**mind blown** 🤯 obviously the cows LOVE it, training themselves, coming in out of rain if they like, taking moonlit strolls if they like, and getting free time on Christmas! You ALL deserve that! The time it would take to adjust them/you to the new system seems MORE than worth it.

Actually not in the beginning. Youll need to breed an fully robot adept cow herd. A percentage of the cows is just to lazy to go to the robots and another part has udders/teets that an robot wont eadily get that will lead to bad milked out cows and thus atibiotics usage to kerp them. Or eventually selling them to an parlour farmer who can milk them or put them up for slaughter sadly. We milk 210 dairy cows on both robots and milking parlour so we ould actually keep an track the cows in parlour that dont fit on the robots. Atleast 15 to 20% of our herd didnt really fit on the robots because of sad laziness or udders en teets that dont fit well. Aswell as new heifers that dont want to set a hoof in them and are just perfectly fine milking in the parlour.

Tom it’s great that there are people pushing the technology envelope further but still having animals welfare at the heart of their set up. This setup would be great when you and Jo have little Tommy and Tombalina running about. You certainly have a better work/life balance with this set up.

Great video. If you’re considering a parlour, go for a 16 unit parlour minimum. It’ll cost a bit more but make love so much easier. Gives room for expansion and you’ll have 110 cows milked And wash down done in an hour with the right set up. You’re thinking too small with 12 unit.

The herd health and data aspects of using the robots will easily pay for the robots, especially when faced with the need to build a new parlour. The labour savings are also not insignificant.

LOVE automation - what is apparent is humanity keeps growing; a farmer only has 100% of his time to devote to his job to produce the best product he can. If you eliminate parts of this Time Pie, it opens the door to a better life for him and focus on the rest of what needs to get done like flying Drones and editing video :D

That was a brilliant insight into how that robot system works (including the paddock system). I've always been a parlor person due to the lack of understanding how a robot system works but now seeing this I think it's the way to go a specially for the wellbeing of the cow themselves. I'd love to see more of the robot systems in another video if possible. 👍👍

As an ex Herdsman of the 1980s I absolutely loved this, its amazing how much technology has moved on it seems to me to be the way to go, you have put so much effort into animal welfare with the new shed this seems to be the next logical step for increased animal welfare on your farm and it would give you all a better work life balance with everything else you have on the farm. I must admit my main concern with robots when they first come out was the cows welfare and the Herdsman missing things when he wasn't milking them himself but I can see now with all the technology that's absolutely not an issue and is in fact a benefit as things like ecoli are being picked up even earlier by the temperature sensors and movement tracking I would say go for it Tom

👍👍. If you're really considering robot milking, a feedmixer is the way to go. There's no selection, which is important because every cow has her own rythm if that makes any sense. Very nice looking farm

Hi Tom, great video. That ABC system works well over here in New Zealand for the robot system but you'll find the biggest problem is hitting your residual grass covers. Unless you intend to regrass 10% of your dairy platform every year, you'll struggle to have quality grass further down the line. All in all though, great video

Cow Scout is awesome. Run it along a Gea herringbone parlour. Having access to your herd 24/7 for both activity and rumination/eating times is great. Even my 7 year old is obsessed with watching cows on it 🙈. In between watching your videos that is..

When your deciding take in to consideration with parlor milking how much time a cow is doing what it has to do rather than what it wants to do. Example how long has the last cow that comes into the parlor stood on a yard waiting to be milked rather than eating or chilling in a cubicle. I think if you tried to think of all those scenarios of cows waiting Robots is the way to go. Another would be fast walking cows waiting for for the slow ones coming out of the field.

City boy myself but spent many a summer on my cousins farm in limerick... you should defo go this way. We all love the channel and Id defo have no probs donating via patreon as i know initial costs huge to bring in robots. Less time milking gives you and the ginger lad more time for other projects and also use the farm crew to work on other jobs also...I know you have mixed feelings on patreon or donations in general but we appreciate the work and love the content so its our way of saying thanks :) slainte

If you did decide to go down the robot route then you might want to consider a pasteurisation system that pasteurised the milk from each cow separately and then bottled it with the cows name on the bottle. I know a dairy farmer in Holland who is doing it. Wow oh so impressive.

