On a more serious note, I sincerely worry that genetically modifying ourselves to be suited to other environments, might lead to the enslavement of our descendants to the unmodified class via GRM (Which is a play on DRM). I know that my genes will have to be modified to put my descendants into space, but they need to be ensured that THEY have the rights over THEIR OWN DNA and not some corporate patent holder.

well if we put a lid on the power and influence corporations have now we wont have to worry about our descendants being slaves and having the rights to their own DNA later.
@MogofWar
@MogofWar 8 жыл бұрын
H¥pΣr N¤vα The problem is, Corporations are literally impossible to put a lid on by the very nature of their existence. It's also impossible to meet the economic needs of a modern population without them. I.E. without legally incorporated corporations the guilds and covenants which form to meet the purpose they serve would become the new corporations. What is instead necessary is a Genetic Bill of Rights, stating that all organisms are owners in every gene they inherit. That corporations can own equipment and offer genetic services but cannot own the genes themselves.
@thevoiceofthelost
@thevoiceofthelost 8 жыл бұрын
Mog of War no it is possible to put a lid on them, there needs to be heavy regulation, and there needs to be a governmental system not influenced by money. money equals power, and as long as that remains true corporations will always equal corruption. corporations are and always have been double edged swords. we need to find a way to decrease the negative aspects without harming the positive ones. this is going to inevitably lead into the realm of politics since the two go hand and hand but for now lets not touch that, hypothetically speaking we cant have corporations acting as governments in the future of space colonization and such.we need to give corporations wiggle room, but not so much room that they break loose and wreak havoc across the planet, and especially not the galaxy if we last that long. they give us benefits, but they exist only to capitalize on something, they exist only to generate profits. we can not allow such an entity to influence the planetary governments. it must be government and citizens first, corporate entities second if at all. there will need to be a different economic system and a different governmental structure for this to happen. the ideal system is already here, but the problem is not many people are doing it. take denmark for example, they dont have any huge mega corporations, they function fine with small localized ones that compete with each other but otherwise stay out of politics. they are also one of the happiest places on earth currently. we would need a system like that if we wanted to make sure corporations dont bite us in the ass later. but just in case all else fails, a sort of genetic bill of rights wouldn't be a bad idea. it would definitely help stop the masses and corporations from seeing genetic humans as property. the problem is, just like the bill of rights here there will of course be corporations and governments who disagree and refuse to follow it. then there would have to be a central coalition to enforce those rights. which could become too powerful.. damned if you do damned if you dont.

A genetically modified human really is the best way to go for those headed out into space. Humans who are colonizing particular planets or moons would have modified characteristics that would make them much better suited. They would essentially be a different species over time. Kind of reminds me of the pair of finches that flew to the Galapagos islands and over time evolved into hundreds of species which filled every available ecological niche, all from the same original pair. Really cool stuff is on the horizon assuming we don't blow ourselves up first.

Finally someone addresses the topic of human augmentation in space travel. I can't find it anywhere else on the internet. However, I think mechanical augmentation is more likely and probably easier in the near future than genetic enhancement. It will mean we can survive in very harsh environments.
@phyrath5
@phyrath5 10 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I just left a comment stating that I would prefer mechanical alterations & pointed out that with biological alterations you'd likely just be able to adapt to one or two possibly habitable worlds while with mechanical alterations you'd just need to have a few parts recalibrated & you could switch from high to low gravity & back again if you wanted to. Also with extensive mechanical augmentation you could increase your odds of surviving an incident like a space suit breach or damage to the ship itself. A mostly mechanical body could be made to be vacuum & radiation resistant, probably not immune to it tho.

If we humans want to be futuristic stellar travellers, we are going to have to learn to accept things like genetic modification. Today's moral standards make that incredibly -iffy, and it will probably be quite a few decades before we (as a society) are open-minded enough to try it. I hope we see this kind of stuff in our time. I really do.

