for me personally, as long as Samsung keeps developing DEX, laptops are dead to me, as long as I have a lapdock (such as the Nexdock Touch). Tablets mostly too, although I do wish the nexdock could flip into a tablet mode (which the next Nexdock product is going to be able to do). Webapps are well optimized these days, most apps deal with desktop mode just fine, a DEX-enabled phone is usually more powerful than you'll ever need for general use, and with the existence of cloud gaming, there's almost no need to actually pay 1000+ for a decent laptop when you already have a flagship phone and a lapdock to connect it to.

Samsung browser has been a game-changer in terms of my tablet experience.. I'm using the galaxy tab s6 (for almost 2 years now) and the option to load websites on their desktop version "BY DEFAULT" (youtube, facebook, gmail, google calendar etc) is a breath of fresh air. Chrome mobile browser does it too but you have to enable the desktop version per tab which is kind of annoying especially for those websites where you want a specific link to open in the background/in a new window. I think the desktop version should be a standard in the tablet category. I find it counterproductive to load the mobile version of a site on a relatively bigger screen such as tablets/ipads when the desktop version is more appropriate and makes more sense. Great video! I also like the emphasis on using tablets in coffee shops and when traveling.

Thank you for this comparison, Mike. I work in telecommunications as a consultant and trainer. I have been toying with the idea of switching to a premium tablet, but I think you were quite accurate in your description of the 'use' of the individual devices. I am working primarily remotely these days and my laptop is sufficient for conducting Webex and Zoom meetings, as I can attach a better external microphone and camera to it. I then can do my invoicing and summary of the training sessions for my project manager. Once the work day is done, I don't want to have to disconnect the periphery devices from my 2-in-1 Laptop, Using a tablet to look over the schedules and check documents is easy and I can immediately go to online shopping or streaming Netflix, Hulu, or KZbin. Thank you for your comprehensive reviews. Happy New Year!

Near the end of the video he said you couldn't do really complex video editing on this. Not sure if that affects you but others working remotely sometimes need the ability to edit videos. If you are a trainer and consultant you might need some editing ability as some of your work is about looking good and presentation. Meaning you might sometimes want to change how a video segment looks(?) Will that affect you? But could someone do like simple videos like for youtube without a lot of editing with these and budget tablet models? Does someone absolutely have to have a non-budget model to function this way or can they can by with cheaper? ... For @kjg1225nyc a lot of people think in the future a lot of people will be doing Zoom meeting stuff for work and other things. I've been hearing more people will do and are doing zoom for business. You could also see if some of the freeware office programs work on your device too to see if that will save you money instead of having to buy the premium $ stuff. If I had more experience I'd be able to comment more.

Majority of people who have Windows laptops use it for emails, Office 365 productivity, file management and browsing. The issue with tablets is that Office 365 is limited as you get the mobile version as well as you cannot open multiple files of Excel, Word or PowerPoint at once. File management could be improved as well (though it's quite functional with Dex). Hmm it's certainly worth considering. Depending on how intense your microsoft work gets, I think a tablet might be a fantastic option for you. Perhaps order one from a place that allows returns and give it a test drive?

"Android's not meant to be moving files around." The conclusion is almost as strange as how you arrived at it. If you don't like the layout offered by your default file manager there's dozens more to choose from. Also while Premier Pro doesn't exist for obvious reasons, there are several powerful video editing options.

I don't know if I can agree with you. I'd say, that even Chromebooks are more optimised for computer-like use, than Android Tablets and you can also have Android apps installed there with same amount of desktop optimisation as on tablets, but you can also install Linux apps and a lot of them are awesome. I guess if you wanna have tablet/computer hybrid, iPad or Windows tablets are great for only computer solution, however, if you're buying it as a secondary device it doesn't really matter, because you can do more advanced things on your primary PC
@lauriealach10723 жыл бұрын
Mike is not reviewing Android tablets as laptop replacements, he is specifically looking at the suitabilty of a one Android tablet, namely the Galaxy Tab S7. The difference boils down to a killer feature whch your Chromebook, even with its Android apps, just cannot compete with. This killer feature is what makes the current Galaxy premiums what they are, and it is called the S-pen. It's that little magical stick perfected by Samsung in 2011, and which other companies have tried to mimic since. Until you take the time to experience the current S-pen and all its intricacies and capabilities, you just will fail to comprehend why people are so enamoured with the Galaxy Tab S7 and 7+. The other killer feature that propel the Galaxy premium tablets to the top, has already been discussed by Mike O'Brien. That is Dex.

