Testing what could be a much better solution for a whole home backup as compared to my old generator. The main question is how long will the EcoFlow Delta Pros last just running critical loads in my house. Also, how do you charge these units and make this setup a feasible multi-day backup system?

Nice setup. I set a google calendar reminder to myself to go out every 4 months and start/run our gas-powered generator for 10-15 minutes to keep it ready to go. I put just a cup of gas or so in it at a time and always turn off the petcock at the end of the run to let it burn out whatever is left in the carb. So far, so good. Generator starts on the second or third pull every time. I have notes on the breaker panel about which circuits to turn off during a power outage. I feel like I have things set up so well that I almost wish we would have a power outage so I can be a hero and get everything running on generator power. But since I've got it all set up so well we've never lost power. That's how it works. 🙂

If you can afford a $6k solar generator unit then might as well get a good gas generator. They are reliable and put out a ton of power. As long as there is gas available. Start it and run it 2 times a year. Right before winter is a good time to run it and make sure you can get it started. I would recommend a duel fuel generator. That’s only thing I would do differently. Propane is easier to store for long term.

Nah, I would rather spend all that money on buying this hugh computerized battery and the electric bills to charge it. Have it quit in 5 hours and it takes 10 hours to charge it (but the powers off right now) or put a on solar panel and it takes a week! It locks up and has to be power cycled to get it to work again, it shuts off for some multiple nonsense goofy errors(get out the manual) press the reset button. Nah that wasnt it - get the manual out again oh gotta call the company? (but the phones are out) Dont be a dick like the guy who has this channel whos trying to sell them to you.

Excellent video, I also thought about using solar generators to power my 240 volt needs, like my well pump, so I bought 2- Renogy Phoenix 1000 units and their parallel/split phase connector cable. Combined capacity is almost 2000 watt hours and up to 2700 watts for the invertor. The connector cable is a 30 amp outlet, NEMA L14-30. I needed to see how you setup the junction box and will test it when complete. Obviously will not furnish 30 amps, but around 12. The Eco flows are more powerful and adaptable but the Renogy costs much less, $750 for each unit plus the connector cable for $99, so for $1600 plus tax, I have a smaller capacity version of your Ecoflows. I have enjoyed many of your videos on electrical repairs and now you are branching into solar, outstanding!

Just completed the break-in period and so far the unit is operating perfectly kzbin.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y . I was amazed by just how quiet this little guy is. I kept having to walk down the driveway to the generator to make sure it was still running. In fact, the most annoying noise coming from the set-up is a high-pitched chirping coming from the pressure regulator on the propane line. I suppose it's possible my other propane-powered generator's pressure regulator is making the same noise, but the generator itself is so loud I've never noticed it. Build quality so far is excellent. My only nit is the service panel is a little tricky to remove. I feel like I might break off one of the plastic tabs when bending it back. I probably just need to work out the technique, so will not hold it against Champion.Next week I intend to fully load the unit to charge a large battery pack and will update this review if there's any problem (3000W continuous load vs a rated 3100W capacity while using propane). Absent any trouble there, I'm 100% pleased with this purchase.

On gas generators there is a float in the fuel line that 'sticks' if you let the generator sit unused for a long time. If you pick up one end of the generator a couple inches and drop it, the float will free up and the generator will run fine. At least for me this is the case. I used to have problems all the time getting it running until a neighbor explained it to me.

Wouldn't the best approach be to use both your Ecoflows and the gas generator in tandem? When the Ecoflows get low on battery, simply charge them from the generator. Would likely only need to run the generator for a few hours a day for recharge purposes only. It certainly seems the most efficient way in a power outage.

