He's probably our unanimous favourite cpop artist. We're doing a Guess the Lyric Challenge. Jay Chou is often known for not enunciating words clearly in his songs, and so today we're gonna try and use our mediocre Asian American Chinese Level to try and decipher what he's saying. Jay Chou's song must be really hard for you guys, cuz most of the lyrics are related to the Chinese history and classic literacy, and there are a lot of Chinese idioms and phrases from classical Chinese in it. And, he is also famous for not pronouncing the lyrics clearly. 😂

This is Max hard for you guys😂cos some of his lyrics aren't expressed in a daily oral way. It is in the Chinese poetic format (yes, this is a very strict format because Chinese is a tonal language and one syllable for one word) . Apart from Jay's accent, it's still hard even for a native speaker if he isn't proficient in“文言文”（Classical written Chinese, which is compulsory in high school and we can read ）

I'm native Chinese and I don't even bother figuring out what the lyrics mean when first listening to a song of Jay Chou. And I'm here to explain the title of Lantingshu. ( shu 序 Pinyin: xu means preface, so it literally means Lanting Preface) Lanting is the place where a famous ancient calligrapher and a bunch of his cousins and relatives got together on a spring day to enjoy the beautiful weather. They composed lots of poems and made a collection. This famous calligrapher decided to write the preface for this collection to give a short introduction on what this collection is all about. The preface was put a lot of thoughts into, which, other than the intro part, also contains some deep reflection on life. Besides the contents, the preface is a great calligraphy work as well. All these together makes it one of the masterpieces known and admired by every Chinese.

Love Jay Chou, my favorite songs are 青花瓷，爱在西元前，说好的幸福呢 and the legendary 七里香. Love alot of his older songs but damn guys you literally chose the songs that are the hardest to interpret to do this challenge!!! The level is exactly at shakespearian Chinese. Even me who has studied mandarin all my life might not be able to understand it. Literally any other Chinese love song is easier to listen and understand than Jay chou's songs which are written with the intention to be extremely deep and poetic so you guys made your own lives harder by choosing literally the hardest songs from Jay Chou's song list. Anyway love you guys keep it up 💜

omg I remember going back to China when I was 11 to learn Chinese and thought I was doing pretty well until my cousin played me 止战之伤 and was like, “you don’t really know Chinese until you can sing/understand Jay Chou” 11-year-old me died. 青花瓷 ( Blue and White Porcelain ), 兰亭序 ( Preface ) and 菊花台 ( Chrysanthemum ) are written in 文言文 which means Classical Chinese that the old chinese people like Qing Dynasty and before who were using them. Just like one of you said “ Shakespeare-esque Chinese “. Sometimes, a 5-7 words in a Classical Chinese sentence can be translated into a long meaning modern Chinese sentence. Even modern normal Chinese sometimes couldn’t fully understand them. Most importantly, those Classical Chinese lyrics are not written by Jay Chou. It’s from his most favorite and specific lyrics writer 方文山 and also one of his closest friends.

The Taiwanese accent when speaking mandarin is a bit softer than mainland China, so if you aren’t accustomed listening to that, it’s harder to understand. My mom likes to tell me all the time that she can’t understand what any Taiwanese singer that I listen to are saying. It’s easier for me because I watched A LOT of Taiwanese dramas before mainland

Jay Chou song's written by Fang Wen Shan. He was a high school Chinese language teacher in Taiwan. So some of the songs like Ju Hua Tai 菊花台 are written in classical Chinese-文言文. The feeling of this put into Western context is, Eminem try to rap Shakespeare literature
