In that way, it would be a long term invest and you would not lose it when changing cars (as long as you stay with Tesla). And if you don't believe me watch Elons speeches as the financial quarter rolls around, where he'll tell you again they'll self drive a year from now and FSD prices will go up (as he has what feels like a dozen times by now). IMPORTANT NOTE: Even ignoring the beta FSD, in countries outside of the USA FSD can be severely limited in its capabilities. Understandably this video focuses on the US market, but if you are in another country your findings will be very different. For example in the UK Tesla offer "Enhanced Autopilot" as an option as the "FSD" in the UK offers very little more.

To add to this... Limited features in the UK and EU: - Navigate on Autopilot (Only available on 'motorways' in the UK) - Automatic lane changes (Only available on 'motorways', can't do lane changes on dual carridgeways) - Smart Summon (Can only travel 20 meters total and you must be within Bluetooth range, so basically at the door) - Autosteer (Can only perform up to 0.3g of lateral acceleration, meaning it slams on heavily for even rather mild turns) - Automatic lane changes again (Must indicate 3 times and move within x seconds, otherwise time out and move back to the original lane) - Attention checker, 'wheel nag' (Every 10 seconds, not up to 45 (I think?) in the US) Probably a bunch I'm missing, but those are the main ones that come to mind. :) At the end of the day... The FSD package in Europe offers 'some' automatic lane changes, 'occasional' following route (It struggles a lot on many EU interchanges it seems), and that's about it really.

Occasionally, I have taken over because it can't read a "Detour" sign or it takes too long to change lanes, but overall, it really works. The best thing about it is that it displays on the screen what it is thinking and what it is about to do. You can tell it's going to stop at the stop sign, or that it sees the red light, or that it sees the pedestrian, or that it's going to turn left, you can tell that it sees the oncoming traffic, or whatever else it is thinking. It's pretty remarkable.

There is still value in buying now but not joining beta and wait until the beta is replaced with general release. It was £4000 when I bought it expecting to not get much for many years. The Nav on AP was so useful on my Grand Tour of Europe in 2019, I reckoned I had my value for money already. I planned to hope to benefit from true FSD as I reached the age when I would otherwise have to think about hanging up my car keys, so extending my personal mobility by quite a few years. This will be my last vehicle if it doesn’t get killed in an accident, so FSD was highly desirable as a gamble purchase when I could afford that, but not the long range AWD. I knew I would not ever manage the increased price if I waited until it was a definite done deal, so buying when I did made sense - it was then or never for me. If I had to make that decision now, it would be harder, but I might still opt in now to beat future price rises, knowing that retirement income wouldn’t justify monthly rental.

Nothing can match a Tesla's performance per mile. Replacing the battery is still more economical than buying a new Tesla over the long run.

Keep in mind the net present value of your cash. This is the concept that having cash in hand today is worth more than cash later because of what you can do with it in the meantime. Paying 7000 for full self-driving three years ago means that cash was tied up all three years

The problem is if he keeps upping the price, no one will get it. Most people I speak to refuse because of the price.
@SamuelHauptmannvanDam2 жыл бұрын
I'm almost certain they are raising the price because they DON'T want people into the program right now and to obviously show it's value. But reality is that if two car companies with basically same seats in it, offers to drive you somewhere, you really won't care much about what car it is, just the price and it is going to quickly be a race to the bottom when common. Like so many other features of cars. Which is great, but it's to say I wouldn't worry too much about the price in the long run. If another car company offers what autopilot does + lane change, then I think it's going to be more than enough for 90% of people for right now.
@BrianJoslyn2 жыл бұрын
I'd probably get it, just to have it, if I had the bux. I don't like the thought of monthly payments for something like FSD because, at $12k, you make 61 payments (which is five(ish) years of payments) and you've paid more than $12k. Tesla NEEDS to let people pay the $12k and own it - thus, having the ability to have FSD included on another Tesla when trading/replacing one for another. However, I do like the ability to pay monthly for a month or two or so to have some time to decide whether to pay the $12k or 'lose' the feature.
@allenbaylus33782 жыл бұрын
So I am curious - if you paid $5-7,000 for it years ago and it is still in Beta (even though it was promised "coming soon" often) and it still is not available now, was that actually money well spent.

I was hoping to hear more explanation about the software differences in AP vs FSDb stack. For example, in regular autopilot the car brakes way too late for slowing traffic but I do not see this issue come up in the FSDb stack. Im wondering if the jerk comfort analysis decision tree or whatever has a lower threshold in FSDb?