@@EverydayHomeRepairs Just wanted to say I appreciate your videos and have learned a lot from them! But aren't the charge inputs on the Delta Pro 1,800W/15A/120V each? I don't own one, but that's what their website says. If so, you could recharge both Delta Pros in less than two hours with your Westinghouse gas generator on its 120V outputs. 1,800W * 2 hours = 3,600W, which is the capacity of each Delta Pro. With a couple gas cans, you could power your house for days only running the generator for a few hours a day. I'm thinking of buying one myself, so this isn't just a mental exercise. 😀

@@EverydayHomeRepairs DVH is disabled if you attempt to AC charge the DP's from an AC power source. Yard tools are pretty unsatisfying for backup power. I have Ryobi mower & tools, and an eGO snowblower. The eGO "generator" seems a good use for the batteries I'm not using 9 months out of the year, but even with 4x 7.5ah (420 WH) batteries, that's only around 1.6 KWh total, at a cost of around $1200 for the machine and two batteries (plus the two I already have). The Ryobi system would deliver even less power at about $900 assuming you already have two batteries of at least 5 AH each, and the two batteries included with the generator kit won't fit some of your other tools because, for no clear reason, the 5 & 6 AH packs you get with the generator are thicker than the 6 AH packs used on their mowers (But that's normal for Ryobi 40V; the 4 AH pack for my trimmer has a wedge end that makes it too long to fit the mower unless the battery cover is propped open. Great as individual tools, poor as a system.)

my whole house runs off electricity! summer and winter. I live in Central Ontario Canada and the average temperature is about minus 15C (-15C). For the most part we don't have many power outages and when it happens its fixed quickly. The item that concerns me is the sump pump which due to ground water runs fairly regularly. It is located in the Crawlspace and flooding is possible in the extreme conditions. Battery back up is the sensible way to go. We recently sold our home Generator because of the same reason you mention, lack of use led to the generator needing more maintenance then it was used for? But my question is where do you live that your electricity is only in the 20's during winter? Does this mean your heating with gas or propane and the electrical is only for the fan?

FYI, Amazon sells adapter cables, which on one end have a NEMA 240 volt plug with the two power legs "bonded together", while the other end has a RV type 30 amp plug. The power leg bonding allows both legs to be active at the same time. This type of cable will allow you to power both legs of a 240-volt (2 power legs) transfer switch from the 30 amp 120 volt plug on the Delta Pro. Of course this will not allow you to power 240-volt circuits. But on my 240 volt transfer switch I do not run any 240-volt circuits; all 10 circuits are 120 volt.

Is there another combination of Delta brand batteries with enough to power a whole house that would be less expensive? Expensive ! Hope the price comes way down. Ideally, I would like to have one at each place I have a regular outlet and have them all charge by solar, and get off the grid. I have "Ameren" too. Not the good ole days of Government regulated Union Electric anymore. The house I moved into have one of these so called "Smart" meters. Tells me that my Air conditioner has used $44,00 so far, which is interesting considering that not only is it not on, but it's not even connected. But they're charging me for it anyway. Then they have something there for "laundry" which is also interesting since I haven't done any laundry. But those crooked crooks are charging me for that too. They're also charging me for "Water Heater" which is odd because I have an all gas water heater powered by "Laclede Gas" (Spire) So they're just screwing me over every-way from Sunday, which is why I want to get off that system. Also those so called "smart" meters emit cancer causing radiation. What I would like to see with those is GFCI protection. As it looks there, if something happened, there is no way it would shut down, unless it's built into the circuitry. And what if the device itself becomes submerged ? What happens then ? Despite all of that, I think if they came down to under $500.00 I would start building a collection for everywhere I have something I NEED first, then add on extras, then hopefully, eventually get away from the crooked Union Electric Nazi Regime. Great video, thanks for posting.

A gas powered generator test run 3-4times a year for 20mins with a minimal amount of gas ( so when an emergency accrues your filling it's tank with fresh fuel)will and can run many times longer then a battery power supply system. Why? All you really need is refill gasoline. With a few 5 gallon gas cans ( exchanged for fresh fuel once a year) the generator can get you thru a week+ long power outage. Battery storage generator are good IF: you have a substantial solar array to recharge it and you have plenty of day light which is not usually the case during storms. Me? 40yr Lic Elec Contr, backup 20K gen installer, owner battery power supply, gas gen owner. Think it thru now before you need it.

