I like your videos Warren, straight talk without rambling and straight to the point. I like your comment on "just nitpicking". I recently bought WA hardware for an analog channel strip and started off with the WA73-EQ and WA76. I'll add their Pultc and LA2A as well. I think most people wouldn't hear much difference without nitpicking ;) I look at it as $3100 vs. $750 for the WA and is the difference between original and clone a $2350 difference? Probably not but I'm glad I can get close to them at a fraction of the costs. Although I'm a broadcast engineering principal in my day job I do studio work for fun at home and cannot justify spending $50,000-$100,000 on analog hardware but can produce content that sounds like it ;)

The tone on the tracks in this video is superb! Love it. I mainly use valve mics (sE Gemini II and Icis) and have been using a Focusrite Clarett 4Pre into Logic Pro X for the last couple of years. The Clarett is a good bit of kit but I'm used to recording in bigger studios and when recording at home, I am missing the depth of soundstage that the gear in places like RAK and RWAV gives. I've always loved the clarity (but with warmth) of the Neve pres and am thinking that something like this would give me some extra tonal magic and a little useful shaping on the way in.

Personally I think the one with the EQ is better. It can change the character of the amp and make it sound like a different amp when you’re tracking. Th EQ makes it versatile

Anthony Martins Rock yeah great ta. Check out my latest vid. Recorded vocals with it. I tried bass but it didn't sound very good....don't know why. I plugged into instrument in front and used the output I usually use for vocals into my UR22. Perhaps there's another output I should have used? I'll look and try again. Or maybe DI bass is supposed to sound meh.....?

I like this review my friend. I like how you're not doing a deadlock comparison between a real 73 and WA73. Point is that it sounds great. Im tired of purists with their gear dogma. at the end of the day it just all has to sound great in the context of a song. keep it up!

Nice vid! That AT-2050 mic sounds great on the male voice! Is that a bright/detailed sounding mic in general? Also how much gain reduction do you usually go for when the DBX is in? Thanks!
@WarrenHenry6 жыл бұрын
It’s a tad bit brighter in the mids. I don’t primarily prefer it for vocals because of that feature. Gain reduction depends on the genre and song itself. Sometimes you want to hear the compressor because the song calls for it other times you might want to tame the transients just to get the vocal to sit better. In all cases using a little goes a long way. You can always add more compression If needed.

Thanks for the good info! I'm thinking of adding an Avantone CV12 valve mic to the collection, I've got a TLM-103 which is my main mic, a GAP R1 Mk2 ribbon and an SM57, also Shure Beta 54 A bass mic which I love ;-) Any experience of the CV12?
@WarrenHenry6 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard CV12 not a big fan. For about the same price check out the Warm Audio WA-414 and WA-87 mics they both sound awesome.
@TheGurner16 жыл бұрын
I'm on the point of grabbing a Cascade FatHead as a 2nd gtr cab mic to use with the '57 (Cascade are in Honiton, Devon UK near me). I'll def check out the WA mics you suggest. As my studio is 'less than perfect' acoustically I'm also considering another dynamic, maybe a Beyerdynamic M88 or M-160 double ribbon, both old radio studio stalwarts - thanks for the good info Warren!

I got this preamp couple days ago I notice it’s siblient with akg414 but I also have a Tml 102 an I notice her vocals sounded siblient in this video is this something you notice with this pre when it comes to vocals
@WarrenHenry6 жыл бұрын
Mario, Thanks for participating in the discussion. This preamp as with any preamp might respond to the highs differently. I might have added a bit of HF-eq at the top. What's good is that her vocal is not "Overly" sibilant. Sibilance is one of those "unecessary yet necessary evils". If one doesn't have the equipment to properly contain it whilst recording (a dedicated De-esser) it can become a nightmare come mix time. Also, improperly De-essing a vocal can yield unnatural results. The enunciation of words containing "S" can sound strange if improperly treated with a De-esser or if you don't know which frequency to treat. That said, It's more a mic technique and vocal production thing. Don't worry, During production of your vocals pay attention to both and you'll be fine. The WA73-EQ is a great piece of equipment. You made a good choice. Please, send me links to what you've recorded with it. Would love to hear. Thanks for watching✌🙏

Warren, your videos are amazing, and I really like the way you talk full of energy, it reminds the energy from my home country Brazil. You are also always very nice to people when you reply to their comments. I am thinking about buying the WA73EQ, do you think it may sound great with the Telefunken TF11 FET mic? It’s the only mic I own at the moment.

Hello Warren, I am between wa-73 and Long Studio (Russian preamp). Have you tried it? Just need some help to decide. Thanks for this video.
@WarrenHenry4 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching. I haven’t tried the Long Studio. However, when buying any equipment, how it’s built and what components are inside is key. That said, if the Long Studio has the build quality of Warm and is cheaper then maybe that’s what you buy, I like Warm for that reason and it fits well within my workflow (front panel mic jacks). I own an Neve 1073 and can tell you firsthand Warms build quality is on par and they stand by their product. If you happen to purchase the other make sure you buy from a dealer with a 30 day return policy. Hope that helps✌🏽

I have TLM49 running through a WA 73eq and WA 2A Compressor. What would be the best settings for the eq portion of the WA 73eq?
@WarrenHenry3 жыл бұрын
That really depends on the source you are recording. I try to give just a touch because it's so easy to get heavy handed. The 49 has a darker tone that might benefit from a +2 dB bump at 2K.

would this be better than an Avalon M5 Pre Amp that I already own or should I get an Avalon 737? The reason I ask is because while I like the M5, others have a different opinion about this preamp and I've been thinking about buying an upgrade
@WarrenHenry4 жыл бұрын
The Avalon is built like a tank and has a color and flavor of it's own. I like both the M5 and the 737. I wouldn't consider the WA73-EQ an upgrade as it has it's own character. Thanks for watching ✌🏾

THIS sound for under $700? That's nuts. People are way too picky and a lot of them will simply repeat reviews they've read somewhere without ever doing a blind test themselves. The point they miss is that this is a WARM WA73, not a Neve. How much does a Neve cost? uh huh. Sometimes the Toyota will do the same exact job as the Lexus with just a lot less money involved.
