@@slubbergully9231 Yeah but anything that exists is physical plainly-speaking. All you have to do to know that helium is physical is to inhale from a helium balloon; if it wasn't physical, it wouldn't cause your lungs to expand.

Even if Dan meant 'Helium is intangible', he would still be wrong. 'Helium voice' works because sound (air vibrating) travels slower through our atmosphere (oxygen, carbon dioxide and other gases mixed in) than when you fill your mouth with Helium.

Nah. 'Helium' is an abstract description of a physical state of affairs. It's an empirical concept, logically distinct from the things-in-themselves.

@@GasparGa Dan was a sports coach first. He's the gym teacher who also teaches science because schools in America are underfunded hellholes. Hell, I think I even remember Dan saying he would read the chapter he was gonna be teaching the night before and that was his prep.

Feels like this could be easily resolved if you tell Dan about how heavy things feel in the hands, speak in his language, Y'know? Just legitimately take two things anywhere in his household like an actual heavy tool(Hammer, etc.) then a bundle of clothes compressed up into the same size. Weigh them, he cannot deny the numbers.

I think I see where Dan is coming from. Helium and any gas for that matter is a very ephemeral material easily dispersed by the air all around us that we can't "grab" with our hands. I think it's just a case of not using the correct word.

Holy fuck i finally understand what dan is trying to say: helium does not have a constant density, filling a milk jug with helium could mean one helium atom and a vacuum. So this analogy can only work with objects of defined volume. I dont know what he means by helium isnt matter but i understand why he wont put it in a milk jug