The price of those ecoflows vs the time and power you get from a generator just doesn't make them appealing to me. I live somewhere where we probably lose power once a year, sometimes for a few days due to hurricanes. A topped of generator with 10 gallons of gas typically sees us through it. Battery cost and capacity are just not there.

True, however, one of the things I like most is the mobility. I understand this wouldn't help most people, but my farm is separate from my house and it's totally off grid. With the generators, I can move them to where I need them and it works out to be way cheaper than having a stand alone system for each structure

It seems far more convenient than a gas generator to me. I don't have to maintain and cycle out fuel, there's essentially zero noise while they're running, I can recharge them from a generator when low (and during the day only) or from solar. I don't see how a noisy ICE solution is more convenient, except to my wallet.
@DillonFinnegan
@DillonFinnegan Жыл бұрын
@@markkempton4579 but when your power is out when will you have time to charge these up because solar can’t charge them as fast as I would drain them. And they are 6500 bucks. Don’t get me wrong I’d love to have them but I’m never spending that much on them.
@markkempton4579
@markkempton4579 Жыл бұрын
@@DillonFinnegan you cut back your consumption either way. Calculations I've seen for my house say I can charge them most of the way with solar and top off with generator. @DillonFinnegan
@DillonFinnegan Жыл бұрын
@@markkempton4579 for sure. I mean if the grid goes down something like this is going to be the only solution for power after the first month goes by and nobody’s got gas. @@DillonFinnegan that is a lot of gasoline! I don't know anyone who is that prepared. Certainly requires some active maintenance. How long are you able to stabilize it for? My personal goal is a natural gas generator, so we don't need to deal with gasoline.

Anything that has to do with battery's is a real turn off for me. If you don't cycle them enough they won't work & if you do cycle them enough you only get so many cycles till they go belly up. I'd like to see a natural gas powered genset, not as finicky as gasoline but much more reliable than battery's. Show us a natural gas powered genset in an upcoming video. Thanks

You'll be using your gas or propane generator to recharge your "solar" generator if you need it more than a day and you don't have adequate solar, which many of us don't have. Spend your money on larger capacity lifepo4 batteries and a good inverter.
@EverydayHomeRepairs
@EverydayHomeRepairs Жыл бұрын
Yep, that is not a bad option as you could charge both units at 1200 watts (max rate through 120V outlet) which means you definitely run the generator for a few hours then shut it down and let the battery take over draining down for 4-6 hours and then charge them back up.

On a channel where you're teaching people details on repairs for DIY it would be a more welcome idea to show people how to build their own battery backup systems with an inverter. It would cost less than half the cost of what you present. You could even show people these EcoFlow units then compare spending the same amount in their own simple inverter/battery build so they can choose what they're willing to do. I suspect your viewers are DIYers due to wanting to save money. I'm sorry but I think you dropped the bucket on this video.

VERY HELPFUL FOR ME, as I am also hostage to Ameren for electricity ! Their "dependability " to keep my lights on is questionable at best and damn LOUSY too often... (NOT EXACTLY FOND OF MY UTILITY COMPANY !!! ) Seriously considering installing something like EcoFlow for some dependability and peace of mind. Cost is ,of course, a major issue... but our electric grid is so old and patched so many times that we break out the candles and flashlights EVERY TIME a storm is possible. Obviously that sucks but it is where people in my neighborhood find ourselves, especially when summer storms can happen for days on end. Ameren won't be spending their record profits to replace our unreliable electric grid in my small area, of that we can be sure !!! Seems to be on each homeowner to improve the odds of having dependable electricity. Seems a DAMN SHAME to me, but that is our reality !
