True, however a revolver has some gas loss from the cylinder gap. I wonder if anyone has ever directly tested this. I wonder if they’re actually close or if the revolver still has the upper hand on velocity. Granted, variances in cylinder gap and limited guns in crossover calibers might make that hard to test.

Fusion in .308 and 6.5 CR get fantastic expansion. I am surprised the 357 didn't expand with the velocity. However I can say for handgun hunting all I use anymore is underwood hardcast. 10mm and 357. The underwood packs the punch for penetration . You will pick up some more speed with a G40 but It doesn't look like it would be enough to do anything. Great info!

I completely agree with you on your opinion of 10mm ammo. Well, I mean, agree with you on pretty much everything, but this is about 10mm. I have several .40 S&W pistols but if I were to have a 10mm pistol and load it with 10mm ammo, I would expect to have something a heck of a lot punchier than .40 S&W. "10mm Lite" is just silly and too many manufacturers seem determined to short us on power. I don't currently own a 10mil, but I do, I accept the greater weight and size only to get greater power. Now, as to these two rounds, they definitely seem meant for carbines. I mean, I guess these would do in a pinch for hunting/varmints, and such, but there are better rounds for handguns for sure. Anyway, as always, great test, lots of good information. Thanks!

I just assumed the 357mag fusion would be the same as 44 with shorter barrels guess not. I choose this round because I hike in black bear and some inland grizzly county so you don't what crazy fast expansion. If anything slow to none for better penetration. I did my own 4 layer cloth with 1/8" thick wood gel test using fusion 44mag with 629 2.5" sub barrel. 1210FPS with good expansion and 29" penetration. I was happy for my use and bought 200 more rds in 44mag. I May have to test or rethink the 357mag fusion ammo with short barrels now.

Federal underloads their ammo in almost every caliber. I know the Federal 5.7x28 is actually loaded by Fiocchi, but I pulled the projectiles, put a proper charge, re-seated the bullet & got a giant 400 FPS increase in velocity. Alaskan Ballistics shot the 10mm Fusion through several handgun barrel lengths into a cut of meat and wet newspaper. I like your theory about a longer bbl length for these rounds. A 16" lever gun for the .357, and whatever you can come up with for the 10mm(the CMMG Banshee is 8"), up to 16 or 18" would give you better velocity. I've been thoroughly unimpressed with much of Federal's revolver projectiles, and for the price, their factory loads as well. I like their "fusion" line in rifle chambering's, it's a barn-burner in .500smith (but what isn't when it comes to that round, lol) but I've really not cared for it in .44 and .454. Underwood used to be my go-to for factory price-performance ratio, but it's just as expensive as Buffalo Bore in my LGS these days... Glad primers are finally starting to trickle back in as I was getting really sick of paying $40 for a box of of 20 Federal "hunting" loads that don't seem to work any better than plain old soft points when Underwood/BB are no where to be found. Not sure if they make it in .357 or 10mm, but if one can find PPU (Privi Partisan, Czech company I believe) it's one of the best factory loadings that is still relatively affordable in .44mag; no reason to believe it wouldn't be great in other similar handgun rounds. Picked it up at the start of the shortage and liked it so much I went back and bought an entire case before they put box limits in place. Ran it in my M69, 7.5" Redhawk, and 1894 and is one of the few rounds I've found that each gun liked. Great brass for re-loading, consistent/accurate, projectile mushrooms about as well as a soft point can, and it's a good bit hotter than comparable 50rd "cheap" boxes from American Eagle, Win White box, etc. I routinely see it for about $48 for a box of 50, whereas AE/Win are about $70/box (and I was paying ~$30 not even 4 years ago... crazy) Everything I've tried from Privi has been excellent. I know it has nothing to do with Federal Fusion, lol.

If either round hits a bone, expansion might be better. If the bullet hits a big bone, as in the case of a bear or a big hog, you want it to stay together and smash through. This might also apply to a big deer with a shoulder shot, in which case the bullet would plow straight through. While we might call this bullet failure, in Africa shoulder shots are the norm so bullets must be tough enough to stay together and penetrate all the way through. So it boils down to what you are going to use the gun for. These two loads are good for large game and bear defense. For deer, use lighter weight JHP bullets to ensure expansion.

