@@ShannonMakes I love the acrobatics too, but would highly suggest handing the power tool (or any tool) down to your partner first so they can put it down somewhere before you come down. It's always possible, no matter how good you are, that as you change position, a hand activates a tool, or you have to adjust a limb for balance and the tool becomes a dangerous weapon. There could even be something on the floor you don't notice that makes him move to adjust and keep his balance, which makes you adjust and, same thing. I saw a remodel show where someone had a proper ladder and set up everything correctly, but something unexpected made them fall, the tool in their hand was centimeters from literally taking their eye out. Just offering as a suggestion because we all want to see you safe.

A developer low bid my current house and was annoyed when I bought it on the cheap. Ditto my old 1912 house in Texas. By the time we cut all the trees back and removed rotted carpets... neighbors thought we put in 60 grand. Not. Sometimes you save not just a house, but a neighborhood. My mom took a small old house, and added a flowerbed. Suddenly the neighbors added flowers and started painting too. My 1912 house did the same.

When I found historic wallpaper in my 1878 house in the UK, I sent a sample to the Whitworth art Gallery in Manchester and they not only dated it for me as Festival of Britain (1950’s) but also kept the sample in their collection which I was overjoyed about. Someone else already suggested Christine McConnell, so I'll just double up here. However, you can also take pictures of your old wallpaper, digitize them, and get them printed for private use from a company like Spoonflower. I hate large developers. They ruin everything for the sake of profits. It's frankly disgusting. I also of am of the opinion that someone should not be able to own more than one residential property per county, no more than 10 per province, and houses that are already single family homes cannot be changed into duplexes or more. Large companies should not be allowed to own single family homes, and businesses shouldn't be taking up single homes unless the owners are also living in that home.
@ShannonMakes6 ай бұрын
Well on the first principle that large developers can be the worst, I tend to agree, they often are. My landlord in MTL, who owns many properties, is the meme of a classic, penny pinching, asshole scumbag of a landlord. However I am gonna disagree about single family homes being turned into duplexes - that's literally one perfect way to solve the housing crisis. By splitting it into two apartments, you're now allowing two (or more) families to live there, and helping the housing crisis.

As an owner of a house built around 1896ish, I have a very important piece of advise...always completely finish one room at a time. If you partially finish something and say"this will work for now", no. It will never be finished. I have lived in this house for 9 years. There is still a spot in the kitchen where you can't walk because of rot. The chimneys are not fixed so the fireplaces are still boarded shut. I still have no flooring at all in the master bath, only plywood subfloor. There is fiberglass bug screen stapled completely over all the windows because we never got around to making screens for those because 6ft tall x 2ft wide screens are not something you can just pop over to the hardware store and buy. We just recently started fixing the doors so they close properly and still we've only done three before a porcelain doorknob fell of and now we have to find one that matches the others. Just finish one room at a time before starting another one. It's the only way to keep your sanity.
@ShannonMakes6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately that is very much not an option for many reasons here in the house. Its true that there's no more permanent solution than a temporary one, but fortunately we've got plenty of time and motivation, and a drive for near-perfection, so I'm not too worried about it.

It makes me sad every time I think about it but I hope someone like you guys gets it and restores it properly. Oh Shannon, I appreciate running water and hot indoor plumbing so much. As an infant my family lived on an Aboriginal Mission (Reservation) in the desert of South Australia where the only water we had was shipped in. Mum, said she had to put enough water away for drinking and cooking. What was left, she washed by hand the laundry. That water was then used to mop the floors, then reused again to water the few vegetables and flowers she tried growing. When I lived in Thailand 42 years ago, I had to wash all the family wash, by hand squatting down at a big metal basin with a wooden wash board. Our bathing was done by slushing water over the body with bowl. The water was collected in concrete “tub” in the corner of the bathroom. The toilet was a squat Asian style version which you flushed by tipping water with the bowl. I love your corgi she is so endearing and entertaining. We got to enjoy a free circus show as a bonus today, this 62 year lady who has broken her back ( but with much hard work learned to walk again) is so jealous of your athletic abilities. ❤ I am so grateful for indoor plumbing. I loved my washing machine so much, it must be the best invention ever.

The floral wallpaper reminds me of 1910 reproduction wallpaper.

I was also thinking that wallpaper had a Victorian vibe. It would make sense, if the fashion was slower to arrive in that town, latest fashion paper was more expensive or whoever picked out the paper really loved that pattern. They also might have had the same paper in a previous home or even had leftover paper from a previous home.

