On Wednesday, 4,000 Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga, Tennessee, begin voting in a closely watched election on whether to organize with the United Auto Workers in what could be the union’s first big victory as they try to expand into the southern United States after huge contract wins in 2023 with Detroit companies General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. Journalist Hamilton Nolan argues this is “probably the most important union election that this country has seen in years,” as unions attempt to challenge southern states’ economic policy of creating cheap, exploited labor to attract major corporations. “The South is really funneling money to international corporations for free, and the UAW is trying to put an end to that.”

As a German I never understood why unions aren't really a thing in the USA. Here in Germany it's totally normal and both unions and enterprise owners cooperate for the long-term profitability and sustainability of a company. Perhaps that's the USAs economys biggest weakness, the complete focus on the next quarter (rather than the long term).

The Labor movement in the U.S. was decimated at the start of the Cold War with the adoption of the Taft-Hartley Act and the beginning of the second Red Scare.

It's a difficult economic environment only because greedy corporations are making it so. The south is incredibly poor because they are constantly shooting themselves in the foot. Politicians work hard to keep us poor and convince all southerners that anything in your best interest is immoral, un-Christian, un-American, etc. And the voters buy it and keep the south from growing and southern workers, especially the older people, take pride in it. I've seen so many people act like being taken advantage of by your bosses is a badge of honor.

78 Billion profit in 3 years and workers are struggling? German Corporate CEOs should be ashamed. Unionize no matter the outcome . If you're fired seek employment elsewhere. Their probably gonna put more robotics soon anyway . People being treated this way is reprehensible.

Chattanooga was where i was born I came out west in the late 90s hope to stay out here for life. Chattanooga was a great place yo grow up but unless your rich it sucks.

I’m 72 years old. My grandfather on my mother’s side of the family was an engineer when he lived in moline Illinois. He was a union organizer and he was blacklisted because of his union activities. So, his family had to move to Milwaukee Wisconsin a town that was more socialist and labor unions were more welcome there.

Wow the first time since they were burned to the ground from Sherman. So the south has been agricultural but for the last 30 yrs and unions exclude agricultural, independent contractors,supervisors and those in managerial roles. Also the southern states have always had “right to work” laws which prohibit unions from charging dues to non union members (which was happening). It’s not just southern states that support this law.
