Wait as a ski coach I'm very worried about this video! The slalom bar is not made at all for protecting you if faceplating, its not a full face helmet! Its made to protect you from the slalom gate to hit your face while going down. When we free ski, I ask my athletes to take their other helmet or to take the bar off because its actually dangerous to fall with a bar on for your neck....
@AdamU10162 жыл бұрын
I understand your point of view. I was not promoting it for fast rides but simply as an alternative helmet when doing mellow rides. This slalom helmet in addition to my mod which reinforces the chin bar’s strength is at least better than a regular helmet with no chin protection. I have since further reinforced the chin bar with paracord. For my regular fast rides I use my Bell 3R helmet with MIPS. Please watch the full video if you have not. In a slow ride I have a much better chance to initiate a tuck and roll to decrease a full face plant. It has actually happened to me on a mellow ride and I was able to do my evasive maneuver to avoid having to test the chin bar. Even if I do end up with a face plant the reinforced chin bar would at least absorb some of the impact to decrease the force of blow. In my video link below, I have the full clip of my fall while using the POC helmet: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJCpeKqZjNF2gac

@@AdamU1016 im sorry but no, its not a full face at all its a ski helmet and the bar is made to protect your chin in case the slalom bar hits you. You should never free ski with a bar, its better not to have one. If you fall the bar can hurt your neck because I repeat is not a full face.

@@elissaalgora5907 - I do appreciate your input. You are a ski instructor and certainly more knowledgeable with the chin bar issue. You are saying that if the chin bar breaks, it could hit my neck. Did you watch in the video that I had shown a skier fall forward and the chin bar stayed intact? I reinforced that same chin bar on my helmet. My rationale is that it should be enough to tolerate a low speed crash. I am stressing the low speed because I intend to include my tuck and roll technique in my falls. I am a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and quite comfortable in judo falls similar to tuck and roll. For fast rides I use my Bell full face helmet. I use the POC helmet with chin guard on mellow rides where I should have time to do the tuck and roll. Did you watch the link where I fell and did the tuck and roll? I do use my Bell 3R MIPS full face helmet when I go on group rides with my EUC. I don’t ski anymore but if I do again I would be wearing a regular helmet with no chin bar.

@@AdamU1016 Hi, Im actually a race coach. We are aware that in some cases the bar does'nt come off when you fall and that it can be dangerous for the neck in extension, because the helmet offers no neck protection like a full face helmet would. A full face is made so that you dont extend your neck, but not a slalom helmet. Which is why we only use the bar when we do slalom gates.
@Pantera-tp6jz2 ай бұрын
Hi, as somebody who actually practices both snowboarding and downhill moutain biking i would just like to point out that ski helmets are by no means a replacement for full face motorcycle style helmets the main reason we wear those over the top helmets for biking, apart from the superior protection they offer at the high speed we are going at (up to around 65mph for elite athletes during races) is also the better coverage they provide when it comes to crashing into obstacles keep in mind that the ski slope is extremly smooth and the helmets are made for that situation and not a meeting with a rock face at highway speeds. I've seen many destroyed chinbars on downhill helmets, i would be very afraid of the chinbar on the poc helmet snapping and causing severe damage to your head. In conclusion this helmet is designed mainly for snow sports use and it's not recommended to use it outside of those conditions.
@AdamU10162 ай бұрын
@@Pantera-tp6jz I do appreciate your input but did you even watch a second of the video? I mentioned that I would be riding it for mellow rides. For the faster group rides, I would be using my Bell full face helmet. A helmet is better than no helmet in a slow speed fall. As a favor, please watch my video as I really put great effort in presenting my point of view.
@Pantera-tp6jz2 ай бұрын
@AdamU1016 i did watch the second part of the video but still my point stands those helmets are designed for skiing where obstacles are quite rare, the bar could in my opinion easily split on a rock or a curb during a fall causing substantial injuries. I don't so much mind the helmet itself being used but in my opinion a half shell mountain biking helmet would offer better protection.
@AdamU10162 ай бұрын
@@Pantera-tp6jz The half shell helmet has no front protection at all. The POC helmet in the video has the front portion of the helmet so thick that in addition to the chin bar which I had also mentioned was further reinforced with another same POC chin guard (therefore double the firmness and thickness of the original) should be able to provide enough tension and protection to prevent a full on faceplant. I have since strengthened the chin guard with paracord wrapped multiple times at 3 major points. The half shell helmet would have no face plant protection at all. As I said in my video, this POC helmet with reinforced chin guard and SPIN technology (similar to MIPS) will be enough for slow rides less than 20 mph. When one crashes at that speed, it is not like a tree that falls flat on the ground. The body is in a forward motion so the kinetic energy is being dissipated as one slides to a stop. When an EUC rider falls, we don’t have the Wheel still connected on our feet. We become disconnected to the EUC and able to move our legs and free hands to do evasive maneuvers. In addition, we are not rag dolls that just flop down in a fall. Evasive maneuvers such as tuck and roll and even just a movement of the free hands with wrist guards. In a slow crash there is increased reaction time. In addition to all I mentioned, the POC helmet with reinforced chin guard will be enough in a slow speed crash. It also does not look as intimidating as my Bell full face. All these justifications and more are explained in my well thought out video which I hope you will watch in its entirety and not just look at the cover picture for the conclusion.