The most important thing to remember is these rounds are designed for different performance in different tissue than defensive rounds. Clear gel provides questionably representative test results with defensive bullets. Maybe this is even more of a factor with rounds designed for other animal tissues?
@ToolsandTargets Жыл бұрын
Been plenty of soft point "hunting" rounds that did great in this gel. The test medium is really irrelevant when comparing bullets, as long as the test is kept consistent for the different rounds.
@v73133 Жыл бұрын
@@ToolsandTargets I don't disagree that test medium is less important when comparing multiples against each other, provided the medium is an effective substitute. In this case the gel is being used as a substitute to evaluate how bullets would perform in organic, largely water based, tissues. Having neither the water content or physical properties of organic tissues, Clear ballistics just doesn't accurately do that. I'm merely suggesting a high likelihood that results in an animal or even organic gel would be measurably different.

This is a test I'd like to see in bare gel. Even though some animals wear a fairly heavy coat, I've never seen hair clog a hollow point. Which is essentially what this ammo is. Shallow as it may be, it has a hollow cavity. I'd be willing to bet these bullets expand at this velocity in bare gel! This is a subject I have a lot of interest in. I've done a decent amount of velocity testing between .357 and 10mm. I always tried to match bullet weight as close as possible which in most cases was very close. I also have the good fortune of having a 6" barrel for my Coonan .357(closed breach takes barrel/cylinder gap out of the equation) and I also own an AMT Javelina 7" 10mm. So the 10 has a 1" advantage in barrel length. And even so the .357 iirc still beats the 10mm by a slight margin in every weight. I would have to dig through 100's of pages of old notes (which are packed away) for specific velocities. I do however remember with 100% certainty the bullet weights tested .357---10mm 125gr. 135gr 158gr. 155gr 180gr. 180gr 200gr. 200gr I'm a huge 10mm guy and love it! I believe it is the best readily available semi auto service caliber available. And at the same time I think the .357 is the absolute best all around handgun caliber ever invented. They're damn near revolver/semi auto versions of one another performance wise. And let's not forget that the .357 has(to a slightly lesser extent) suffered from the same reduced/weak commercial loads the 10mm has. The original Remington spec for the .357 was a 158gr lswc @1500 fps! You're lucky today to find a 125gr load that can achieve that from a 6" revolver! And it accomplished this with the disadvantage of a barrel cylinder gap. In the closed breach of the Coonan I regularly see 100-150fps increase over a 6" S&W 586. Some loads close to +200fps. All this testing was done with the hottest commercial ammunition from the same 2 manufacturers, Buffalo Bore and Underwood and each weight was from the same manufacturer in both calibers. As I said I don't remember specific numbers from most of the loads off the top of my head, but Underwood 125gr .357 load broke 1700 fps from the 6" Coonan and the 135gr 10mm was well over 1600 from the 7" Javelina. The only other carryable/service sized handgun I own that can do that is a custom 1911 in .40 super. It beats the 10mm by 150+ fps with every bullet weight. As a side note, I'm almost 100% cert that that lower velocity last shot on the .357 is going to be an oversized throat. Very common in production revolvers. I'd bet if you measure the throats and number the chambers, you can shoot a 5 shot string from each individual chamber and find the largest one is considerably slower.

Both of these loads are for carbines/SBRs. That's why the bullets are so tough.

Both should be good candidates for 16 inch carbine barrels. I handload 158 grain Hornady XTP's and push them just over 1800 fps from a Ruger 77/357. No Deer yet, but I did flatten a Coyote at about 75 yards with that load. I'm betting the extra barrel length will add plenty of performance.

Some how I missed this one, and 10mm hunting rounds is what I am looking for right now. These might be good in the longer barrels, be interesting to see what your carbine does.👍
@wadelucero6461 Жыл бұрын
I love when you rant about 10mm your correct IMO it due to legal mumbo with the FBI standards and prosecutors argue in court normal people use 9mm for home defence and 10mm with bazooka ballistics are used for blowing people apart in glad your getting longer barrels this will prove what you been saying all along if we know every 10mm that failed your test would pass at 1400fps then bullet manufacturers have to know great videos 👍

Stick with a .357 , Underwoods 158 g XTP. I get 1550-1600 fps out of my 6.5" Blackhawk with great expansion out of a tough bullet. It just works everytime .