I wish you guys discussed the morality of the situation and the Theseus's paradox. At what point do we diverge into a new species. Do we treat humans with modifications differently. Can we do that to babies who haven't had a chance to choose for themselves. Is natural evolution safer or better than artificial evolution? these questions need to asked and discussed so we can prepare for the future. seems like these technologies are not question of if but when. love the show!

as of right now we are trying to figure out what genes do what. is it ethically right to alter a humans genes just so see what happens? would it be better if tested it on clones? are clones people? should we use humans as lab rats? if we don't what is another country does, wouldn't they have an advantage over us? i mean genetically identical humans fight each other based on our skin color, and our beliefs. what happens when we are genetically different?

I'm a fan of Aristotle and his golden mean. I don't think the answer lies in either of the extremes (such as building stuff to compensate for our weaknesses), or specializing(such as growing gills to cross the ocean). But in between. Let us enhance ourselves to make our current human platform(our body) superior, and then use our superior intelligence and strength to build even more marvelous constructions to ascend our specie into the stars!
@Bahamuttiamat
@Bahamuttiamat 10 жыл бұрын
SinerAthin lol superior? compared to what? most humans lack any kind of understanding what it means to be human. Ultimately we'll always be limited to our understanding of self. Foolish humans. ps. My comments was not meant to insult you in any way. It was just a thought i had floating around.

it sounds easy enough to do that..but the problem with that is time! it takes YEARS for a space travel (even for Mars it takes 1 year) maybe even millions of years actualy..and the human body can not stay at space for far too long without deteriorating..so they actualy try to do the first step to your idea...make "us" survive LONG enough for the actual travel..AFTER we can see what will take us there ;)

eli nope relay station in the exact middle sending out pairs of entangled particles (one in one direction one in the other) and a normal electromagnetic timepulse signal (to synchronize suff) at a specific time interval. sender puts in data by flipping the particles on his side (0 or 1) receiver just looks at his after. this would take a while to establish (have to wait until the first particles arrive at both ends) and would be very impracticle because all kinds of reasons, but it should work in principle... or am i missing something?

I can't help but notice that when we gaze out upon the universe, the number of genetically modified organisms inhabiting other planets appears to be approximately 0 so far. This leads me to believe that perhaps actually getting to these planets in the first place is a difficult problem. In any case, I think we would be better off focusing our gene modification research on more pressing issues here on earth, like disease for example.

Human beings and other animals are far too complicated to "print". It's not like after printing an organ using organic materials it will automatically start working. If we do manage printing a human or any animal it would be a lifeless vegetable essentially clinically dead on arrival. Resuscitation may be possible, but without knowing what makes us who we are there is no assurance what comes out on the other side of that system is going to be you. That is scary on a ton of different levels.

She wanted to pass it on to her kid and see her kid play with it and enjoy it as much as she did. Of course i didn't know what the doll was for, and i totally lied about knowing what happened to it (even though every one knows i have a terrible habit of thinking i know whats best and tossing out stuff i dont see a used for) and she got a different doll, one of those stupid 'Bratz' dolls. @Heropsychodream
@Heropsychodream 10 жыл бұрын
Anthropologist here, I can explain. During the "honeymoon phase," humans overlook each others flaws and become deeply attached because evolutionarily it works out to... surprise! make more babies. Your second question is equally important. After 3-4 years, we tend to lose interest and want to seek other mates because evolutionarily it is advantageous to have offspring with different genetics. Why does it trickle away in 3-4 years? After that long of time, offspring are pretty much able to start finding food and adapting socially to the group. Basically, we stay together long enough to see to it that our offspring become self-sufficient and we move on to the next love-of-our-life.

Not yeast in particular, but custom-engineered organisms are a chilling thought. You think viruses are a problem on the Internet? Wait until someone can design their own virus or bacteria at home and 3-D print it. And of course there's always the "grey goo" scenario, but with bio-engineered organisms instead of nanotech. What if you accidently make a bacteria that outcompetes algae and plankton, and it spreads everywhere? There goes most of the oxygen, and a collapse of the food chain. The possibilities for unintended consequences are enormous.

