1) The body of spark plug needs to touch the motor to spark. 2) If the bike does not want to start, do not open the throttle - you are just adding more air to a mixture which is most likely too lean. The motor started with started fluid = to lean. Most likely choke is not working correctly. 3) Stuff coming out of carbs is petrol. That means that the needle valve does not hold pressure and is overflowing the carb. This petrol goes to the crankcase and dilutes the oil. 4) Due to point 3 - please check oil level. If it is higher then when you parked the bike you will need to replace the oil. If the oil smells like petrol - you will need to replace the oil. Only 2 % content of petrol in oil increases friction by approx. 50%. If this confirms - don't run the engine with the old oil inside. 5) You will need to check the float valves at carbs. TheMotorcycleMD channel has a good video about this. Put the carbs up-side-down and apply small pressure with your mouth to the pipe that supplies petrol. If you hear any hiss - one or more valves need to be replaced. At this point I would order a set. 6) Adjust the float height (same TheMotorcycleMD has a good video) as it is very easy to mess up and most mechanics dont know how to do it. 7) When you leave a carb bike for more than 2-3 days, close the petrol supply (ex. pinch the vacuum hose to petcock) when the bike is running and let it burn all the fuel in carbs. Even if one needle valve does not hold, it will not bleed this petrol to oil. 8) When removing the carbs, heat the boots connecting carbs to engine block with a hair dryer. It will make them softer and avoid any damage as they are most likely quite old. 9) Please stop buying new parts at random :) Your ignition wires are fine if the bike ran well during Iceland or winter in Italy. They don't go bad overnight :)

Some of these things need repair manual. I am not a mechanic but haynes repair manuals make it clear. I have a 96 srad that i keep on the streets running still. Best of luck from Romania

Miles, your most important thing needed is a good Workshop (whb) manual for this model. It’s full of trade secrets and gets you into a rhythm of working methodically. Has the tank been cleaned? You can clean the carbs a thousand times and the jets can still get blocked. Petrol filter? A subscriber below has already mentioned the coils, they’re paired 1+4 as with 2+3. It’s a process of elimination. Good luck 👍🏽

100% I would get a workshop manual ASAP as it holds a lot of information for your model in particular. I went with the more expensive route on my TDM 850 4tx. I bought original mikuni carburetor rebuild kits with all the parts needed. Also a choke rebuild kit might be in order. In my case I am doing a complete overhaul for the bike. If you are on a budget I would go with fresh coils + leads, a good carb cleanup, fuel filter and choke setup/rebuild. Setup the carbs as instructed in the manual and you should be good. Looking forward to the next video.

It's always going to be the last thing that you (or anybody in the comments) thinks to check. That's always how these things go. The progress will be fun to watch and I'm interested in seeing you figure out what's causing this. A common recommendation is to check the coils and I agree with this. I had an issue once where I tore nearly the entire electrical system of a vehicle apart without thinking to check if the coils were actually good.
@lauraiss10279 ай бұрын
I know that everyone and their mom already said this, but also at 12:14 You answered it yourself. Just think about it a little - electricity goes where there's continuity, like ground or consumer. If you pick up a live electric wire it does not spark because electricity does not have where to go. It does not have to be the engine, you can touch outer part of plug with anything grounded. Even yourself if standing in puddle with bare feet or holding on water faucet, but that is not a pleasant experience, don't try that. Anyway, exciting video as usual and I love how you are not shy of not knowing stuff and don't pretend just because video.

