Regardless of how much this sounds like a distressed insect in flight across the moroccan desert. It seems like a good idea to practice these songs without distortion just because of how much distortion can hide poor technique. This guy is playing these parts flawlessly. The clean tone wouldn't let you hide behind aggression and force, you have to play it right.

Depends on the amp/setup while some amps hide your mistakes others highlight them and I think its very important to play it first with high gain and then play with a clean tone because you dont really have to think much about muting strings and noise control when youre playing with low gain

Also some pre electric headbangers were Mozart and Bach. Then listen to some metal guitarists like Alex Skolnik, John Petrucci, and Herman Li. I guess the connection is the application of music theory and being bored singing and playing the same tired old tunes decade after decade, so they did something different and we liked it?

It's very easy for some metal guitarists to curb their sloppiness with the distortion. It's by playing clean that you can really show off your skills. You have great articulation and such a transparent picking technique, I give you props for that! 👏🏽

I never understood this take. If you play sloppy with distortion on, your mistakes are literally amplified. Improper muting and sloppy picking technique definitely pops out way more with distortion on rather than off. Now wah wah, you may have an argument there.

@@themightymcb7310 Picking articulation (alternate and sweep picking, for example) can be really masked with hi-gain. A guitar player with a better technique will sound awesome, but the thing is that some sloppy players with high distortion (and maybe some modulation like phaser or wah-wah, as you mentioned) won't sound spectacular, but they can sound better than they actually are

Absolutely beautiful and interesting sound. As a metal fan and someone who likes to spread there word of Rock N Roll I think can both expand a metalhead musical horizon and help non rock N Roll / Metal fans get into it.

He has recently expressed interest in learning other guitar styles and techniques to help elevate his own playing and songwriting skills, and this really illustrates some of the discussions we've had about classical and world music progressions influencing the progressions used in metal.
