anyone to suffer, although I don’t think it’s acceptable to verbally abuse me because I’m hard to deal with because I have a hard time concentrating, getting things done, getting emotional (although I don’t take it out on others), having moments of confusion and clumsiness, and saying things I don’t realize are rude or insulting… and manic episodes, which I tend to get with psychosis, are a whole other issue…. I still get verbal aggression and occasionally a bit of physical aggression as well. I can’t do this anymore. Sorry for ranting. This is something I always found to be frustrating! Service animals do not require a license, not required to wear a vest or ID, and can be independently trained by the owner so long as they are able to perform the task needed. Add to this frustration, the misconceptions of emotional support animals and service animals. I've seen places online that advertise selling documentation to "take your pet anywhere" with ESA registration. ESA are not afforded the same protections under ADA and typically only really apply to renting situations. Also one can get a note from their doctor for nothing if they really need it.

I used to work at an indoor dog park and a retired service dog used to come to the daycare or just to socialize and he would always alert for me and my manager whenever we'd get anxious. I'd just be standing there talking to someone, not realize my social battery for the conversation was dwindling then I'd get overstimulated and uncomfortable (not visually noticeable) and he'd come up and tap my hand until I followed him and sat down alone. Sometimes he'd lay on my lap. 😭 Made me realize a service dog for my autism and anxiety would actually be kinda nice 😅

My shop’s manager brings her dog. He starts following me around when my blood pressure drops, I am having bad anxiety, or even a headache. He’s a border collie and he does this thing where your hand can be in an arm rest or at your side and he flips it perfectly with his nose to make your hand land in his head. I love Rex. My big poodle won’t leave my side when I’m in pain (severe back injury recently and 3 years ago and 10 years ago), have a migraine, or am really anxious and/or depressed. If I get light headed and end up in the floor or fall (bc of scoliosis I can literally lose my balance just standing and fall 🤣 it’s actually hilarious. And dangerous) he scoots his head and upper body under my chest and slowly stands to get me to my knees. He even follows me to the bathroom and figured out how to slide the pocket door open to check on me ☠️ he has no training. Yet.

There is no such thing as legal papers to prove your dog is a service dog. Per the ADA, once she informed them he was a service dog, all they were legally allowed to ask was what tasks he is trained to perform. They failed spectacularly.

I work in security at an University, the most I do is ask if the dog is a service animal, and ask them to leave if they confirm the dog is not a service animal. I had worked at a grocery, doing security, and a 'service' dog was being a menace, growling at people, fighting against its leash to get food off of a shelf. I just ended up calling my supervisor over to handle it, that person ended up getting banned from the store and escorted out, with her dog, by the police. Thank God my supervisor handle it, because he got called into court because the lady was trying to sue the store and the cops. Didn't go the way she wanted, as her only proof of her dog being a service animal, was the vest from Amazon.

I know it's just a show. But service animals are not regulated in that manner. ADA does not require a license, vest, etc. You can obtain these items to help identify a service animal. But they do not "make" a service animal. Additionally, an emotional support animal is NOT a service animal. Emotional support animals can lower or waive pet friendly fees at apartment complexes, townhouses, other rental properties. However, no fee can be charged for a service animal. Can still be charged for damages done by the service animal. I won't say never yet, I imagine damages incurred from a service animal is quite rare. As service animals are exceptionally well trained.

There absolutely needs to be some form of certification for service animals. While I love animals more than humans and fully support the presence of service animals in all spaces, the system is being abused. Nowadays, it seems like everyone claims to have an emotional support animal, and it’s getting out of hand. I’ve witnessed so-called “service animals” barking excessively, fighting with properly trained service animals, and even urinating in public spaces. A straightforward solution could be a simple tag on the collar, indicating that the animal has undergone proper training or that the owner has a legitimate prescription for a service animal. And let’s be realistic-there’s no need for service pigs, llamas, or horses on planes. Some of these claims are just absurd and undermine the legitimacy of real service animals. Let’s keep it simple and effective.

ESAs do not have public access. If someone claims their dog is an ESA, businesses are allowed to refuse them public access. The problem is that so many companies are terrified of suits that they don't actually let employees follow the law
@omninerd42762 күн бұрын
There isn't because it would be cost prohibitive for one thing. For another each animal is trained based on the needs of the individual they service. The final reason there isn't is because of patient privacy rights. You do not have the right to that information. You just don't. And they have every right to go where they want with their service animal. You can not turn them away anymore then you can turn away someone with a prosthetic or require someone in a wheelchair provided proof to you that they need it. It isn't your business.

Had somthing kinda like this happen to my grandmother she a type 3 diabetic 87 years old. And she has a 5 year old service husky. Its amazing how quickly he reacts somtimes even smelling whenever her blood sugar is incredibly low. Doctors even stated there has been countless times where she couldve lost her life. But her dog literally saved her. She also has pens for allergic reactions and i remember her peanut allergy went out of control one Thanksgiving her dog jabbed her thigh with an epi pen before any of us realized. He does not have thumbs but he used his jaw and with the right amount of pressure her best friend was saved again. I swear dogs alone are something else. But when they are trained to save a life. Its a different story.

Unfortunately a lot of people know service dogs are important, but a lot of people lie about their dog being a service dog and even print fake certificates for their dogs just to take them into public. Those fake “service dogs” are really ESA’s and should be left at home as they are untrained. Due to the rise of people bringing ESA’s into public it causes distrust in people who actually have real service dogs. How are people supposed to know whether or not a dog is a service dog when there is no real proof? They don’t hand out real certificates that can prove your dog isn’t a fake, but instead you just have to blindly trust that a person you don’t know isn’t lying about their dog being an actual service dog.

@violetskies147 күн бұрын
The only questions you can ask about a service dog is "is this a service dog?" and "what tasks is it trained to do?" It's none of your business if the person looks disabled or not, many of the most serious reasons for needing a service dog can be invisible disabilities such as epilepsy, diabetes, heart conditions, and conditions that cause fainting and collapse. A service dog for someone with conditions such as those allows someone to live a much more normal life because they know their dog will alert them in time allow them to react and keep safe should an incident occur. You should never assume that just because someone "looks normal" that they don't need a service dog. The only time you should question a service dog is when they are reactive and disruptive.

@spaceycasey22265 күн бұрын
That is really horrible, but that being said part of having a service dog is being able to control them and if your dog is going nuts and it’s not because of a medical alert, then your dog comes off as not properly trained for their job. A service dog is supposed to be trained to not make a commotion unless they’re alerting so if that’s what happened in your dog was making a commotion and there was nothing wrong. That is why they asked for your dog to be removed. Which I’m not saying that’s OK and I’m not trying to defend them. I’m just trying to give another perspective on the situation. Either way they shouldn’t be doing that and it is illegal to remove a service dog, even if they are barking, even if they are being disruptive if they are a service dog, you cannot remove them from the premises
