As a metric user, here's a hot tip. All types of builders work in millimetres or meters, not centimetres, only dress makers work in centimetres. Loving following your journey Tom. Cheers from Oz

Exactly Josh! Last time I actually used cm was in grade school. Millimeters is the best way to avoid measurement issues as well as faster than dealing with 64th's and 32nd's. Especially when your apprentice is adding things up. 😂

I was a foreman of a pipe fitting crew assembling a combined cycle boiler for a power plant that was designed and built in Europe but we were doing the final assembly in the U S. All the drawings were in metric and I had never had to use the metric system except for my teachers telling me as kid we’re the only country that uses standard so you’ll need to know the metric system. That was 40 years ago. I discovered the Construction Master! Converts metric to standard very nicely!

​@stephentaylor280 Indeed! In 1972, we were told by our teachers that the USA was going to convert to metric in 10 years. I use metric a lot in my job as an engineer for a power brush / grinding wheel manufacturer that was bought out by a German company. And it is funny that we will make a 6" dia grinding wheel that is actually 150mm and a 125mm dia wheel actually 5". The marketing folks that decide that don't really have clue. It would be easier if we went fully metric intead of the mixed mess we have now. Metric is easy to understand, it's the conversion to SAE that can be challenging for some. Conversion would be mostly unnecessary if we flipped. There would be legacy products and systems that would need to be supported for some time so will be unable to go exclusively metric. That requirement will diminish in time.

Tom Tom, I am 67 and born into the Imperial System here in the UK. While at school, Metric came in and I have a foot in both camps. To this day I may measure one side of a piece of work in inches and the other in cm. When it comes to temperature, I use Centigrade when it's cold and Fahrenheit when it's hot.

I love that our tapes have both, so you can choose which is closest to what you want, you go to cut something 25mm wide by 4 inches long.

It's a fairly rare day that I don't use the 25.4mm/1" conversion at least once. I like dial calipers for simplicity, but a good digital that displays decimal inch or metric at the push of a button is a mighty nice feature and well worth the occasional button battery.

Aussie here. When using the metric system in fabrication/construction we dont actually use centimetres (cm). We go from millimetres (mm) to metres (m). So its either a 420mm bar, or a 0.42m bar.

English Engineer here. We don't use centimetres, but millimetres, the width of a pencil or marker. Seamstresses use centimetres as it is the convenient width of a seam. Engineers, of which you are a particularly talented one, use millimetres, or if it is bigger, metres .Love the Channel.

There is a 19thC warehouse in Antwerp where the Industrial Archaeologists couldn't figure out the dimensions in metric. On remeasuring the building in feet and inches it worked out fine. They reckon the cast iron parts we shipped from the UK and the rest made to fit!

Im not sure what the final plans of the build are, but where the rock slider come out past the body and there is a big gap between the slider and the bed, that could be a great spot for a storage box on each side of the rig and would fill that odd gap.

Wooo Hooo! I'm glad the tape has found some use! The big step will be going from centimeters, which we Canadians only use for our height on our drivers license, to Millimeters, which is the easiest way to measure. 1 cm = 10 mm. 43 centimeters = 430 mm. Between 43 cm and 44 cm there is nothing but dead air, but in mm its 430, 431, 432....440. Not that you didn't know that Tom, because I know you're way smarter than me. As a Canadian we are constantly converting between Metric and imperial measurements. It is Much simpler to use for example you don't have to figure out that if 17/64 is to small then you need a 9/32.

I used to work at a Bobcat plant. The tractors were shipped in from kioti on square tubing crates. I got a bunch for home use. I started to build a project, and it was metric sized tubing. Had to go buy inch sized tubing. I'll find a use for it one day.

Tom Tom there's a plastic wall board made for kid's rooms that would work great to put up on the wall behind your steel storage rack. The drywall will get messed up pulling the long bars in and out .

I've been touting the merits of the metric system for years. It's really embarrassing that we as a nation aren't. Going back and forth trying to use both just makes it worse. Use whatever system you want Tom. I can use both. Keep up the good work!

You could make a quick removal bracket for the bench seat and make it be able to mount in the bed of the truck. That way if you ever want to bring more people on trips you can quickly put it in the bed. Kind of like Paul at Fab Rat’s did with his FJ. 😎

Wagoneers are pretty rare when it comes to off roading, My dad built one when I was younger and it still needs a lot of work and now it needs to have the motor pulled because he went hot roding around the neighborhood and came back in the driveway and opened the hood. The problem is that this Jeep has the AMC 401 and parts are pretty hard to find especially the crank, basically if the crank is destroyed we're going with a new motor, but yeah Wagoneers are pretty durable off road and they get the job done.