@@hollywebster6844 wallpaper styles also tended to last longer due to the expense as well.💖

Thank goodness you saved the house!! You're right about the developer and it always breaks my heart when I see those old houses left to rot for so long that they are not salvageable. I also kills me to see a new build plunked in next to an old gem - with all of the planning permissions required I am stunned municipalities allows it.

I am so glad to see a young couple restore an old, old house. Previously I had said that you were brave to take it on…..but that was the 60 year old, tired me talking. My arthritis ( incidentally, from a performance career) and my years of trying to get several older houses restored and declutterred was telling my brain that this was too hard….but I was being selfish……I think it’s wonderful that two enthusiastic youngsters want to restore this beautiful house. It would be (in its restored state) a house I’d want to live in… we need more young passionate people like you and Phil to restore what is already built, rather than people like the developer guy looking to make quick bucks on a (probably inferior quality) new build after (possibly wasting resources) pulling down a serviceable (after renovation) house. Beauty is for keeping the old. 😂

Shannon. Absolutely LOVING the renovation/restoration content. Like most of your subscribers, I am so VERY pleased that you and Phil are working so diligently to bring this glorious lady "back to life"!! May I ask a totally un-related question? Is that a Kangaroo on your grey hoodie?!?! (As a "Down Under" subscriber, I have to admit that an Iconic Australian Marsupial was the LAST thing I was expecting to see on a Canadian Circus star, restoring a house is Nova Scotia!! LOL)

Yes, it is a kangaroo! Thrifted hoodie, the brand is something like "Kangol"

I feel your narrow doorway feels. I took the stops off our basement door frame (door having been removed and kept in the garage before I even bought the house) so we could get appliances and furniture up and down just a skosh easier. On the wallpaper and decor styles: I run a Theatre that was built in 1922. While it currently decorated in a way that is inspired by the 20s art deco, because it's in the midwest of the US and was built early in the 20s, there is basically no chance that the original decor style would have been that cutting edge for the time. It was built as a vaudeville house at the very tail end of that being a thing at all, and was converted to film very quickly, so it might have been more nouveau and then moved to a deco transition as they changed it over, but it's hard to tell. It's really easy to assume that everyone loved what we think of as the "current" style for a given year or time period, but decor styles move slowly, and personal tastes differ from the hot new thing. I suspect your house would have been decorated in the way that someone middle aged living in a smaller town at the time would have liked and had available, and that likely would have been a somewhat "dated" victorian look, maybe influenced somewhat by nouveau, but maybe not. I hope you get great input from wallpaper enthusiasts, I know Christine McConnell has reached out to some experts in the past while researching what she's found in her house.

You are so right! And it is the same with clothes/fashion. My one great grandmother was famously oldfashioned, and I have photos of her from the late 1930s where she wears clothes from the 1910s. No reason to update when you have perfectly servicable clothes plus she didn't like the "short" (below knee) skirts.

On a somewhat unrelated note, have you ever seen the Fox theater in Detroit (or any of the other Fox theaters by Howard Crane)?? They're absolutely stunning and wild... "Siamese Byzantine" style that looks like it came straight off a Jumanji board!!

I'm sure you've had (and still get) plenty of "why not just demolish/rip out the floor/plumbing/house and just replace it?!", but I really love that you're repairing this and even letting me live vicariously through you doing so. A lot of the world economics have moved on to encourage replacement over repair (yay capitalism /s) and we've already made so much excellent stuff that can just be repaired and updated!

I’ve been binging this series while ironing 4 yards of linen fabric (3 yards down, 1 to go). I love watching the neighborly bromance blossom! I relate so much with things being made for taller people, too. I’m just under 5’ tall with a long (average) torso and ridiculously short legs, so when I drive I have to put the front seat as far forward as it can possibly go. I seriously doubt that I would even be able to drive an American car. My boyfriend’s exercise bike doesn’t adjust short enough so I have to use a pillow or two to push myself forward, which makes the seat super short. And don’t get me started on chairs in general!

ooof the short person struggles! I'm not even *that* short, and I struggle, but I do have a friend that's just under 5' as well and it's rough for them!

I just love your videos, get so excited when I receive a notification. Yeah - on the water hook up! Very glad to hear you'll be devoting an area/wall to all the memorabilia you're finding in the house. Hope you save one of the radiators, can make a top for it to display items as well, and it's a part of the original house. I think the rads are pretty cool looking and would make great plant stands in many of the rooms, good energy to keep them. Love the lamp you scored, very beautiful. Interested in hearing about the neighboring houses that were torn down, that information and photos can also go on the memory wall. Question - have you considered giving the house a name with a cool plaque near the entrance? Sounds like a great neighbor!
