Soooo...I thought the same with Brussels all of my gardening years as it's what I've always been told. The ones I planted for last winter are still thriving in my garden! Try it! My plant is currently around 4 feet-ish. And I live in the west texas desert! Yes sir! And you have to try those Brussel greens! I'm a South Louisiana born and raised and greens are just a staple, let me tell you, those Brussel greens smothered in a little bacon grease(but not in the summer) chefs kiss!

Good info, did the Brussel plants bolt in the summer heat? I have some planted for the first time
@mommypov495810 ай бұрын
@CrystalHelms-ku3kp they actually did not! They are still going strong! That's actually why I had left them, hoping for seed? Maybe? They only thing is the leaves(not sprouts) were not as good as cooler weather. Sprouts were still amazing!

Very good. I see a lot of home gardeners waste those outer leaves. They make great cabbage rolls(one of my most favorite foods on the planet :). They are good in casseroles, or as us Yankees call it...hot dish :). A good savory cabbage pie comes to mind. They are a little tougher than the heads usually and might require some blanching...so what, waste not want not right? They freeze well for whatever you might dream up to use them for. Rock solid info for your viewers, thanks Travis.

Hollis and Nancy does a start to finish videos. Nancy the one that puts it together and she said it’s more time consuming and harder. They show starting then 7-10 days later show harding off 3-5 days they plant then it may be 1 week than show 2-4 how they doing and depending on what video you watching could be like 2-3 months. They did one on a fruit tree and that was like 2 years up date. They the only ones I see that dose start to finish

Those brussel sprouts look so good. I started some Red Bull Brussel sprouts but I think mine are going to be more of a spring grown vegetable. It has been COLD here in Wrens, GA. We have had frost after frost. Everything I planted is just sitting there barely growing. The brussel sprouts are still in the greenhouse though and I will be happy if I get some this spring. Your cabbage and cauliflower look great too. Last year was the first time I ever grew cabbage that actually got a real head. I love our new place because it gets so much more sun and sandy soil instead of clay. Hoping for a few more cabbage (ones I started myself) this year and the broccoli and cauliflower are also still in the greenhouse. I love all your experiments, we all learn so much.

Like Mom always said, you have to try it before you can say you don’t like it. Certainly game to watch a start-to-finish video. That being said, I enjoy the multiple topics per video format … perhaps it’s my adult ADHD showing through! What I do know is how MUCH I’ve learned from you … think that would be the case regardless of the format. Plenty of room for both styles me thinks. Look forward to your videos continuing. Best for 2024 👍

I’m just going to let them grow through the winter and see if they get longer as the winter proceeds.
@UrbanWhiteBuffaloFarm10 ай бұрын
Hey Y’all, I love on the short videos when you have Brooklyn in the front of the short video she always says hey Trav I get a kick out of that FYI. Now, I like brussels sprouts but the white butterflies they will not come up off of them. They don’t matter what I do, so I just kind of quit growing them. I don’t have like a greenhouse or poly tunnel or anything like that. If they would attack one or two, and leave the rest alone I would do it, but they go after all of them and they don’t quit they don’t play. So now I’m gonna just grow broccolini because my wife loves broccolini. She won’t eat regular broccoli and a lot of the other brassicas I like them. We have a gigantic Hmong community in our area and they have a couple of giant plots and they divide them up into subplots so that each family has a place to farm. They have a couple shared tractors, and a few other shared pieces of equipment and they grow just a ton of vegetables and they go to all the farmers markets, but they have right down the road for me so I can just go down there and get anything I want whenever I want it, that’s pretty cool I just go knock on the door. Somebody will come out with it. It’s pretty fun because the older folks don’t speak English and there’s a child that’s four or five years old trying to interpret English for them. I would throw out a suggestion for people when I was trying to do the hot sauce that you made it was like you said in three separate videos, but I went into the KZbin and made a playlist and I put those three in the playlist and as part of the title I put the timestamp of the video in with the title. So whatever titles you had I would put the time 14 minutes and 44 seconds and that’s where you started talking about the hot sauce so I have to go around looking for it that helped me a lot and if I can help anybody else to give it a try I have some that’s over three or four channels with a couple videos because I like a little thing this one does I like something somebody else does and I just kind of marry them up and come out with what’s good for me. Trust me when you think I was only take me a second of going back-and-forth to find it. You may spend five minutes and pretty soon you might even have the right video and then you make yourself real crazy. Thanks for the video today God bless y’all take care, bye now

Clemson extension service doesn't recommend Spring planting of Brussel Sprouts up here. Fall planting dates are too late to get much of a yield except in the mildest Winters. I picked them from the bottom up as they sized up. I didn't know there was any other way. LOL They're just not worth the trouble for me.

I've tried growing brassicas for many years. Not much success as we are plagued with the dreaded cabbage moth. Last year, I tried covering my brassicas with insect netting. Inside the netting ended up looking like a butterfly farm. Sheesh!
@baconandeggs911310 ай бұрын
Get dr bronners Castile soap that is scent free. add 2 to 3 tablespoons for each gallon of water and thoroughly spray on. For extra power you can also purchase B.T bacterial spray. It is a spray made with naturally occurring bacteria within the soil. Dr bronners is also safe as it is Castile soap that is also biodegradable.Most brassicas have a protective bacterial layer that protects from frost because it’s used as an insulative layer. If you spray it well enough, that bacterial layer gets agitated and get washed off and will be ‘replaced’ by the soap solution. The bacterial layer will form again so it’ll be fine afterwards. Just maker sure you get the whole entirety of the plant. The base,stem,leaves and the Brussels sprouts. Make sure you get the undersides as well as that’s where bugs usually leave their eggs. If you have any hard shelled bug problems like squash bugs, you can use the same solution but add SURROUND kaolin clay. About 4 tbs. And apply on the leaves and even the fruit.
@baconandeggs911310 ай бұрын
Also reapply every couple of weeks or after it rains

The way I've been hearing it ... newer cabbage varieties do better w/ pruning those huge bottom eatin' leaves along the way. Puts more energy into head. Not tried it yet myself. Maybe?

I trimmed off bottom leaves last year, due to insect damage, and the cabbage put energy into building a stock. I think it's better to cover them with row fabric.
