Nothing like the classic Detroit intake valve recession

If the mechanic recommends at 50K miles. I say do it. This will definitely help you, especially if there are any warranty issues in the future. Last thing you want is warranty to be denied. Every mechanic is different, so I say have it done.

Hi thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. It has helped me a lot. I have a question hope you can help me I’ve been doing engine swaps on some dd15 and 13 that have locked up. I change mains rods oil pump and oil manifold along with pick up tubes. Is their anything else you would recommend it seems after few weeks they come back with fuel system problems and air pump issues. What’s your thought. Again thank you

@@CarlosDieselElectric I end up with metal shavings in the fuel filter which in turn contaminates injectors and fuel rail. I was wondering if I should flush the whole engine?
@Thedieseltechpro8 ай бұрын
The metal in the fuel is from the fuel pump.The fuel pump is fuel lubricated.At this point according to Detroit specs you’ll need to replace the whole fuel system because it’s contaminated with fuel and flushing fuel tanks and davco fuel filter.Nothing else will need to be replaced but the fuel system

I had one of those high pressure fuel lines split while driving once. I had reused them after replacing the fuel pump. Don't do it. If you can't get replacements I would not take the old ones off.

What is a good criteria to decide when to look at valve adjustments?
@mike516210 ай бұрын
That’s a temporary fix. The valves are getting beat up into the seats and the valve recession is already in excess. He’s going to be back for a new head.
@CarlosDieselElectric10 ай бұрын
You are 100% correct, definitely a temporary fix. The cylinder head has to be replaced, the other issue the customer encountered is the fuel lines from the pump to rail are on national back order. These are one and done. So you run the risk if they are reused, they can leak.
@mike516210 ай бұрын
@@CarlosDieselElectric gen 5 pump to rail lines were a problem awhile back but it seems to have been resolved. At least in the Chicago area. We had to reuse them for a while to verify repairs but 2-3 weeks later the lines came in and we would replace them and run a regen and let it go. The metal in fuel problems from high pressure fuel pumps has tapered off a lot. Not sure why.

@CarlosDieselElectric5 ай бұрын
@@alexanderanderson8878 the line the comes off of the air compressor goes to the air filter housing. Not the discharge line but the other. That might cause a restriction. But I would look at carbon buildup in the lines.

Do a compression test to help verify the issue, this may help you identify the cylinder. Then if needed, perform valve adjustment.
@jorgefacio690 Жыл бұрын
so in theory if they are not all at 100 percent you have a reliable but weak engine?
@CarlosDieselElectric Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, I don't think I have ever had a engine with 100% compression across all six cylinders. So I wouldn't call it weak. IMO, anything with 90% or higher is good. Mileage, idle hours, injectors, all play a factor.
@nospam3001 Жыл бұрын
That test does not show stand alone ratings for each cylinder. It shows the strongest cylinder as 100% and each other cylinder as a percentage of the strongest cylinder. You could have reduced compression in all six cylinders and one of them would still show as 100% on this test. To get absolute compression ratings you have to do a mechanical compression test.

Do tune up tight valve
@CarlosDieselElectric8 ай бұрын
Every mechanic has a different style of adjusting valves. For me, I try to go more towards the loose end if the miles are higher or closer towards the 1 million miles
@CarlosDieselElectric8 ай бұрын
The valves will tighten up with normal wear. You want to prevent them from over tightening. When they are too tight, you will not allow the valves to open and close properly, more soot, unburned fuel.

Should compression test be done on a cold engine or should me first warm it up and then do the test?
@CarlosDieselElectric Жыл бұрын
I have done a compression test on a cold engine and warm engine just to compare. Sometimes on a warm engine the numbers are slightly better.
@mehdiraza85 Жыл бұрын
@@CarlosDieselElectric what if the numbers are signicantly different on warm engine as compared to cold and what are other signs of a bad cylinder head?
@CarlosDieselElectric Жыл бұрын
@@mehdiraza85 a bad cylinder head can have different signs. In this video, compression was the issue. In the beginning of the video the truck sounded like a train. There were no problems with coolant. After the valve adjustment the numbers improved. If the problem returns, then the cylinder head may have issues with the valve or valves. If blow by is present, then you most likely have a bad piston or piston ring. Trying to find out if the cylinder is bad would all depend on what the driver is reporting.
