Regardless of how much this sounds like a distressed insect in flight across the moroccan desert. It seems like a good idea to practice these songs without distortion just because of how much distortion can hide poor technique. This guy is playing these parts flawlessly. The clean tone wouldn't let you hide behind aggression and force, you have to play it right.

Depends on the amp/setup while some amps hide your mistakes others highlight them and I think its very important to play it first with high gain and then play with a clean tone because you dont really have to think much about muting strings and noise control when youre playing with low gain

@@inthestorm2002 rather than ask someone to explain it why not just listen. Check out Paganini, he wrote a number of caprices, my favorite is Caprice 24. Also some pre electric headbangers were Mozart and Bach. Then listen to some metal guitarists like Alex Skolnik, John Petrucci, and Herman Li. I guess the connection is the application of music theory and being bored singing and playing the same tired old tunes decade after decade, so they did something different and we liked it?

I showed this to a friend and they asked “why can’t it always sound like this? Why all the yelling, crashing drums?” I asked him if he would listen to this if there was no yelling or loud blasting drums, and he said no. I told him that’s exactly why.

Playing metal clean is actually pretty relaxing to me. Super fun to watch you play this stuff too. Quite inspiring.
@david-eler
@david-eler 4 жыл бұрын
It's very easy for some metal guitarists to curb their sloppiness with the distortion. It's by playing clean that you can really show off your skills. You have great articulation and such a transparent picking technique, I give you props for that! 👏🏽
@themightymcb7310
@themightymcb7310 4 жыл бұрын
I never understood this take. If you play sloppy with distortion on, your mistakes are literally amplified. Improper muting and sloppy picking technique definitely pops out way more with distortion on rather than off. Now wah wah, you may have an argument there.
@david-eler
@david-eler 4 жыл бұрын
@@themightymcb7310 Picking articulation (alternate and sweep picking, for example) can be really masked with hi-gain. A guitar player with a better technique will sound awesome, but the thing is that some sloppy players with high distortion (and maybe some modulation like phaser or wah-wah, as you mentioned) won't sound spectacular, but they can sound better than they actually are

This was super cool. Shared it with my thrash-loving, guitar-playing 16yo. He has recently expressed interest in learning other guitar styles and techniques to help elevate his own playing and songwriting skills, and this really illustrates some of the discussions we've had about classical and world music progressions influencing the progressions used in metal.
