I was really obsessed when it first came out, but even for someone having a native Chinese tongue like me, it’s still really really hard to rap like him, I had to slow down the play speed to like 0.7 to actually put all the words into the right beat and to start practicing! Something I didn’t expect is that I’ve been inspired a lot just by practicing this.
I’m a big fan of Jay Chou from 20years ago, and I’ve watched all the Jay Chou MV reactions on KZbin. Joe’s reaction on Jay’s MV is the highest quality and professionally. Really enjoy your video. Thanks Joe
I don't know why, but I started to tear up a bit watching how others appreciate Jay Chou's music. I am actually older than Jay Chou, but I have been a fan since 2001. I don't understand fully the technical aspects of the song, but thank you for your comments.

I have been a fan since his first album in 2000... and I was 30 then. Jay Chou has been my No.1 since and will continue to be... Irreplaceable! 💖
I was in 4th grade when this song was released, it was the first pop song I learned, and since then I've fallen in love with singing and with Jay Chou, thanks to Jay Chou's 20 years of companionship, it's great to have his music in the world!

Thanks Joe for your professional review. Enjoyed it and learned a lot too. This is a masterpiece of Jay Chao's creations. On 16 July 2003, more than 50 radio stations in Asia launched this song together and about 800M people listened to it at the same time, hence this day has since been set as Jay Chou's Day. Look forward to your next review on Jay's songs. Thanks again.
When this song came out I was like ten years old~ I still remember I grabbed the lyrics book and listened this album like all day long! #classic

The cool morning dew moisten the black robes There's mist on the flags. I know the only choice is to be cruel All these are for the way to the holy ground The thick fog has concealed my intention Who goes on the prowl and stops? By the time the victim cried, the bullet had taken his breath Each of us is guilty of the different sins we've committed I decide on who's right and who shall rest in peace The debate couldn't be ended in the endless night Shutting mouth of yours was the only grace Those who get in the way are sinful. There's no leeway for regret Judge in the name of God. There's no proper word for the feeling like smiling through my tears I gaze at the pure darkness. The sunshine tranquilly pierced through 灑向那群被我馴服後的 獸 and shed on the beasts that I've tamed 沈默的喊叫 沈默的喊叫 孤單開始發酵 There was silenct scream. There was silent scream. It kept on deriding me. The fire of recalls spread The frames had been innocent, but the cruel meekness emerged Time for frailty. Let's pray to God together God the father! I've lapsed into Babylon, where sins run wild Please forgive me for my pride Having none to pour out is so unbearable Behind the honor inscribes the loneliness Closing my eyes, again I see the frame in dreams of that year 天空是濛濛的霧 The sky was covered with fog My father led me by the hand. We walked in light steps on the peaceful and serene flags at dawn God the father! Really appreciate you did another song of Jay's. This is another song so many of us grew up with, and ingrained in our brains, but too young to grasp. But its also really interesting to hear your take about the overlapping double, i think sometimes there is triple voice overlay is pretty sums up the complex mind of a human/ "sinner". Using god father as theme, theres narration, overlapping prayer and the opera voice like the sound of the heart yearning for forgiveness. And really it is so interesting to hear the change of flow, but also so smooth like u said. Thx thx love ur reviews ❤

This is literally the first full album I’ve ever fully listened to in my life, in the room of an older friend during my early elementary school. I was 10ish. I can’t say at that time I got the full coolness and def not the meaning and emotions in this song, but I came to memorize almost every detail of it before even understanding it. As time goes and I feel more sophisticated, every time I go back I think, man that was a great song with so much going on. He was my hiphop and rhythm teacher without me knowing it. Thanks for your review. For that synth sound, I never really pointed that out, but it seems strongly recognizable whenever I think of the song, so I personally believe it is a twisted heart feeling the protagonist always has inside in his mafia life experience. No surprise that you think it weird, my dad always said to me this guys is too noisy and mumbling lol

Oboe. And it’s the best thing about this song. It’s the memory hook. For most songs, the memory point is the chorus. But when you think of this song, the oboe is the first thing pops to mind.

I feel equally jealous of and sad for people that discovers Jay Chou in the 2020s. This is the most musically gifted man alive. He’s constantly effing around and ended up with hundreds of classics. Just listen and learn. I have never met a producer in California that is even on par with Jay’s musical intelligence. That “synth” is not a synth but a tweaked Oboe. Roland has a similar sound. This song is arranged by a really talented musician. The Oboe line is the best thing of this song. After you listen to it every month for 19 years -I have- the Oboe line is the one thing that stands out.

I think he's really pretty genius. When I was in middle school I was obsessed with his songs. I bought his first album "Jay", and remembered every song in it. You mentioned his Chinese sounded fluid, and you are right. The way of rapping in Chinese is one of his greatest creation. He ingeniously noticed if people dropped the 4 tones in Chinese, Chinese rap would sound fluent. Before him, singers in Chinese tended to believe rap couldn't be localized into Chinese. Of course due to his unique way of singing (people could barely understand what he was singing), he got greatly bashed from music professionals in the first several years after his debut. Even today, after 20 years, I still love his songs, and I think he is almost the only one who really localized rap into Chinese. Unlike many of the so-called rappers today in China, Jay Chou never used so much English, either dressing like a "rapper", or mimic American rappers' rap, instead, he always rapped in his own way. If you're still interested, you can listen to his first album. B class compared to his albums afterwards, but very interesting.
I heard this song when I was in junior high school, then I watched the music video in an Internet café in high school, and then when I saw "The Godfather" when I was in college, I realized that this song must have been inspired by this movie.

Five bangs from a revolver at the end of the interlude (which sound contradictory to the beat and questionable at first) is perfected by the last bang at the second chorus. It is like firing out the last bullet to get the job done. The arrangement of Jay's earlier songs do have some irreplaceable creativity.

Most of the Chinese adults had criticized that his musics are rubbish, because he's one of those very first brought in hip hop elements into Chinese music and he's probably the most trending one at that time. My dad even asked me to turn the radio off when he listened to Jay Chou's music, they just couldn't accept the new music style. Hats off to the legendary of Chinese music, he must have received loads of negative comments for making changes but he still went through it. Respect indeed.