This is all super cool, I wonder though... if we were to "print" humans using 3d printers, wouldn't that be similar to cloning? and then wouldn't that raise similar ethical dilemmas as cloning. For example are those humans "real" humans or are they somehow lesser to other humans especially if we are using them to prepare planets for other humans to live on (which I assume is what they would be used for at least partially). Many science fiction books have explored these kinds of issues for example "The House of the Scorpion" and "Never Let Me Go" . I guess I just wonder if we could be trusted to treat future non-traditional humans fairly when we can barley even treat people groups that seem different to us now fairly (transgender folks, the LGBTQ community, people with different religious views, ect. for example)

this is a lie just plain rubbish first of all modifying the human gnome is not a new process micro biologists have been distorting Gods precious creation "humans" for the past 100 years combining the DNA from humans with everything from animals mammals, primates yes even food trees fish cows dogs goats frogs you name it they have messed with it why ? I will tell you to create the missing link which they need to prove evolution. but the truth is when they do make the claim that they have found the missing link it will be a farce created in a lab by scientists. you talk about God believers being ignorant saying we God believers are stupid to believe what they can not prove or even see "faith" yet evolution is being taught in our universities with out any visible fact or proof fact "missing link" is exactly that missing information. it takes more faith to believe in something that is based on missing information than it does to believe a Creator .that once you open your mind and heart too allowing him in will manifest himself immediately by communication and taking up root and dwell with you, Now back to the topic of modifying the human form to make it possible for humans to live in extreme conditions such as living on mars etc scientists "playing God" for the purpose of "distorting " I repeat destroying the perfect workings for our human form . . . modifying the human form ? be serious this is just plain dumb Humans were made in authority to rule the beasts of the land AND NOT to be mixed with them . Take a look around you !! this planet the universe we the people are a perfectly awesome creation all created in beauty and splendor Remember that God "our creator" creates beauty but scientist who do not believe in God are led by the spirit of anti god or anti Christ messing with the biospheres ( the natural Order) of this world is distorting Gods beauty but for the purpose of creating the missing link which they must do in order to pull off their evolution scam so they can fool people like you who do not have a relationship with the Creator. those who are like you that have not the spirit of the living God in them do not have the insight that believers have been given by God which comes through personal relation ship with the Creator I don't even know why I bother to explain things you are just plain stupid and do not have the tool which is needed to see the truth Good luck to you my friend I promise that you will live to regret yours stupidity on all of this. . .

Disappointing that when printing E. coli we do not actually create new cells, only print existing cells like a normal printer uses ink. You guys aren't misleading, my mind just went "wtf?" and had to research it further. Interesting all the same.

It makes me nervous. I keep getting afraid that some genes will become "fashionable" - like tattoos are now hot to modify your body then some day certain genes will be the in thing. People will then become a monoculture with no genetic diversity in key parts. This could make us vulnerable to things like one disease wiping out everyone.

Its probably a joke but he's right. I think we should genetically modify ourselves to be well suited on our own planet first. Pollution, radiation, etc. But more importantly, our life styles. Most of us don't go around hunting animals for food any more with spears. I have a 9 hour job sitting in front of a computer 5 days a week and its making me fat. What I'd give for genetically modified metabolism.

Or upload my consciousness to a machine, bionic, cybernetic, or genetically engineered body would be fine with me so long as I still have my mind I'm open to different bodies or modifications as long as it is worth while design. imagine having a sweet of sensors homed and tuned into your consciousness feeling the solar winds, seeing ultra violet and x-ray, listening to the symphony of the cosmos. Plug me in. I'm jealous of those future descendants that if we make that far will get to experience such things. Just put my mind in a living ship that can surf the cosmos. Imagine genetically engineering space whales that lives off solar radiation and consume space dust.