My prediction we won’t truly see full self driving in our lifetime where you don’t need to pay attention. Otherwise like you said, its more stressful and you have to pay MORE attention now than you driving the car yourself. So for me, a big no for 7K, 10k, 12k for fsd. Even more so not worth it if it doesn’t transfer with the owner. But… tesla can do it because people still buy it

"In our lifetime". Not sure how old you are, but let's say that's 50 years. So you're saying in the time frame it took us to go from the first PC release in 1981, or then Nintendo NES (1983), until today, we can not get to L4 autonomy from what you can see FSD doing today? Would you like to bet some money on that?
@RyanJBuell272 жыл бұрын
I predict level 5 autonomy to be possible by year 2030, not 2025 like DirtyTesla suggests might be possible. The depreciation doesn’t justify buying FSD if I will have to wait 8 years

When the car is on NoA with EAP is the car MORE efficient than Basic AP. Given I plan to trade up to a new tesla every 2 or 3 years so buying FSD is not financially worth it, I'll use the $199/mo subscription. EAP/FSD should transfer to new cars.

I would love to see most of the current FSD features included with autopilot once FSD Beta (True FSD) goes live. Changing lanes, stop signs, summons, auto park, all seem far more in line with a standard autopilot feature set, and 'Tesla's expected level of technology/premium pricing' if you will.

We are very rural and wondering if you think it's worth applying for Beta? We get A LOT of phantom braking and car getting sun in its eyes and making driver assist unavailable and LOTS of collision warnings on 1 and 2 lane highways and "corrected for your safety" deals when we are right ON THE DRIVEWAY . We'd love to test all the features, but FSD seems more geared toward freeway and urban areas presently.

I think some of the things you just described about full self-driving versus autopilot is incorrect. Traditional autopilot with autosteer works on the highway just as you described without having to have FSD. So is Auto Park which by the way doesn't work very well for me. The green light chime chimes even if you're not in autopilot just driving the car. Stopped at a red light and the light turns green, it chimes. The big difference between standard built-in autopilot and FSD is that FSD supposed to work on city streets on city streets where standard autopilot does not. I have had FSD beta in my 2018 Model 3 for a few weeks now and it definitely does not work very well. You constantly have to take over. Definitely not worth $12,000 at this point.

For EVERYONE proposing to tell Tesla what to do about FSD, Tesla will do whatever makes economic sense. You aren’t smarter than Tesla or you would own and manufacture a company like Tesla. The price of FSD is based on its future worth that’s why the price increases each time progress is made. If you can’t afford it or want to ignore its potential, DONT BUY IT. Quit bitching about what you want or think you deserve.

And I have friends who love to be my co-pilot when I run beta. Anytime people experience beta, they wished they had 1. A Tesla too, 2. Beta. Is it worth it? Tell me what you think is a better buy. FSD isn't worth 12 thousand. It's worth it if tied to your account, not the vehicle. Fewer and fewer potential customers will purchase when they keep raising the prices, and full self-driving recordings that help improve it will slow down because fewer users submit data. Also, is it better for tesla's budget, fewer customers at a higher or lower cost but more people buying the option?
@JoshuaT9022 жыл бұрын
truly don't understand why it's per vehicle. You buy the software so having it for all your vehicles cost Tesla nothing.
@FrederickKoehlmann2 жыл бұрын
People need to look at the $12,000 as an investment, and for investing a person needs to be willing to take a chance and have available capital. If you don't have the capital, then definitely don't get it. If investing, well maybe buy Tesla stock for now? It might appreciate faster than FSD. We did pay for it back in 2019, but we're older and if it can drive me around in later years, great. We also don't see getting rid of the car. We suspect that it will be with either us or our kids, so for us we see it as investing in the future.
@adewouters2 жыл бұрын
I love Teslas and I dream to have one, but I'll never buy FSD. You know, already for many years, as long as I can remember actually, you can take a vehicle that will drive you from point A to point B without having you to do any of the driving at all, it's called a cab or an Uber or a bus, and it costs a lot less than that. Just to say that I don't even understand why FSD exists. If you don't want to drive, then why do you buy a car at all ? Call an Uber. Or wait for a Robotaxi, if you don't want to be in anything else than a Tesla. FSD is totally pointless, IMHO. And sorry to say but according the quantity of work you do to help developing FSD, it's actually Tesla who should pay you. After all, Tesla employees are paid for their work, aren't they ?

I kinda wish they would segregate the features more with terminology or tiers something. The layman are so confused and just keep thinking autopilot kills people and that it drives the car its self

Owning a 2020 M3LR with FSD in Germany, I did some sobering math lately: even reaching Lvl 2 autonomy ("hands off") on the Autobahn will require significant HW upgrades. According to Tesla, rearward camera vision extends to max. 100m. Sounds rather optimistic with 1280x960 px wide angle cameras. Keep in mind: (still) NO speed limit on many German Autobahns! So, cars and motorbikes in the fast lane frequently exceed 120 mph, occasionally 150 mph. Picture my Tesla driving behind a slow truck (
