I think it depends on the law of the land. American has a lot of laws that doesn't exist in other countries. Where I live, tenant are not protected from overstaying. The land owner "owns" everything sitting on the land. Technically including all the tenants belonging. Anyhow helping, in other ways of still a big positive for the homeless. A warm cooked meal, offer to do their laundry, etc.

Those that are "homeless" in s'pore are so not because they cannot afford to own a house. They have inherent problems. The problems lie in themselves. They have only themselves to blame.

Not every one grow up in a healthy environment or has a chance to understand what is healthy. Some watched the parents take drugs, sniff glue, neglected, no parenting, malnourished, fall through the cracks for some time before discovered that they needed help, some sick parents get the child to steal. So how? There are so many sad stories. Some is not that they don't want. They don't know

If you go against your family, how do expect to raise a child with values? How would your child view your life and learn from you? Asians are not caucasians, chasing their offspring from the home to fend for themselves. The family cohesion is strong in Asia yet, you chose to stray and complain when going gets tough. That is the reason of family, to be the support when the going gets tough. Maybe schools should teach family values, rather than useless subjects that they may never use in their adult life. And the religious organisations, completely non existent in the education of family values. Change needs to be effected.

No need to jump on Andy. He just made some realistic points. In an ideal world, everyone would help others regardless of race or religion. In reality however, there are some who are not comfortable with inviting a homeless stranger of another race or religion to share their home even temporarily.

Don't believe those Homeless folks in London asking for £15 to pay for Hostel for the night. Budget Hostel sold out Way in advance, No vacancy for same day booking. I stayed in between many Hostels for 4 months in early 2022, competition for Private Rentals are cutthroat, during Summer/ Wimbledon week with no booking on hand, I found myself Homeless for 8 nights straight.

Cost of shelter shouldn't be allowed to inflate so rapidly over a single year. It's sad to see common folk getting priced out of even basic necessities, while landlords and their agents profiteer from a free market that has run amok. For a developed country it's alarming that we have zero rent protection.

Yes, you may be right that the young couple were in over their heads. But give them a chance, they've been 'punished' enough for their mistake, living rough for that 3 months ain't easy at all. “Singaporeans do not want new citizens who do not want to live here but only want the power of the Singapore passport for their convenience and the safe and secure environment for their assets and wealth, ” Mr Singh added. He said Singapore does not want new citizens who are reluctant for their sons to do National Service and people who only want Singapore Citizenship as a stepping-stone to another country but, instead, seek those who have a long-term commitment to Singapore. When asked by Second Minister for Home Affairs Josephine Teo if Mr Singh was advocating that such a test should be applied before someone can be considered for permanent residency or citizenship. “I believe it would be helpful so I would advocate for it,” Mr Singh responded while citing the latest Singapore Census report once more.

I'm surprised to see that Singapore has a homeless problem. Being a small, wealthy and centrally planned island with an "authoritarian democracy" I thought they would have solved this problem. Perhaps, every society needs a permanent underclass to suppress rebellion from those only one step above.

Yes, Singapore does have some homeless people, but nothing on the scale of big cities in the US. Our government is also proactive in helping the homeless find temporary shelter, jobs and eventually rent/buy their own home, which isn’t the case in the US.

[Talking Point/My General POV about the homeless in Singapore.] I can see the point of opening a room in my house to the homeless. The homeless individual sees this as a point of gratitude and makes it a motivational asset to do whatever that individual to get back on his/her feet. But from my POV, I see 2 key problems. 1) There is a *social stigma* about the homeless. No matter which country you visit (in Europe [London, Paris, Berlin, etc.] , Asia [China, India, etc.], the Americas, Africas, anywhere in any country), the general stigma of homeless people (at least from, my social circles where I brought up the subject of homelessness, a majority from the elderly [the late 50s onwards] to some of my working-class friends) are either *they don't have a family to help them* or *refuse the help from such family members*, or they are *jobless* and they are *lazy*, *refusing to find a job* that allows them to find a place to sleep. 2) In my personal opinion, when I am letting a homeless person live in an empty room in my house for a few weeks, there is a certain *unknown factor* to such a unique individual like him/her. From my perspective, I am always worried about a few things when I let said homeless individual stay in my house: - Are they gonna do anything that might *implicate me as a homeowner?* (committing crimes of a nefarious nature like r***, m****r, dr**s, th**t, etc. ) - Will my family members (as mentioned in my first point, some of them are the elderly, drilled with *traditional mindsets* from their family members) accept this move, and cause *any problems* to these individuals (trash-talking, bullying, a***e, etc.), who is willing to stay in my house while they get back on their feet? In conclusion, I believe in my POV is this: Letting a homeless individual into my house to stay for a certain time period agreed upon *poses a certain level of risk* to me, my family members, and my sanity. And because of these points and the issues that I brought up earlier, controversially I would say that I am going to be one of the individuals that *will not open my door* to the homelessness. That said though, the issue of homelessness *needs to be brought up more often* in our dynamic modern environment like Singapore, and also in social debating circles. As the rate of inflation *increases proportionately* to the cost of living, the issue of homelessness needs to be brought up more often, especially in Parliament as a point of debate. Eventually, this problem cannot be ignored. *I'm looking at you, America.* If you have a different opinion, you are welcome to educate me on the subject. Thank you for reading this.