Before ordering new coils, or wires. Check the ignition control unit. They have a tendency to get corrosion in the pins, and can give you dead cylinders. It is a black flat box at the rear end of the bike, you probably need to remove the plastic there to get access

there are 2 coil packs. First makes spark for cylinders 1 and 4, second makes spark for cylinder 2,3. When checking spark plugs, they have to touch the cylinder head, so they have ground. Be aware that sparks can spark ourside the engine but not in the engine. You can more easily check coil packs by taking spark wires out of the spark plug conector(in czechia we call it fajfka or faje) and keep them close to cylinder head. They will throw spark(be carefull and wear heavy rubber gloves, because it can throw spark in your hand). If the bike still runs on only 2 cylinders, try measuring the compression in cylinders. Valve seats can be mangled and leak, also it can be piston rings, but thats the worst case scenarion. For making sure the bike will run propperly, adjust the valve clearances. this is all easily done in garage. At these jobs you will be needing only feeler gauge, compression tester, screw drivers, spanners and lot of determination. Also you can download servis manual for this specific bike. If you need to I can send you one in PDF. Also sorry for english. Greetings from Czech republick

Hey, I have this same issue on XJ 900. Either check the coil if it has ground as it often get rusted and lose ground so clean it or the coil died. There are two coils, one for 1 and 4, second for 2 and 3. So if you have your inner piston running, the second coil might be dead. Replace it will be the best practice. As you are from Germany, ebay is your friend in this case. Hope it helps

Check sparks by grounding the plugs - touch the metal part to your engine case to ground it. Also, check your old plugs and see if they run lean, or they are dirty with oil/have visible carbon deposits. My guess it's that your carbs are way off and you are running too rich. Detailed view with your plugs might help a lot.

You've probably heard this already, but just in case; I'd recommend checking the ignition coils with a multimeter. The little caps that go on top of the sparkplugs lead to the coils; there should be one coil per two sparkplugs
@jaket53229 ай бұрын
As others said, you must touch the body of the spark plug on to the engine casing to see a spark. Prove you are getting a spark on the outer cylinders before going further. If you are getting a spark on the outer cylinders look to the carburetors. If you started the bike running on the middle 2 and you then sprayed the easy start into the intakes of the outer cylinders, does it then fire them? Also before trying to start the bike I would open the drain screw on each float bowl of the carburettor to see if there is actually fuel getting past the needle valve and into the float bowl. As far as I know the fuel from the jet is controlled by a vacuum diaphragm on each carburettor. The vacuum diaphragm lifts the needle out of the jet to give more fuel. Are the vacuum lines ok? They may be inside the throttle body though. I don’t have experience of the XJ600 but have had a few twins with carburettors (GPZ500 and TRX850) my current bikes are fuel injected (both rotax v60 engines). Nice video anyway, nice to see you on your travels but also nice to see a young guy getting his hands dirty and actually fixing a bike. I know you will sort it out, it really isn’t rocket science.

( And by the way being more organized and less swearing 🙂 helps too )

Sorry to just say this now, but it's only now that I discovered your channel. You need to buy the Haynes Manual which shows how to repair your motorcycle. I also have a very old and worn-out XJ 600N and it is this manual that I use to do the mechanical parts that I think I can do. My bike is now at the mechanic, also apparently with carburetor problems. And my motorcycle's carburetor has also been cleaned and tuned, but something continues to fail. You should also check your motorcycle’s valve clearance.

If it start with startpilot, but first and last cylinder doesn't work, with no spark on them (put the sparkler on metal like cylinder wings ) it is high possibly ignition coil: as you have two for 4 cylinders. To check you can exchange between them, or reverse sparkplug cap between cylinder 1 and 4 vs 2 an 3... And test then witch ones are cold now. That will tell you if it is the coil if it change. If no changes: open the carburetor one and for , you will see two gold color jets , it's a weak metal so pay attention to not put too much force..to remove those jets, wash them with vinegar and use electric cable filaments to put debris out of the hole of the jets (that is a gold screw with a specific size hole in it to adjust air Benzine ratio , sociometric...if there is stuff in it , cylinder will not pop...)

With that said I think you did make it clear that your outer cylinders aren't firering, so it might be a coil, but it can also be the ignition signal generation and paths. So if it has points then maybe they need to be rebuild and you should get a multimeter and a wirering diagram and check that all the wires that goes to the coils have continuity from the signal generation unit, weather that's points or a CDI box with VR sensors. You can also try to swap the coils and see if the problem follows the coil or stays