The intro clip of you riding in your hospital uniform had me worried. Be careful of your long coat getting sucked into the wheel cavity space. The wind is helping keep your coat off of the tire, but I can imagine a case at lower speeds where the tire grabs your coat and pulls it in.

I have actually modified the reinforcement since then. The zip ties were replaced with 0.5 mm paracord wrapped several times at 3 points. One in the center and one at each end of the chin bar. Thank you. I am waiting for mine to be delivered. I have been asking but all the responses were very straight forward “no good, you need a full face helmet”. Your explanation supports my decision. For easy going rides POC is good enough. At the current time I only travel at 30 to 40 km/hr. I feel silly wearing a full face when a cyclist blows by me at 42 and he is in a head coverage cycling helmet. If I ever get a big boy EUC and start riding at 60+ km/hrs then a real helmet will be in play.

My first wheel (Fastwheel Eva Pro) back in 2015 had max speed of 22 km/hr and back then that was considered fast. Lol. My 2nd wheel in 2016 (KS14C) had max speed 32 km/hr. Full face helmets back then weren’t even considered. I have crashed at 20-30 km/hr and had plenty of reaction time to minimize injury via either running it out or a tuck and roll. I feel the POC helmet in slow rides would be sufficient as headgear. However, if you plan to do fast and aggressive riding then a full face should be in order. Thanks for watching and stay safe!

I like the helmet for low speed riding and the reinforcement is a good idea, but it doesn't really provide any additional structural rigidity. For it to add more rigidity, it would need to be attached to the helmet. Since it's just taped and zip tied to the existing chin bar, all it does is provide a little bit of padding.

This is so confusing to me. The slalom chin-guard is in no way designed to protect you from facial impact with the ground, and is why the breakaway system is highly regarded. This chin guard is designed to prevent a ski racer who’s skiing slalom from losing their teeth to the gate if it so happens to hit them in the face. Any impact harder than that and these guards usually cause more damage than they prevent. You are promoting using this product in an unsafe manner.

Thanks. When I first started riding I bought the cheapest gear I could find because I felt basically at the speed I went I just really needed to prevent road rash. That was many years ago when the max speed of wheels was 15-20 mph. I feel that when going only 10-15 mph most important to wear are helmet and wrist guards. Now EUCs can go 50 plus miles per hour. That is both good and bad. It is good that the higher max speed will decrease the chance of power cutout when the rider tries to go really fast. The bad is that injuries at high speed can be quite disastrous. Of course, an accident can happen anytime and my worst injury occurred at about 5 mph when I misjudged and got pedal clipped. I ended up fracturing my right rib. This is where knowing how to fall is also a must. Below are gear that I would recommend that are less expensive but are of good quality. I do have these Triple 8 elbow pads and the ones I recommended have Kevlar material and have Velcro straps to keep them from slipping off. My Triple 8 elbow pads helped prevent me from clavicular fracture when I fell sideways so I am convinced the material is thick and durable. With regards to wrist guards, make sure you get ones that have supporting splints to decrease the chance of hyperextending the wrist as well as sliders (very important) to further decrease the chance of hyperextending your wrist. I don’t like wearing external body armor such as the ones some wear. It looks overkill. I like to look more subtle by wearing a motorcycle jacket. They look less bulky, are made of tough material and have included back protector, shoulder and elbow pads. Cyclegear.com have great jackets at decent prices too. I never got the feeling that the helmet is too soundproof. I can easily hear when a car is about to come close from behind me. Regarding being too muffled to hear the wheel beeps I can understand what you mean. I think at speeds greater than 30 mph the wind noise just muffles the wheel beeps no matter what helmet we wear. I have heard of mods where people replace the built in speakers with bigger drivers though so it can be heard louder.

I've been looking at this helmet for quite some time now, since I usually ride with a bike helmet with no chin guard and I just don't like full face helmets at all (tried the coolest TSG Pass and hated the feeling of being isolated) for various reasons. What I can't understand is can this chin guard actually protect you from hitting your jaw when you crash, is it strong enough for that, or will it snap off or crack immediately upon impact? The helmet itself was created for slalom competitions so it seems that this jaw piece is intended for hitting hard snow surfaces, but asphalt is much harder than snow...I was really hoping you would test the used chin guard by itself with a real impact on asphalt :)
@AdamU10163 жыл бұрын
The chin guard is definitely not as strong as my Bell helmet chin guard. The POC chin guard is pliable and not hard and brittle. Therefore, I feel it offers some give and less likely to break than a stiff chin guard. If anything the chin guard would lessen the impact and injury in a faceplant. In my video I did show a slalom skier face planting and the POC chin guard was effective and stayed intact. The POC helmet is also rather thick up front so that also offers increase buffer distance from a full on face-plant as I showed in my demo. I was not fully reassured by the POC chin guard durability if it could fully protect me in a face plant. That is why I decided to reinforce it with another POC chin guard I bought off EBay for $18. I have since further reinforced its connection by wrapping black paracord multiple times on both sides as well as midline. It is fully secure now. Overall, I feel more confident wearing this helmet versus a regular bike helmet with a chin guard and without looking too intimidating.

@@Babyfasty - I see what you mean. On a motorbike you are also going much faster than I on an EUC with max speed no more than 35 mph. The cheeks are free when wearing the POC but for me at the speed I go through the helmet is secure. On my most recent crash, the helmet did stay in place. Here is my most recent video experiencing a crash while wearing the POC helmet. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJCpeKqZjNF2gac
