Ducati Monster 1200r and a Slingshot SL go to the mountains. Does having 3 wheels make you that much faster? Let's find out!
Thanks to Polaris Slingshot for letting me borrow this thing for a while and checking it out!

Outside to apex to outside is still the same in a car. As far as braking and downshifting, do it before the corner, the once you hit the apex throttle out.

In car you can do earlier apex safely. With motorcycle it is more safe to do late apex on public roads and use the power to accelerate out from the corners.

Yes, select the correct gear while slowing down towards the turn. Changing gear takes time and you have no power during that time, so it's best to do it while you don't need the power. Don't go full throttle, after the turn, until you know you can without backing off again (smooth throttle). All this is the same on a motorcycle though, but shifting takes longer on a car so you loose more by doing it wrong. I'm not an expert, so take my advise with a grain of salt.

ok, in this video it is obvious that you are still not used to driving a stick/manual car. You need to actual change gears like you are on your bike. you were loosing power because you were not in the correct gear at certain points in the curves..

When a car/bike allows you to have fun within the speed limit, it's a great thing... P.S I think Polaris needs to put you in touch with one of their test drivers. I'd also like to see how fast this thing can really go. P.P.S I think you'll find that the Slingshot may have also felt better after the shock adjustment because you were going uphill, and therefore on the throttle more, especially during a turn. With some rear-wheel drive vehicles, they prefer for you to be on the throttle when cornering.

Study trail braking. I have done bike and car track days. In a car, you want to straight line brake and down shift to just faster than you think that you can take the corner. Then, by trail braking, you can load the front end up, get a very quick turn in, and hold traction on the front wheels until the Apex. Hit the Apex with nuetral throttle and braking, then power out to the limit of traction and track width.

Chase, I don't know if you will see this or not. But the Slingshot is not made for handling, It's made for drifting. That's why it only has one back tire, and the KTM Crossbow has 4 tires. That's why you notice the TC kicking in so often.

TCS off, heel/toe downshifting, still hitting the apex of a turn, better tires, some things to consider for spirited driving in a car. Just my two cents on the subject.

I've been thinking seriously about getting a Slingshot. After close to 150k miles on a GL1800's at 57 I'm, getting to the age where I feel like sitting in one of these is a better option than a sports car. Thanks for pointing out the suspension option because there's not much more that I enjoy than getting in the twisties, even though the Goldwing isn't a sport bike I still get a lot of pleasure pushing it in the curves! I'm curious how the engine performs still, according to your review it sounds like it lacking power. Did you have to do a lot of shifting to keep it moving along? Thanks again, "Great review!"

I think you have the right idea with cutting the apex and exiting wide similar to how you would in a bike. I couldn't tell for sure what you were doing with braking and throttle but my only advice would be to brake leading up to the curve, coast as you enter the curve, and then smoothly accelerate as you go through and exit. mostly just don't brake while your in a turn, slow down before hand and accelerate through it. but more importantly just have fun ;)

For racing pace driving techniques: 1. Heel and toe foot use. 2.the corning you already said. Keeping the engine in the powerband with sequecial shifting. (But not during a turn). Turn off traction control and learn how to manage your lead foot.

With car (slingshot) it is a lot easier to haul ass since you can do all kinds of panic braking and stuff in the corners without falling down from the mountain. You know the limit for turn-in speed when it just understeers and won't wanna turn in. Keep it tight at turn-in and just hammer the throttle even before apex since it has traction control and so little power.

I already did but didn't really get to use cornering abs. I also prefer 1190! It has punchier engine and better feedback.

ValhalaFiveSix In Finland (and EU) it is classified as a three wheeler and can be ridden with both car and motorcycle license. Helmet is required. It sure is not steered like a motorcycle and therefore shouldn't be called motorcycle. Most of the US also require only a car license to drive it. Polaris actually is trying to get it classified as an "autocycle".

Same rule apply in cars, minimizing the traction needed with outside, inside, outside (straighten your line as much as possible) In a car, you do have 4 wheel, you compensate the traction with drifting/understeering (4 wheel drifting). You drift to reposition your car's pointing angle into the turn in accordance with your speed and direction.

