I'm a farmer. If you want to have any chance of solving the challenges of sustainable agriculture, *make sure farmers have the money to afford what is needed to make this happen* . Supermarkets pay us the same for our produce as they paid us 12 years ago, while all costs from fertilizer to labor to electricity have increased dramatically. They take a HUGE mark-up and sell at many multiples higher price. They need to pay farmers A LOT more if we even stand a chance, for a hope, to a sustainable future.

In the U.S. lawns use more acres than any irrigated crop. People waste large amounts of money on water and fertilizer and pesticides, much of which will get washed off and cause algae blooms in nearby lakes. If we all had backyard gardens and useful food trees (instead of inedible ornamentals), that would be a giant step forward. Plus more butterflies and bees and birds.

I really believe farming should be taught and practiced in school as mandatory subjects so the people can understand the value of food and joy of growing eatables in their backyards. There is need to encourage people to grow garden and vegetables instead of lawns. I think it will help the nature as well as our mental health.

Hello from Argentina, i go to one, 11 hours a day, 5 days a week throgh 6 years. Final exam is to make a functional project about what you choose to specialize on, plants or animals. During the last year, the only subjects u have are the ones related to ur project, u don't graduate unless u make ur project functional, economically viable and it has to last at least a year. Here are some examples of what has been made until now Biodigester Aromatics Beer from barley Mead Cattle raising, born from insemination Hydroponics Whole year of production (pigs, hens, goats, cows, turkey, sheeps, chickens etc) It is really hard and tiring, most teens my age (17, 5th year) dont even think about the impact farming does to the enviroment. And is actually sad to see that from 300 teens that attend to it nearly ten are able to graduate each year. The video above, it is interesting but does not show near half of what it actually is. Thanks for reading this, hope to find more people that think it is necesary to start learning the farming methods. And sorry if i made a typo.

Agricultural revolution is required when their is shortage of food produced for the total number of people to be fed. Which is not the case; the food produced is surplus for the world's population. In India if for next two years farmers don't grow wheat then still the country's population can be fed through the buffer stock. So the problem is mismanagement of food. Food is in excess with some and they waste it. And many don't even have food to have a single meal a day. Another agricultural revolution might be required when world's population crosses 9 billion.

Hi from Poland. I also believe this is the correct way to produce food, but if you want to learn it, it's either expensive, difficult or both. There are recent great research about intercropping, many herbs haven't even been tested if useful as pesticides, there's lots of traditional knowledge which has been abandoned or forgotten - like how to mix different grains for more resilient crops, etc. Unfortunately this bits and pieces are not always organized and available, even though there's almost everything on the internet now. The point is that if you find it interesting or important, then it's on you to post it on YT, wikipedia or whatever.

@@Juan94766 it's possible. Like JFK once said "Our problems are man-made, therefore they may be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings." We really just need to find a way. I honestly believe that lots of progress is really going to be made when younger generations begin rising to power in politics. Since the upcoming generations have a different mindset and view of the world. Many of them lived in areas that are diverse meaning more acceptance to different cultures. I also already see many of the young generation protest against our government's method of handling several problems. So from what I see, the new generations are becoming more politically active and since there has been an increase of people going to college that also means that the will be more educationally aware. Of course we shouldn't wait for the younger generations and we should begin taking action now.

“Global cooperation” isn’t exactly what you need. Each growing zone is unique. Cooperating with those near your growing zone or those whose growing zone is only marginally different will be the best strategy. The tips that work in India may not be relevant to Idaho. I’ve tried to learn from other growers “globally.” And they don’t understand my growing conditions, so it has turned out that are very few places that are worth my time to consult with.

On the other hand, we need global cooperation as we intend to resolve the Climate Change in a Holistic manner. Yes, different practices are employed in the several agricultural areas in the world with various conditions that prevail in the areas and crops grown, thus, it shall begin locally and nationally. But the idea is how farmers are doing several sustainable practices in their own localities, which in turn, will promote food security while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Micro efforts become macro effects. Thus, global cooperation is needed for bigger impact.

Instead of putting money in developing chemical fertilizers and pesticides and thus destroying the land further, we use focus the ways the more yield is produced with very less damage. Most focus should be on making organic compost which will yield the nutrition of land. And for that better waste management can be implemented. The most important part is to find an alternative to beef. 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions are due to the production of beef and cheese. Deforestation's #1 cause is creating pastures (look at the amazon or the boreal forest). A truly green world is one where we don't eat a lot of beef. Without that, all of this is simply not the full picture. Sincerely, a meat loving chemist.

The key for the real second generation agriculture revolution is reaching small farmers and support them, doing revolution with big companies won't be real revolution, it will only destroy small farmers. So the solution is reaching small farmers and work with them, share with them, giving visions to them. And the most important is that not forgetting to touch the soil.

I am a controls and robotics engineer. And I grew up on a farm and I live in a rural agricultural area. Although this may scream sustainability doesn't scream the ability to actually control your produce. It lacks quality control. Along with that it doesn't deal with the fact that if you're allowing environment to stay natural, you have the inability to grow certain crops. This means they have to be trucked in. The way better off with some crops going to some sort of greenhouse type of system. A completely enclosed environment. A food factory. Can using vertical growing methods or stacking methods. I'm putting these factories as close to possible to distribution centers.

i think it might come but only for a small priviliged percentage of the world's population maybe, as it seems to require advanced technology. Big companies will eventually come to the point where even they have to think about sustainability as they can't make money off of dead land and they will have the financial power to develope and afford those technologies. I do agree though that the companies will only have the profit in mind and not feeding the world population. I could imagine that food prices might fall due to the higher production rates we might get from this while food waste might grow in parallel and none of the food will reach the poorer countries' populations in which these foods might grow. Even today we would be able to feed the world's population but we don't because the big companies don't see the profit in it.

I rarely see anyone talk about the biggest issue in environmental protection, sustainable agriculture, energy management, and carbon output, which is controlling population growth. Humans produce a huge carbon footprint and uncontrolled population growth puts an enormous strain on resources. No one seems to want to admit that reconsidering family size is a viable, free, immediate action that anyone can take to address climate change impact.
@MacNerfer
@MacNerfer 2 жыл бұрын
Population growth is slowing right now, will likely peak in about 20-30 years. Even if all women of child-bearing age agree that 1 or 2 kids is most desirable, the population will still grow for some time just because of the size of the 20-40 year old population world-wide right now. So no matter how we think about the global population, we will have to deal with 8 billion people real soon, and eventually 9 and maybe 10 billion. (Barring some large-scale disaster, which won't be good for endangered species anyway, since times of desperation lead to lawlessness, and starvation will lead to killing whatever animals people can find). I agree we have too many people, but the biggest impact we can have right now is lessening the effect that people already have. If everybody lived like Americans, we're in for trouble. But if we go for low-impact protein, GMOs where it makes sense (better yields without irrigation for instance), crop rotation, dual crops, carbon enrichment of the soil, smaller yards with a functioning garden or native plants, then we can have a positive impact on the world.