The Samsung Browser is Chrome with a Sumsung twist for those of you that didn't know. Of course it's gonna work better on a Samsung device. It's optimized to do so. Anyway, I've never been a fan of laptops, I'm more of a desktop user. However, I've become accustumed to using tablets and chromebooks. I own both and I use both. Like Mike has said the gap between both laptops and tablets is closing. I honestly think that chromebooks is the happy medium. With chromebooks becoming more powerful each year and more capable, tablets will most likely phase out. Google has stated many times that they are done with the tablet thing. They don't even bother to better optimize the apps on tablets, so they can run better. Their focus is more on mobile and chromeOS. They even made chromeOS capable of running AndroidOS and from what I hear that's only the begining. As most of us know, Google is no stranger to killing the things they create.

yeah I think chromebooks are better than s tablets

i think for file management , the 3rd party apps like FX files manager or files manager+ or something like that is good enough as a replacement. However, it would be nice that the My Files app would have say, a desktop mode or tablet mode that works similar to how a Windows/MacOS file management system would work. I tend to never use My Files on mine as i have a 3rd party one. Feels like the samsung one is ok on the Phone but for me, it overlaps on Dex mode. not sure if it's due to that or not but i find myself aiming for other file management apps due to that. Anyway, i feel tablets are close to what the desktop can bring but it also depends on what kind of user you are, if you are doing heavy editing, then get a damn good laptop, if you're mainly browser heavy, then the tablet will do, unless it has dependencies such as say, lotus notes browser add-on. yes, oddly specific but i ran through some issues in regards to work with that. I think the future of tablets or the potential of it, isn't fully realized yet but i feel in the next couple of years, if it's more than just iPad and Samsung tablets, perhaps, we can see developers building for these tablets. Hell, Maybe Windows will give us something to look forward to too.

It works for me since I'm 100% invested in Google's ecosystem and only use Google Workspace Cloud apps (Google apps) and I'm able to be productive in a meaningful way and never skip a beat as well as plug in accessories such as a mouse, keyboard, and extra monitor (of my choice). I can also move my files around anywhere I'd like. Definitely works for me and my productivity level is not novice, either.

I've watched a lot of these videos (comparing laptops to tablets etc), and I must say, I sure would like to see one done from a different perspective. You all break it down the same way, from the point of view of somebody who... 1. Uses a computer in a professional capacity. 2. Creates content. 3. Travels a lot. Not that this is bad or wrong, I mean, you are who you are, and you have to make this analysis based on your own experiences. But it WOULD be nice to see somebody analyze this question from a different point of view for once.

It boils down to the individual on the work type and the goal they are trying to achieve in general. If the person is relatively, as what Mike had pointed out, going to spend the entire day on Final Cut Pro cutting and editing videos, then transitioning from a laptop to a tablet seems not the cup of tea for that type of guy. A tablet is generally for a quick everyday use over the items one needs to have a quick overview on.

I used the Tab S8 for a time and at the beginning I was convinced it could replace my laptop. But honestly for real work or when I just wanted to get something done I always switched back to my windows laptop. Chrome extensions like workona are a big productivity boost and having full office versions is quite good too. Personally i don't get why Google isn't concentrating on their chromeOS. I just tried the Lenovo Duet 5 and it can't output 4k properly but instead of this it could be a real laptop replacement.

Just did this same thing (not exclusively using a tablet but purchasing one and use a windows PC). I wanted another display to watch KZbin TV while playing games on my desktop PC. I bought a Lenovo Duet Chromebook. As a Windows user that uses my computer to play the latest games, record using Ableton Live, browse the web and design I thought I would never use a Chromebook in my life but I am happy to say it is a pretty awesome device. I don't see the value in buying a laptop besides portability because you are paying an insane premium on hardware that similar hardware would be priced a lot lower on a desktop PC. Chrome OS has either has come a long way or has quietly been great (as long as you are OK with Google with your data that is). Highly recommend the Lenovo Duet for it's value.

I have an iPad Pro and, even with a keyboard and mouse, certain basic tasks can be slower and more annoying in general. Like Keyboard shortcuts often being more limited. Then there's also the fact that a lot of tablet versions of apps still lack a lot of desktop functionality and are usually saddled with a very unintuitive and inefficient UI for mouse use.

Another benefit I got is that I dont have to carry so much weight on my backpack, I even can carry my tablet with just a small waist bag or pouch, but I do still have desktop computer at my house if I have to use some app that only run on windows :)