Humans survive just fine. Because of our massive brains we just survive in different ways in civilization instead of the jungle. Humans are one of the most adaptable creatures on this planet. Millions of years ago we came out of the jungle and began to build houses. If we had to go back into the jungle, we'd adapt. If we were to go to another planet, we'd adapt. Thats why when climbing mountains, we have to wait. Then our lungs and brains can adapt to the lack of oxygen and the cold. Thats why sherpas who live on mount everest can climb higher then a lot of humans, because they've adapted to living there. Instead of claws or wings or defensive scales, we have guns and planes and armor, which are even more effective. Animals don't usually attack humans, and we have no need for cockroach like evolutions. We are smart enough to make vaccines instead of having super immune systems, and even then we still have a decent immune system. Humans could live on alien planets.

I think I'd prefer mechanical alterations like those of the Star Wars character Qymaen jai Sheelal aka General Grievous (without the alterations made to his brain against his will). Grievous was shown to be resilient to the vacuum of space (& likely radiation as well), & mechanical limbs like Grievous' could likely be recalibrated so that he could move about efficiently on planets regardless of how low or great the gravity is. With biological adaptations an individual would likely only be able to adapt to one gravity & atmosphere type.
@pyromaniac407
@pyromaniac407 10 жыл бұрын
Realistically Grievous' wouldnt have survived long with the living bits still exposed also since he has biological parts, gravity would still effect his body high enough gravity and his biological bits would get squished and he'd die. As with radiationg that would kill any exposed bits. If he was completely contained that would be a slightly different story I suppose but still the biological parts make it not so useful

@phyrath5
@phyrath5 10 жыл бұрын
WiredPyro I did my research on General Grievous before posting that comment, the only part of his body that is biological & exposed are his eyes witch wear augmented to make them vacuum resistant. High enough gravity & altering humans to live there in any way would be futile. I think in total Grievous' eyes, brain, lungs, heart, & spinal cord are organic while the rest of him is mechanical. The lungs & heart could use some assistance in high-gravity environments but if the gravity is enough to put excessive strain on his brain I doubt any Earthling-like life form could inhabit the planet. Also I do not know the specifications of Grievous' mechanical parts but I'm pretty sure since he was originally suppose to be an enforcer IGBC they'd have built his mechanical body out of radiation resistant materials (that we probably don't have), after they broke is organic body when he tried to quit.
@pyromaniac407
@pyromaniac407 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah radiation resistant materials dont really exist unless his armour was about 4 feet deep all around. I feel like it would just be easier to be fully mechanical

I think as a species . Our future is amongst the stars . Its our respobsabilty as a sentient race to dwell in the far reaches of our universe . Maybe someday thru technology we will be like gods to other races of the univese , and hopefully we treat them kindly . Maybe we will turn out to be an aggressive race who knows . But surely we will either have modify our bodies . Most likely we will have to recreate ourselves as a new race to carry in our future amongst the stars ,that are adapted and designed for life on y most worlds and survive in the vacume if space as true space duelers . For the us we are domed to die in this world . Our future kin must not know death.

its gonna be like that twilight zone outer limits episode where we learn to clone humans, so instead of sending people across planets, which would cost a ton of money to do, we just send the genetic info of the human, and clone them, and then kill the original.
@SinerAthin
@SinerAthin 10 жыл бұрын

@millionairejh
@millionairejh 10 жыл бұрын
well in the episode, they killed the original, and the clone knew nothing about it. the clone thought it was the original that got teleported from the other planet. then there was this issue where the killing process failed, and the original lived but a clone was also made, so later on they had to tell the original what had happened, and they attempted to kill her

Really? I always assumed any travel beyond the moon would require enhanced humans. Probably a combo of bio-engineering, genetic engineering and full on cybernetic enhancements. We're entering a new phase of what it means to be human. Can you still call someone human if they are genetically engineered to be highly resistant to radiation, can regenerate, can switch from warm to cold-blooded and absorb chlorophyl from algae to produce energy like a plant, have an chitinous exoskeleton grown for them and have cybernetic eyes that can shift frequencies to see from low infrared all the way up to x-rays.
