Can Tesla Enhanced Autopilot Drive Better Than a Human?

I took my Tesla Model 3 for a drive using Enhanced Autopilot, and documented how it performed. The key purpose was to leverage Navigate on Autopilot and Auto Lane Change to see how it compares to a human driver. Does it perform better than a human? Well I guess that really depends on the driver.
This specific Enhanced Autopilot drive occurred on my way to work one very sunny morning. Obviously all highway driving, as that's where Navigate on Autopilot and Auto Lane Change works. I tried to give some commentary during the drive to give you a perspective on how it does in various traffic conditions. In my case, this drive occurred during rush hour traffic on my daily commute.

Being a Metro Detroiter it is amazing how many Tesla navigation videos I recognize the routes. I just added the FSD subscription and hope to be were you are with the trust factor in a week or two.

I've noticed the same. I wouldn't say my trust factor is super high, especially with FSD on city streets. That makes me nervous as all heck. I have gotten pretty comfortable with EAP and FSD on the highway, and FSD seems to be doing really well with those highway drives. Pro Tip: Set your autopilot settings to Chill. FSD seems to handle a lot better on the highway with that, and it makes the drive so much more enjoyable!

Audio was fine for me. My fiance and I just purchased a 2018 M3 LR with enhanced autopilot. We should be picking up the car soon.

@@hayden8693 yep I think so, some cars that are 20,000 have self park, so I don’t see why that shouldn’t be in the main auto pilot.

@@joshwashedup2152 I’ve had many cars with self park and I used that feature 2 or 3 times. They are usually pretty sketchy lol I just park myself it’s so easy.

That is what I also did- I only have basic auto pilot. I don't get on the freeways that much so buying EAP for lane change capabilities is not worth it for me.

Is this done with the Tesla vision only? And what type of warning do you get if it's not safe to change lanes. (car in blindspot)

Tesla vision only, my M3 doesn't have the sensors. I've got my EAP settings configured so that I have to initiate the lane change. The car will suggest when it thinks it's safe, turns on the camera display so I can verify the blind spot, and I confirm via the turn signal. If you're feeling daring, you can configure the car to initiate the lane change on it's own.

We just got our. So the enhanced auto pilot is like full self driving on the highway? Somehow we are having trouble using our EAP. Tesla customer service said it's because it's in BETA (we are not getting the full feature). We didn't get the single blue line like yours and per customer service it won't and 2 blue lines is the enhanced mode activated.

They don't know what they are talking about. Two solid blue lines on each side of the vehicle is basic auto pilot, which every Tesla has. If you purchased Enhanced Auto Pilot for the additional $6K, you'll get the single blue line down the middle of the lane when you are navigating on Autopilot. To activate Navigate on Autopilot, which is part of EAP, you have to tap the button on your Nav Screen when you are navigating to a destination. It's near the "End Trip" button. I think I showed that at the start of this video. I've got another video out there that explains the difference between basic and enhanced Autopilot if you're interested.

Does auto lane change only work on highways or does it also do it in the city?

It’s really designed for highway driving, but it will work on multi-lane city streets. Keep in mind Autopilot is very different from FSD.

I haven’t seen any release notes saying it’s been addressed, but I can tell you from personal experience, I haven’t had a problem with it in the last few months.

Appreciate the comment. Just took a 12 hour road trip and leveraged EAP quite a bit. It works so much better when you are in normal (non rush hour) traffic.

@@EmiyaHilson That's a good question. I do like the auto lane change feature, and navigate on auto pilot had some benefits during that road trip. Haven't been able to evaluate the other 3 features, because they're not available. Is it worth the $6K, probably not.

Seems very much like a work in progress the Enhanced Autopilot. It's quite outrageous that Tesla make no mention of that this feature is still in the development phase when buying it and yet charge USD $6000 plus tax for it! It's quite the Con in my view!

The problem is EAP is leveraging the non-FSD code base. We'll see what happens when they work out the kinks with the current FSD releases being rolled out to testers, which merge the two code bases. The question is will that FSD code become the new Autopilot/EAP code.
