I have a pretty good idea. It's because these people belong to a relatively small clique and stand to benefit from being able to interact with one another in the future. Something very similar to this game is a military drill, where people aren't asked to solve complex problems individually but are rather expected to immediately obey simple commands without question and not mess around. Why is it that people can work together in some of these contexts and not in others? Because in some of them their actions have lasting social consequences. If you're interacting with a group while anonymous or with people you'll never see again, you can "get away" with a lot, and that's a meaningful test of character (because some people choose to cooperate even when they could get away with not doing so). It's quite amazing what is going on psychologically and socially behind the scenes even with such a simple event...
