Great podcast! It's really the only place we can get x's and o's knowledge...especially for the Hawk fans who understand the game. Many years ago, I coached football and other sports at the high school level and it is refreshing to listen to knowledgeable analysis. My only hope for 2024 is Deacon Hill does no make the field. Great analysis guys! Really enjoy your show! Interested in what the marriage of KF and Lester offenses will look like, but am happy we brought in a modern mind. Regardless what it looks like, I’m optimistic we got a guy that understands taking advantage of defenses weaknesses, but also the development of a short pass game. Iowa has made offense looks sooo hard. Even passes behind the line or short passes, have felt so slow developing. We hear about short passes being an extension of the run game. And Iowa under BF has been bad in that area.

Lastly, I appreciated your Tim Lester conversation. I was one of those that first said ho no!!! I feel better about TL as OC now. It appeared to me that Brian's coaching style was we are running it until we get it right type -- arrogant thinking (usually this style of coaching just destroys a player's confidence if it does not work especially when Iowa did not have superior offensive line talent). The announcers would summarize an opponent's weaknesses and it appeared to me that the offense did not try to exploit those weaknesses (example, go after a freshman corner). We would simply run our plays regardless of the what the opponent's defense was doing. (NO IMAGINATION) I hope Lester will game plan to exploit the opposition's weaknesses like all other teams do. I was sick of hearing Brian saying the we lining up showing run and we are letting the opposition know that we are running the ball and challenge the opposition to stop us (total BS). The Big Ten has good players and that thinking is STUPID! (It may have validity late 4th quarter and the opposition's defensive line is tired.) I also hope Lester's offense can put pressure on the opposition's offense and defense. What I am saying is the opposition knows Iowa is going to score points today you need to stop them on defense and the opposition's offense needs to take risks to compete on the scoreboard. Hopefully, Iowa has a balanced attack (Keep KF happy).

Great work gentlemen. I love your podcast - has become my favorite. Great passion, level-headed analysis based on what happens on the field and not your typical "Brian sucks" commentary. One thing I heard that I wasn't a fan of though. You are planning less Hawkeye content and more Big Ten talk? That's no bueno. Less Hawkeye discussion is never better than more Hawkeye discussion. If anything, add a B1G podcast but don't cut down to what made this great. :)

Another question: Last season announcers do not say much about Nwankpa. While watching games, he is in on the tackle or close almost every time (he appeared to be charging hard to support the run). He made some big big hits (an advantage he has with his size). It did not appear from watching on TV (which is a limited view regarding a passing attack) teams threw the ball in his area (not challenged much). It was obvious last season teams avoided throwing at Cooper and if they did it was mostly come back routes. How did you guys view Nwankpa first full season on the field? Also, what would you expect seeing from him with a full season of experience (2024)?
@TheANFPodcast
@TheANFPodcast 5 ай бұрын
He had a great season for a first year starter. Always a good thing when you don’t notice a safety during a television broadcast - generally means their doing their job well or the front 7 is playing very well. He made that incredible interception against USU in the first game and I think teams avoided him the rest of the season - similar to Cooper. For 2024, he needs to take that next step in the playmaking department. Geno Stone made that same leap and starting to force more fumbles in his last year at Iowa.

One of the biggest things to me with RPO is that it streamlines decision making. I really think Iowa coaches QBs to make the absolute best decision. But that is not always the best way to make decisions particularly when there is time pressure. A lot of offenses aren't looking for the best decision you want the QB to take the first satisfactory option.

“Ferenz needs to give him the keys…”. This is the answer. A basic tenet of a successful organization is it hires the best person and that person executes in their wheelhouse, without interference from above. Kirk should know that from Good to Great.

You requested some feedback, so I wanted to share a few thoughts. Firstly, I really enjoyed the podcast and appreciated the in-depth exploration of game strategies, as opposed to just quick reaction videos. Kudos on that front. I got a good chuckle when you mentioned Albernett-I actually hail from Center Point over 40 years ago and have spent quite a bit of time in Albernett myself. Regarding the podcast's audio quality, it's decent but could be improved. There's a slight hollow sound to it. Have you considered hanging some sound-deadening blankets just off-camera? Additionally, placing something on the back wall could help. Many KZbinrs opt for bookshelves, not just for aesthetics but also to diffuse sound. This prevents a straight reflective line for the sound to travel. This can also be achieved with various items like plants, knick-knacks, or anything to break the line.

I didn't use to advocate for paying college players, but with the introduction of NIL and the transfer portal, it seems inevitable. These young athletes are sacrificing their bodies for our entertainment, and it's time they receive compensation. So, let's explore a hypothetical scenario: How would we go about compensating college athletes in a fair and structured manner? I recall reading an article about a decade ago that referenced the NFL collective bargaining agreement, suggesting that a starter for Iowa could potentially earn around $500K. Given the changes in the landscape since then, this figure is likely even higher today. However, a significant challenge lies in addressing the longstanding disparity between powerhouse programs like Ohio State and Michigan, and smaller schools like Indiana and Illinois. To maintain competitiveness while leveling the playing field, one solution could be to implement a draft system similar to the NFL's. This would help distribute talent more evenly across teams, ensuring that every program has a chance to thrive. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this issue and how you would approach it. It's a complex topic with no easy answers, but exploring different perspectives can help shed light on potential solutions.@@TheANFPodcast

I have noticed that over past few seasons that Phil Parker has put a faster defense on the field and it appears that speed has made the defense better. Years ago it seemed Iowa's defense could not stop late 4th quarter opponent offensive drives or second half come backs and Parker was the DC. What do you think? Unfortunately, the offense appears to have not increased its speed?

Definitely. Nick Jackson is one of the most athletic WLBs we’ve had under Phil. And our D-Ends were quicker than usual too, mainly because they were undersized.

@TheANFPodcast
@TheANFPodcast 5 ай бұрын
Resnar can really run, so Lester will put him in a lot of QB option reads where he has a chance to keep the ball and run. We’re a little worried about Resnar’s passing ability, luckily Lester’s RPO system is QB friendly.

I’ve never understood Iowa coaches talking about QB arm strength being sought after. In recent memory we’ve either not had time to throw deep or had no WR separation deep, and usually it’s both.
@TheANFPodcast

Kirk sees the ability to throw deep as a benefit to the run (lighter boxes). Now whether any team has actually respected that possibility in the last 5 seasons is another question.

I think Proctor is LT and Richman slides into LG. It still honors the 3 years Richman has started on the left side, but also realistically gives him the best chance to get guard reps before jumping to the NFL. Guard is likely his best chance at that.