Try an SLR or SLR LE with the 305mm rear tire. I rarely have issues with TC kicking in, and can power through mountain turns in 3rd without any loss of power. I originally test drove an SL and wasn’t impressed with the traction or braking, but the SLR is well worth the upgrade for that extra bit of capability.

@chase, some advice from a big car guy (drive a highly modified st180), you need to keep the slingshot between 2nd and 3rd gear. Need to get that rev matching going and continuosly shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear. I see your revs are mostly in the mid. You want to keep it between 4500-5500 rpm (think you said it maxed out at 6k). So your power not being there is because you hunting for the power in the top end. Downshifting before a corner is a big thing for cars. And turn that traction off :). You'll have far more control.of the car when its not fighting you.

I’m sure someone has said this but I’m not digging through your comments. There’s a saying in the autocross and track circles. “It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow”. That’s why you had so much fun. Get an MX-5 or BR-Z/FR-S. Go to an autocross even or a driving clinic. You’ll see what I mean. And I’m not telling you to buy one of those cars. Just find someone who’ll let you take one around an autocross course. Huge fun. Go drifting with Motonosity some time. You’ll get it.

Please go watch any video on how to do racing with a manual car. Your grip on the steeringwheel needs to be lower and you have to shift gears in like every turn, so that the engine is in its sweetspot all the time. I live in northern Norway where every single road is twisty and fast. If you trusted yourself and that Slingshot, and driving how you are supposed to drive when "racing" i bet you, you would have had waaaay more fun. Btw this is not hate, just tips

I would definitely watch some videos on track/autocross driving with a car, and learn how to heel/toe your downshifts (the car version of rev matching on a bike). Also the preferred hand position for performance driving in a car is at 9 and 3, or 8 and 4, not 10 and 2 (10 and 2 is what they teach in drivers ed for normal driving)

Lines and throttle are a little different in a car than on a bike, not entirely sure where the slingshot falls as far as that, I'd assume more towards car as bike lines capitalize on acceleration.

Hitting the apex like that is called the Formula line or F1 line. It's the same in a car on a track, on the street you don't have enough room most of the time without cutting lanes.

I've yet to see a slingshot properly haul ass. The lack of rear wheel traction seems to be the big issue. I also suspect the stock tires on the slingshot suck. Put on some good performance tires and you may find it has a lot more grip. The difference between an all season car tire and a high performance car tire is huge, where on a bike the difference between a sport touring tire and a super sport tire is minor. Under normal circumstances a proper 4 wheeled sports car will smoke a bike in the twisties, they can carry far more cornering speed, the bike's main advantage is quicker side to side transition and faster acceleration. As for the cornering line, it is the same, you just have less space to do it in with a car.

Go to a driving school. You are the kind of person that needs constant direction from a good instructor to quickly grasp the concepts (no offence you looked for instructions with those zip ties.) You will be amazed how fast you can go when you aren't guessing the whole time. Suspension tip for you. If you make the front stiffer than the rear it will move some of the grip towards the rear of the car.

Curious what happens with a passenger on both. I think it would effect the bike signifigantly but not so much the slingshot. That bike with a good rider would whoop a supercar on that road, so these results are expected. Three wheels aren't ideal for cornering. It's not all about lap times, fun factor means a lot to most people.

So the transaction issues in the long sweepers are probably because you're being overly aggressive on your turn in, you're having to do multiple turn ins on a single apex corner. As for power, it's not built to set lap records however you're not using your gear effectively also doesn't seem like your using all of the power band. Having said all that, you did pretty good for not being confident car driver/manual shift driver. kudos from the UK

Some of the Can Ams are a lot less expensive, and they are known for poor reliability. The Yamaha Niken should have very good reliability since it is based on the MT-09. Another major competitor is a new or used Mazda Miata/MX-5, with a roof that removes, a heater, an air conditioner and a little storage space, or the BRZ/86 with 2 small back seats. The Civic R front wheel drive is more practical where it snows in the winter and for seating 4 adults.

First off in a car, you'll need four wheels. Secondly tighter front and rear suspension with good directional street tires a must. The problems with a slingshot is the rear end. there's not much stability on one rear tire which causes body roll and at higher speeds can cause you to roll the vehicle over completely.