How many cows per Robot? Are there variations on the robot if you have a wide variety of cow breeds? Is there a positive health impact for cows that get to milk when they choose? What kind of financial investment is the robot? Seems like it would be sooo much simpler for maintenance vs the big equipment heavy parlors. What is their collection system like? Ok, I think I’m done. Ha. You asked for questions. This was one of the most fascinating vlogs I’ve seen in a while and I don’t have cows. If you have the footage I’d really love to see the robot in action from the cow walking in to walking out. Thanks for sharing this. I love being able to teach my kids about all the steps that bring food to the house.

Cows per robot is important but we look at the yield that can be harvested each day and this will depend on the cow’s breed, feeding and health. There is a positive health factor to cows being milked more often and also their stress levels are lowered, cows are generally very relaxed and calm in a robotic milking system.

Total amazed at the whole setup and the amount of information you can get from the robot system I can see lots of plus sides to it for definite. The way the grazing is all worked out and the way the cows take to it is just unreal, has to be the way forward for maximising output and cow comfort and health. I know if I was a dairy farmer I’d definitely be swaying more towards a robot system then parlour great video Tom 👍🏾

Automation is the way forward, gives the farmer more time to spend doing other tasks, it's the weigh up between cost to install/maintain versus time saved not having to do it manually. The girls seem to like it and take to it naturally and it's looks so clean.

Excellent and informative video and what a setup, extremely impressed and a big thank you to your hosts. Goes to show you can adapt existing buildings for a robot. The best bit is you are not tied to the cows tail in a regimented way but have a lot of cow data to hand without consuming a lot of time with the herd this equals money/profit. This allows for energy and time to be spent managing the grass swards which in turn maximizes the efficiently of the operation and other duties either business or pleasure. If it were me it'll be a robot all the way.

That was fascinating, the ‘nerdy’ side is so interesting. I think this kind of system could work on your farm Tom, I’m mentally planning it out for you and I’ve no idea where all your grazing paddocks are in relation to your buildings😂 I much prefer to see cattle out in fields with the sun on their backs and I’m sure it does them good physically and probably mentally too. I thought that robot milking meant zero grazing so this method is good

You can combine grazing and robotmilking perfectly Tom, ours spend around 10 hours outside like just like when we were milking 'normally'

Possibly, but I can’t see all dairy farms able to do so. Some farms may not see it as financially viable others just may not have suitable land or space. The big dairy farm in my village is working up to having about 400 milkers, as it’s a closed herd they are raising their own. The farm is organic and cows are out most of the year until it gets too wet and cold. Although they have the room to expand with buildings I can imagine land usage may be their biggest difficulty as the cattle have to cross roads for several of their fields. I feel they aren’t inclined to have the cows in housing for 24hours at the moment although this may change as the farm is in the process of being handed over to the next generation.

I realize you tend to call these robots, but I call them automated machines simply because they are only suited for one task and cannot be adapted for anything else. These automated machines care much like a multi-purpose ATM that can provide funds out of an account, sell tickets for a show or game, but in the end they are not doing more than cleaning, milking and computing the results. Whereas true robots that may be stationary or mobile can be tasked with varying jobs and adapted by tooling, attachments and programing. It is the first step in dairy farming automation and I think the future holds promise for technology in these environments. Excellent video!

I grew up in farm country in the late 60's and into the 70's in Southwest Pennsylvania USA. In the 80's and 90's most farmers were in their 70's and retired, and sold the farm to housing development. UGH!! With all the work required for manual milking, I personally would go with robots in a heart beat. There were semi-automatic milkers in the 90's in the area here, and the technology has improved dramatically since. I am sure that once you wrap your brain around the concept and the process, you will go that route too! I really like that each teet is milked individually. Much better for the cows! Good luck!!

I watched a video a few yrs back abt the robotic milking system. It is so cool. 1 system I watched the cow's got their hooves washed, their bag/teats washed/brushed & after being milked dipped, some could be fed while being milked. It was just so cool. I love the option that the cow's have to go be milked when they want vs the farmer. Better option.

I have never been a fan of confinement. Although we had to put up the cows in the winter because of the cold winters in Minnesota I always love to let them out in the spring. We didn’t have a a loafing barn or anything fancy was just a barn and each cow was in her own stall. Was years ago and most everyone milking around us had the same setup.

This is fabulous dairy farming. I grew p in a very small alpine farming community, spent all my free time at the farm, but its a very different climate - cows we're indoors all winter, and the first day they were allowed back out, ut was a major celebration from the cows, bless them. Of course milking was all done manually. All hands on deck - teats, actually, very early in the morning. In Summer the cows would migrate up the mountains and pretty much free range, eating meadow grass and flowers. You could actually taste the flowers in the milk. Happy memories.
