Because the specific weight of carbon steel is very similar to iron, which is roughly 7 gr/cm³, while pure tungsten would be roughly 19 gr/cm³. I'd estimate the diameter of that sphere sans spikes to be roughly one meter, with 4/3*pi*r³ for the cubic volume of a sphere. Thus at 50 cm for r that would give roughly 3 600 000 grams, or roughly 3.6 tons for a solid steel ball of carbon steel. With tungsten that would weigh almost 10 tons. But my estimates could be off by quite a margin, so dealing with cubes of radii instantly changes the weights.

I'm not sure physics does say they'd be okay. It'd be very easy for one of them to over-commit to a throw, slip, and get hit. Something could also easily get launched into them (a broken spike, rocks, debris, etc etc.). They really do seem to play it fast and loose with safety in general on the channel.
