I love John, but I feel like his two pts don’t satisfy the objection. Moses also cared about the glory of God, but he wasn’t allowed to substitute himself when the people sinned. Also, just because a sacrifice infallibly works doesn’t make it just or right. That’s very utilitarian. The question is an ethical one, not a pragmatic one. While these pts might factor in, I suspect a more complete answer must include something about Jesus’ Divine identity and special status as the Son of God. Since he is ultimately the only one truly offended in all our sins, he has the right to freely choose to suffer the penalty himself. He is the only one who has been wronged. Everyone else is wronged in a derivative way, because God is wronged in their harm. Therefore, God truly has the right to forgive any sin, because all sin is ultimately committed against him, first and foremost. But to forgive, he must somehow suffer the penalty. So he substitutes himself. The reason it is wrong for a mere human to do this is that humans are finite creatures. There are other authorities above us and other people with dignity besides us. We are not the only ones wronged. Therefore, we don’t have the ability or the right to presume to forgive, or pay for, the sins of any other person. But God himself is different in this respect. Therefore, it is no less than Jesus’ Divine nature that gives him the right to sacrifice himself in our place.

I agree and would add that he glossed over a very important point; We were buried amd raised with him by the faith-union that he established. We did die in a way as we were baptized into his death but without the perfect nature in concert with the sinless flesh he would have no right to die for us. Simbiotic substitutionary atonement perhaps?

I agree with you but as John Piper says, he's only offering 2 answers among several. Not sure about the right to forgive, what about the verse telling us that what we bind on earth will be/is bound in Heaven, and what we loose on earth, will be/is loosed in Heaven?

@@PennySmart in Greek, that verse says what you bind on earth “will be having been bound in heaven” (ie, already). It’s an unusual, specific construction. Basically, our binding is meant to follow heaven’s binding. We do what heaven is already doing. Jesus grants us a special authority to declare what he is already decreeing. I believe the application of this is in church discipline and excommunication. When ppl refuse to repent of their sins, we have Christ’s authority to tell them their sins aren’t forgiven. Then, we enforce that authority by denying them fellowship and especially the sacrament. On the flip-side,if we discern that someone is repentant, we can declare their sins are forgiven and offer them fellowship and sacrament. In this way, we are literally the gatekeepers to the kingdom of heaven. But the forgiveness or lack thereof was already declared in heaven. We are just declaring what heaven has already declared. Only God can forgive sins committed against God.