Great test and information as always. I don't hunt but i bet that either round wound stop a two legged predater. Good job my friend.

I’m surprised by the 10mm Fusion. I’ve tested this round extensively out of my G20 into bare gel. My test are at close range, within 5 yards, and I have gotten EXCELLENT and consistent expansion up to 0.7”. Every test had 100% weight retention and every single one was picture perfect expansion. I was shocked given it’s a soft point as it outperformed Buffalo Bore, HST and the super fast high energy loads from Underwood. Now I need to rethink my stance as I had switched to this round given it’s a bonded soft point and would be good through barriers. That’s WAY too much penetration and even though the permanent wound cavity on shot one looked pretty good, I will now stick with Buffalo Bore as it is outstanding.

Yeah, the velocity loss at distance really does change things. I'm very curious to see what these do from rifles now.

Its gun channels like this that got me hooked on KZbin. Most of those have turned into shows with bad comedy and guns I will most likley never get to touch. Your in my list with a a few names..Hickock 45, Paul Harrell, Rest in peace James Yeager, prayers sent for CRS sitting in Prison.

Those 357 velocities are really good I would really like to see it out of a 16” lever gun figuring that it has a fast burn powder to get that velocity out of a 4” and by 18-20” it may start slowing it down But in case you can’t tell I’m 357 fanboy
@cgsimons1187 Жыл бұрын
I'm looking forward to seeing these retested with longer barrels. I've yet to see a soft point in .357 Mag expand from a 4" barrel. Your 6" Colt Python might make the difference.

At the risk of having to do some serious tracking (due to possible failure to expand) I suspect both rounds would be well suited for hunting critters with relatively tough hides, such as large feral hogs, at handgun ranges. Otherwise, I would not put a lot of trust in either of them since I'm not convinced I could expect humane kills on game.
@TeensierPython Жыл бұрын
10mm works great on deer. You just need to use it within its limits. Don’t shoot past bow range. Don’t shoot quartering angles. I stopped using hollow points after a failure to expand on a perfect broadside. I use only soft point or hard cast lead now.
@davidreed3647 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for a good video. Federal Fusion seems to be a terrible round for any application. It over penetrates for a defensive round and under expands for a hunting load. Thanks for the info.

If you live in the sticks I'd use hunting ammo for home defense over specialty defensive rounds hunting rounds do serious damage and penetrate much farther possible through two people if needed

+1 on wondering how these would do from a rifle length barrel. That 357 load might be a good hunting load from a levergun.

I'm very curious how these will do in the longer barrels. You hit the nail on the head with what I was thinking if the cloth clogging them up had anything to do with them not opening, but on the other hand what a hide with thick hair might also do? Good test none the less. Have a good one brother see you on the next one.

Not sure why people consider lack of expansion a failure. We just about wiped out the all of the bison in this country with non-expanding bullets. Those flat points tear up quite a bit of tissue while penetrating deeply and typically in a straight line.

You would think that being a hunting round you would get something a bit more spicy. I guess they just don't load them like they did in the good old days. Big fan of a good .357

I don’t know how to post a picture on here. I’ve got one it the caliper with a renew round next to it for comparison. The caliper is at 0.723” It’s a picture perfect mushroom. Really surprised by these results. I’m guessing given it’s designed to be a hunting round, the denim caused it to not perform. Many people on midway’s website rate it 5 star and state it’s an excellent deer hunting round

I don't know enough about hunting to know if this is adequate for the job, but I'm definitely impressed to see the 357 that much more powerful than the 10mm. Thanks for the demonstration, Tools!
@pewpewTN Жыл бұрын
It's because the 10mm is too heavy for caliber. Lighter bullets will always have more energy if the powder charge is close. If the 10mm was a 155 grain, it would be more powerful than the .357

Not sure what to Think either there Tools. Probably needs a rifle/carbine length barrel to get the speed for the fusion to perform. Still a good test to see what goes on in the pistols. Kinda disappointed with the .357 Mag. It did the box speed and still did not expand. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. be safe. 🇺🇸🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸🇺🇸
